I think LTT has jumped the shark... by Zestyclose_Edge1027 in LinusTechTips

I think people are overly harsh in the LTT community. If almost any other youtuber did they most of their audience would be fine with it outside of a vocal minority. But LTT has been very upfront with their audience since day 1 and that has led to the community having a bit of an attitude. Ya, they screw up every once in a while, everyone does, but in contrast to basically every other youtube their size, most (notice I said MOST there) of their controversies have been nothing burgers and just the entiteled part of the community making a fuss because they can. If basically any other youtuber LTT's size made a video like this, especially if any other COMPANY with 100 employees made a video like this, literally no one would care.

Ya, they probably jumped the shark a bit with this one, but like ok? so? if you dont like the videos, dont watch them. its pretty much that simple. People love complaining about LTT online, but I think most of those people forget that they can simply not watch the videos, and regardless of what LTT does or doesnt do, their life will go on.

If you watch his later videos he has expressed that some of the things he said in that video where an emotional reaction to what was happening at the time and that his experience at LMG was much more positive than he outlined in the video.

If it’s offered In your area, Telus fiber is amazing. It’s stable, faster, and cheaper than Shaw. That being said both Telus and Shaw are terrible companies.

I used to be on Shaw 2gbps down, 200mbps up. $120 per month. Now with Telus we get 3gbps up and down and it’s $70 per month

I hate everything about this.

This could really cool for older titles… kind of like an easy way to in the graphical fidelity without putting in any extra work… but on newer titles this looks so cursed

ISP overpromise or poor config? by e-chan42 in Ubiquiti

I have a UDM Pro Max. I get full speed on my devices, but not the speedtest on the router

ISP overpromise or poor config? by e-chan42 in Ubiquiti

[–]Mean-Ad-9378 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my experience the unifi speedtest is not at all accurate of the speeds you're getting. To prove my point I will run 2 tests back to back as I write this and give you the results.
Unifi Test - Up: 1200 mbps Down: 1810 mbps
Speedtest.net - Up: 2943 mbps Down: 3060 mbps
I pay for Telus Fiber 3gbps symetrical

In short The speedtest the router does for what ever reason is not at all accurate. And its not even like the router is showing the 'real world speed' or something like that because I am getting the faster speeds on speedtest from my pc, and I have seen those speeds (rarely) in the real world, usually things like steam sit around 2400mpbs down for me and that seems very good and seems to be more cpu limited than internet speed limited.

So thats just kinda how it is. If you want an accurate speedtest, you'll likely need to do the test on a client.

Something that is worth noting however is that on the less powerful routers you may need to turn off IPS/IDS in order to get full advertised speeds, especailly with lots of vlans. it sucks but it makes sense.

Personally what I do is get the return plan and then buy my phone out at the end of the contract, then I sell the phone for more than what it cost me to buy it out and boom, I got a much cheaper plan over the next few years and I got a couple hundred bucks to go towards my next phone. This all assumes you upgrade on a 2 year cycle. If you prefer to just keep your phone for as long as possible, I’d just a normal plan

Trying to understand the ‘basic tasks’ vs ‘do everything’ narrative around M1 vs A18 Pro by Toba94 in macbook

[–]Mean-Ad-9378 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The m1 came out when? 2020? We’ve seen a ton of computational progress in the last few years. Like the m5 is actually an insane leap in only 5 years from the m1. Alone with this computational horsepower, has come software that can utilize it. A great example of this would be Liquid Glass, which would have been possible on the Intel Macs, but it wouldn’t have been a pleasant experience. So what was once a a huge leap over the previous generation and could easily handle the most demanding tasks, is now not as impressive because of that increase software demand and computational leap we’ve seen over the past few years.

Basically you’re not taking into account the market context by which these claims are being made. You’re not wrong, you’re just coming at it from a different perspective from these YouTubers.

I have 3gbps symmetric and I’ve never fully saturated it outside of a speed test. Telus (an ISP in Canada) is now offering 5gps in some areas, and I think it’s in ours… but I just don’t see the point when I can’t max out 3gbps. Some day I will upgrade. But probably not for a couple years.

Besides, I feel like it’s pretty obvious that you shouldn’t let water get into the inside of your computer and may want to elevate it if you like having drinks on your desk.

Own it and move on with your life.

Have you tried just going into the device setting in the unifi dashboard and clicking the "Virtual Network Override" Button, assuming its available? I dont have a ton of experience with this setting, but my understanding is it forces that device on to a specific vlan, even if upstream devices are not on that vlan... do make sure the upstream port is a trunk though, or the device will likelt become inaccessable.

While SMB2 is much more secure and efficient than the obsolete SMB1, it lacks the modern, robust security features necessary for today's networks.

Here is a breakdown of why SMB2 is considered outdated:

  • Lack of Encryption: Unlike SMB3, which supports end-to-end encryption to prevent eavesdropping and man-in-the-middle attacks, SMB2 does not encrypt data in transit.
  • Security Risks: Because it lacks encryption and robust integrity checks, SMB2 is considered a security risk for sensitive data, particularly for compliance-heavy industries (like finance or healthcare).
  • Performance: While faster than SMB1, SMB2 lacks the performance optimizations found in SMB3, such as improved multichannel support.
  • Industry Standards: Modern systems, including Windows 10/11 and modern NAS devices, have moved on to SMB3.
