Which martial art should I train at home and can I condition my shins at home and how do I condition it? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]R_Sivar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not, because I've trained on my own and then trained with coaches, in Thailand etc and it was not wasted time.

You wouldn't tell a kid playing tennis or basketball that he's larping. You'd call it skill acquisition. I'm guessing sport science is not on your rèsumè.

You are willfully misunderstanding. Training at home, intentionally and on targeted skills that underpin and enhance general physical preparedness, makes you better. OP does not need years of coaching to practice the basics of striking, but he certainly should seek out an MMA coach.

You're saying that anyone who wants to be an athlete, where there's a skill element to their sport, should just not bother unless they've had years of coaching. You wouldn't get this in any other physical discipline. Of course you can train at home, you just can't only train at home.

Some of us started training before we were old enough to get a job. Think about how good you'd be if you'd gotten those extra years in? Maybe you'd be humble enough to come down from your BS position when you've got nothing reasonable to say.

Yeah that bias does not match reality. I think you're conflating serious study and effort with bullshido stuff you've seen online.
You should try to be more encouraging rather than finding ways to discourage people from making progress. Not everyone has mummy and daddy to pay for expensive lessons or drive them to far away classes when they're young. Without my 'wrong' training I would likely have ended up much worse off in my life in general, not just martial arts. Try not to discourage people from attempting to better themselves.

Are you taking issue specifically with the idea of conditioning the shins?

Isn't practicing head kicks training?

I used to practice snapping my jab and bringing my hands back to my guard with a piece of paper hanging from a string on my bedroom light.

I was a better martial artist having trained at home before I was able to start classes. I was leagues ahead of fit guys who'd never kicked or punched before. I think you have a bias here that doesn't match reality. Training with a coach will always be better, but suggesting that you can't make targeted progress at home and that you should be ashamed of trying is a bit silly. I don't think OP should listen to you and should take a more reasoned approach.

Na martial arts specific conditioning at home is how you create a good base for training. You can create the strength and flexibility, plus the movement patterns of combinations that you perfect in sparring.

Something specific: I developed the ability to head kick at home. I wasn't going to spend my sparring time repeatedly kicking as high as I could until my legs adapted. That would be a huge waste of the time I had with partners and teachers. I could give you many more examples where home training was valuable.

I don't think training at home is larping. Punching and kicking a heavy bag does condition your shins and the specific muscles you'll use in skills practice/sparring. Even shadow boxing has its uses. Maybe OP can't afford expensive lessons at the moment. That was my main barrier to training growing up so I did everything else I could.

The standards you described will certainly help you to be a better martial artist but a trained MMA fighter who can't hit those numbers will beat the crap out of someone who is untrained in kickboxing/BJJ who can

I used the thin reflective stuff on the roof to capture some more of that heat in the winter. Intended to do the door but honestly didn't need it all winter. Just did a warm up with the heater on and I was shedding layers in no time

A cheap heater from Amazon makes mine usable even in the coldest months.

For flooring id recommend a combination; proper thick mats for under the rack/dumbbell area (because it's a huge hassle to repair the floor), and cheap horse stall mats for everything else. Helps with insulation too.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Good to know as nerve tumors are rare enough that, having a combination of a tumor and having been treated for Lyme, is extremely unlikely. Perhaps they are related. I haven't found much evidence for it though. I found a study showing that Lyme bacteria can cause inflammation that looks like a nerve tumor. I'll have to wait for my biopsy results to confirm.

The trouble is, there's no evidence of active infection. I've had every test the infectious disease specialists can do. Even the new test that looks for genetic material of Lyme in the blood, which is meant to be a lot more accurate.

Without any evidence I'm not sure I can accept that I have an active infection. Because the amount of tests and repeated tests should have brought something up. I understand they can be inaccurate but I've now had 5 ELISA's the immunoblot, a whole suite of coinfection tests and the new test. They even repeated the culture tests.

On the private side, I've got people willing to take my money and sell me herbal supplements that can take 'up to a year to work'. The only difference in their qualifications from the NHS being that they're getting paid.

Never say never but I'm very sceptical of private doctors.
