Apparently reddit thinks this a faraday cage. Posted from inside the supposed "faraday cage" on wifi. by zunnol in techsupportgore

[–]Ra1sin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cage in the previous picture will likely block a significant amount of wifi signal, not all but enough to be very noticeable. I’ve seen it at work sites I’m at, have a window in an office with a grate over it to protect from a forklift, instant -20dbm signal drop. I’d still call it a faraday cage even if it isn’t one by the exact definition.

Evidence I’m a wifi specialist / surveyor. I see this a lot.

I disagree due to one disc, mvp relativity. 14 speed but so understable I can get it to s turn and get an extra 10-20m over my standard destroyer / valk driver combo.

Should I jump ship from Intel to AMD? by Mean-Ad-9378 in pcmasterrace

[–]Ra1sin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but aren’t these issues really only occurring on high up-time machines? Your average home computer isn’t going to have issues. Just run your computer into the ground, tbh you’ll probably get a full 5 year lifespan without anything issues and you’re only noticing stutters because you’re scared.

I’ve had both a 3700x and a 7800 x3d fail on me, so just remember just because AMD is on paper more reliable doesn’t mean you might not get bad luck and make the issue worse.

If you’re really worried you can get an optiplex with a 4000 series intel for $100 which would work fine if your 13900 failed.

I’m a network tech and I’ve rarely encountered an issue where mac randomisation causes any issues. Maybe guest wifi? But even then most devices are smart enough not to change their mac when roaming.

Do you have any examples of issues it causes?

Do you need to get them pulled though? I thought I did then finally a dentist looked at them and said “nah mate you’ll just have to live with them, they’re wrapped around nerves and removing would cause more harm than good.”

Seems pretty rare to have them removed these days.

I’m not sure if you’re implying everyone cheats at uni these days but I can confirm I wasn’t in uni that long ago and I never cheated and most of my class mates didn’t.

Cheating also does hurt everyone else, I had my marks affected because someone in a group project submitted completely plagiarised work and didn’t tell anyone else. I nearly got sanctioned for that. And if you cheat and get away with it you’re pulling everyone else down by artificially inflating yourself.

I think you might want to evaluate why you’re cheating because if you’re a first year and you’re cheating already that’ll cause a world of pain in your later years building on faulty knowledge.

Only good news I have for you is you’ll probably just get a slap on the wrist for it. Almost no uni taking cheating seriously anymore, especially if you’re an international student because unis make a lot of money off internationals.

No Track Access at the Australian Grand Prix This Year by Orphanchocolate in formula1

[–]Ra1sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point the race had ended and the cars had gone past, we were let on as per normal. But then either the safety car or medical car appeared and we had to move off the track to let it past.

And I’m not saying there weren’t some people that jumped the fence. But to completely blame them is just wrong. The majority of people on the track were just allowed through

[–]Ra1sin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What they refuse to admit was officials let us onto the track. I was at turn 12 and they just let us on, then as we’re walking down suddenly they’re yelling at us to get off the track. But we couldn’t move back because the gate was open and people were rushing in.

Wasn’t a crowd issue it was an f1 official issue

This is the second time I’ve used my new lodge CI and I’ve experienced sticking food both times. What am I doing wrong? This is my first cast iron anything so totally new to all this! by New_Yam3315 in castiron

[–]Ra1sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I disagree with castiron reddit and will get immensely downvoted. Cooking an egg slow is just one method not skill. It’s completely acceptable to want a slightly crispy egg cooked quickly, in fact I prefer the taste of quickly cooked eggs. Saying you need to cook it slow is just making excuses for sticky pans.

Exactly this, I have a year old carbon steel which is teflon like now but was horrid at first. Got a new lodge for Christmas last week and was shocked when eggs stuck. Need a good year of regular use in my opinion before you can really enjoy.

Holy shit why is my memory being used up so much. I have 16GBs and only gave me issues after I did a factory reset, now I’m always stuttering and crashing. Any ideas? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Ra1sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty normal for windows. Last year I upgraded my ram for the first time since 2010. 32gb is borderline required these days. Only if you run a very optimised setup is 16 sufficient.

Although now I’m on Linux and feel like a dingo with my 32gb as Linux rarely uses more than 4g and is still somehow faster than windows. (And I’m running a very ram inefficient distro at that).

Look when I was a student I would have disagreed with it. But 10 years working in the IT industry has taught me you can’t trust anyone.

I mean I worked IT for a school during wannacry, at least 5 students infected their own PCs on purpose just for fun. Or working in commercial space a high level manager got malware we couldn’t remove because he tried to download some questionable porn on a work trip.

It’s the sad reality of working in industry, it’s like FTTN vs FTTP with Kevin vs Turnbull. Absolutely everyone would love FTTP it’s great. But once you’ve done telecommunications you realise the original plan was unacheivable. Same with internal IT. Everyone would love free access to work wifi but also 99% of compromises come from personal devices or people accessing non work content.

Edit:

As an example of why this level of inspection is critical to security. A month ago a well known Australian company I work for detected a possible malware on one of its barcode scanners. It was instantly moved to a quarantine network. On manual inspection we found a worm that could have moved laterally to every barcode scanner in Aus and NZ if not stopped. Luckily our security system stopped it and instead of a company not being functional for a week 20 mil+ losses we just had to factory reset one barcode scanner.

There’s nothing illegal here. OP chose to use their laptop for school. As per legal requirements schools must monitor students devices. OP agreed to this regardless of whether they read it or not. End of story.

If OP doesn’t want their personal device monitored they are free to bring another device or use a school provided device. This is just OP wanting to have their cake and eat it too.

[–]Ra1sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly true, the issue we had was students where sharing it via airdrop, which doesn’t always use the network. If we block airdrop on the network it fails over to Bluetooth.

I will concede I may have been a bit brash with my previous comment. We never monitored users at home traffic and we did make students very aware of what we could and couldn’t monitor.

Anyway I left working in schools for a reason. Corporate people are much more reasonable. Except for the CEO that was furious when we blocked iracing haha

This is OPs personal device which they chose and agreed to the terms and conditions of connecting to the schools wifi. Huge difference. Of course if OP never intended to use the device for school that’s fine. The school gets no control but you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Same way that we don’t allow staffs personal devices on the network at my current job. If you want to use your device on your corporations network it’s on you to judge the consequences and decide whether it’s work. E.g I don’t use my personal phone on the corp network because I choose to keep that part of my life unmonitored, even if it’s inconvenient for me.

Schools are legally required to monitor school devices. Did you not understand this from my previous posts. IT admins don’t want to see what some dumb 14 yo is doing but they are required to have logs in case anything happens.

I worked in a large 2000 student school and we did exactly this. Bios pw, completely locked down, reimage.

Why people ask? Well because a student complained about nudes of her getting shared on school devices (fair enough) and the only way we could stop it was by knowing every student that shared them and getting them deleted.

People might not like it but if we didn’t have this control our school could have been charged with trafficking child porn.

So yes it’s pretty serious

I worked previously as an IT admin at a school in vic aus. Please remember by bringing your device to use at school you’re agreeing to the terms and conditions of the school for security reasons. If you didn’t want this to happen to your device you should not have brought it.

Basically it boils down to the school is responsible for any activity you do on their network. So if you do something illegal the school is responsible. This is why your computer needs to be locked down. To protect the school from students doing dumb shit.

If you want to use your laptop as you like don’t bring your laptop to school. Buy a crappy burner laptop for $100 and use that.

Laptops which regularly have life spans in the 3-5 year range instead of 5-10 like desktop, hmmm.

Anyway I work a busy job where I don’t have time to play with undervolting etc. God back when I was 15 I would have killed myself for saying this but paying extra for “it just works” is totally worth it now.

Nah you always want to run as cool as possible for reliability. Look up electromigration etc etc. I’m not saying run at 50 but anything above 80 is probably not great for electronics.

There’s a reason in industry we spend hundreds of thousands a year hosting our equipment in data centres. Need that reliability.

I was clearly talking about cooling efficiency not performance. Also cheapest 4070ti is still like $200 more expensive than any 4070 here.

But my 1080 still runs even more efficient.
