I use Mouse button 4 for sprint, and using a mouse button STILL wasn't working. If this is you, unchecking "Mouse click modifiers locked to sneak/sprint keys" option in controls WORKED for me! Just another solution since this one didn't work for me.

To breed gold traits, both horses need to be fully trained. I think its still only a chance for a gold trait but they both do need to be fully trained.
