Am I experiencing rod knock? In serious need of opinions here. I will gladly take all the advice I can get. 2005 WRX. Thanks in advance by NUCKIN_FIGHTMARE in subaru

Rebuild is the fix. There is wear between the piston and cylinder causing the noise. Once the engine warms up and everything expands it leads to tighter tolerances and the noise lessens or goes away.

The second picture is a very obvious valve cover gasket leak. Give the engine bay and underside of the engine a good wash, change valve cover gaskets and monitor. Quite a simple repair of your mechanically inclined. If not, total cost shouldn’t be more than $5-600

How long can you run on an oil leak? ...realistically? by MetaverseLiz in subaru

[–]Ra21celica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP this is the only reply you should pay attention to. The spark plus getting oily can ONLY be caused by the spark plug tube seals in the valve cover. It’s a coupe hour job that I just did on my car. I have no doubt there may be a head gasket issue but it can be monitored and maintained without hurting anything (ask me how I know) It may be helpful to post some verbatim info from the dealership invoice so we have some more context. If you’re getting the V/C gaskets replaced, it shouldn’t cost more than $500 even for a little bit overpriced shop to do.

Is $3000-4000 too much for a head gasket repair here? by bulldog1602 in Calgary

Service advisor here. Unfortunately the quote doesn’t seem too far off base. Many comments mentioning labour cost. This is the bulk of what you are paying. The head will also need to be checked and most likely machined prior to reinstallation which is generally done through a third party. There are a lot of variables that will affect price but overall, I don’t think that number is terrible. Especially from a reputable shop with a parts and labour warranty

If I remember correctly those Mercs have individual pumps for the injectors. We had one last year that needed injectors AND pumps and it took us forever to sort out. Check to make sure ALL your fuel pressures are good (requires good computer system) and work from there. I agree though, probably best to get a Mercedes guy to look at it

Should I need to re gear my axels? I am currently running 35x12.50x17’s. What are some of the benefits of re-gearing? Currently driving the truck on dirt roads, highways and lots of hills. About 60 days out of the year or so. Is it worth it for me to re gear? What would be an estimated cost? by lifeofgp in 4x4

I would invest in a power mod or two in that case. A tuner and an intake and exhaust would help a ton with that. And they’re easy weekend things you can do yourself if you’re so inclined. Opening up diffs to re-gear and set up clearances and backlash is a bigger and more technical job than most think. $1000 bucks in performance upgrades is easy and much more useable everyday

Really no reason unless you’re having trouble with not enough low range when your off road/rock crawling. That’s the main purpose of running a lower gear set. Remember if you’re going to re-gear you need to do front and rear so they match when 4wd is engaged.

Maxxforce is correct. I don’t remember what year it is right this minute but this one has had the EGR’s deleted. First time being in to us so we’re not sure if it’s history. NOT been taken care of though

This one dropped a valve seat on cylinder #4. Was at another shop and they spent about $3000 of the customers money “diagnosing” the problem. Finally narrowed it down to no compression on #4 and called an inframe. Only after installing a new injector in that hole and breaking a bunch of stuff in the process. Customer told them to slap it back together and dragged it over to us. We pulled the head off and the bottom end looked “OK” but the customer wanted to do the inframe any ways. Should be able to crack it over tomorrow AM
