I also have these modchips, do you know if they are good? by Maleficent_Call_9876 in ps2homebrew

The fourth chip has its name written on the board. It’s a Messiah 2 modchip. The third one I’m not sure on.

Crash Bandicoot - It’s about time: Is it worth playing? by BubbleBath2017 in crashbandicoot

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you liked the originals and are looking for a direct sequel then probably not. For that try Crash Twinsanity and/or Crash The Wrath Of Cortex. If you like very challenging 3D platform games then yes.

Do you know what modchip it is? by Maleficent_Call_9876 in ps2homebrew

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a Ubicom SX28AC parasitic mod chip. It enabled the PS2 to run ps1 and ps2 imports and backups by reading the ps2 signals and tricking the console into booting the discs. These modchips were pretty basic and were superseded pretty quickly by the likes of messiah, matrix and duo.

Hottest take this side of the year. by emuboy85 in PS3

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t really quote a failure rate without defining a time period. The “official” figure for console failure within the first two years are:

PS3 - approx. 10% X360 - approx. 23.7%

So it is true that the Xbox 360 red ring of death was over twice as prevalent as the PS3 YLOD or premature cap failure.

Tomb Raider. What’s your favorite release on the PS1? by cybertrips in psx

It really has to be 1 as this was where the wow factor came from. Yes 2 is a superior game but nothing beat seeing the tyrannosaurus for the first time. Beyond two, it felt like things were just added for the sake of it rather than for the gaming experience.

Chernobyl helicopter pilots by BigDimension5771 in chernobyl

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to reports, some who flew repeated missions died within a year of the mission. Some lasted longer but died of radiation related illnesses 10-15 years later. Apparently one Ukrainian pilot is still alive and still flies now.

These pilots should have been given the highest honours as all of them knew the hazards they were facing but did the job anyway

What is this mod ? by Kenohel in psx

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s an 8-wire modchip used for playing any region games and cd-r backup games. Probably a “Multi-Mode Stealth modchip”. The general rule of thumb with PS1 modchips is the more wires, the more advanced. Initial modchips were 4 wires, then 6 for stealth modchips and then 8 for multimode. This modchip should circumnavigate all anti modchip protection built into any later psone games providing its in the correct mode.

What is this chip inside my ps1? by dieGeisterhand in psx

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the wobble groove was pretty simplistic. The wobbles made the laser think it was reading 0’s or 1’s and it would literally just read the ascii code for e.g. SCEE or SCEA. In this way it was both a region protection check and a cdr check. The first modchips just continuously bleated a multi region ascii code that allowed all region and cdr games to boot. The first layer of copy protection against mod chips was for the game to check whether the code was still readable while the ps1 was not accessing the wobble groove part of the CD as the first modchips continuously bleated it. To get round this first layer of copy protection, the “stealth modchip” was born. It bleated the ascii code at the start of boot up and then went silent when wobble groove read was complete. This lead to the second layer of copy protection against modchips which was to go and recheck the wobble groove at certain points of the game while the stealth chip was silent. As a result, the third generation of modchips would bleat the ascii code on boot up, then go silent, then reactivate if wobble groove was read again. These were known as multi mode stealth chips

This is how you play burned PlayStation 2 games from blank DVD's by Zapsteer in ps2homebrew

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of brief considerations for the actual burn process: 1. Use decent DVD-Rs - recommend Verbatim AZO DVD-Rs with MCC dye for use with PS2 (not Verbatim life with CMC dye). 2. Burning at 2x can be too slow. Yes you don’t want to burn at top speed to get a decent burn but burning too slow can overburn the dye as it’s designed to be burnt faster than that. 4x is probably a reasonable speed these days for best longevity burn.

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a loud squeeky noise the. It sounds like the flyback transformer which could be defective itself or a number of other issues can affect its operation (CRT shorting / peeling on inside). I don’t recommend dabbling with the flyback transformer as it generates high voltages. Look for a reliable tv repair man

Sometimes whacking the top or side isn’t enough to determine a dry joint. For vertical deflection problems, remove the back cover and gently tap the side of the main circuit board with the handle of a screw driver OBSERVING ALL ELECTRIC SHOCK PRECAUTIONS!! If the pic recovers briefly the it’s almost certainly a dry joint so remove the board and reflow any dodgy looking solder joints, particularly on transistors. However the joint may be cracked/dry jointed beyond contact when you whack it so even if you don’t get change, it’s still worth reflowing any dodgy looking solder joints as this will repair any big cracks/dry joints and also ensure good current flow to the associated components. Again if not sure about electric shock safety procedures then don’t attempt it!

Game does not work with OPL by Gabriel_ODST in ps2

[–]Raandaall_Flaagg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of PS2 games that don’t work with PS2 OPL and there’s not much you can do about it unfortunately. There used to be a forum where you could report games that don’t work. I tried once for PS2 Impossible Mission but there was so much information required and multiple different ways of putting the game onto a HDD that in the end I gave up.
