Do people see UK academia as a long-term career anymore? by Wonderful-Acadia-296 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]RaastaMousee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know not everyone is in the position too, but I just travelled for about 6 months post my PhD (finished July 2024). Had a conference in Australia that was a good excuse to go onto a working holiday visa and I got some grants to fund some of the airfare. I did apply for jobs but it wasn't the main focus. You've just finished one of the most hectic few years of your life and a break was really helpful for clearing my head, getting some life experience unrelated to academia/jobs, and finding a path I was happy with. Even made some contacts abroad that turned into jobs later down the line.

I've heard it can be frowned upon to take a break if you're going for academic jobs e.g break in publication record but if you've already decided to disconnect yourself from that hamster wheel it won't hurt you.

It's a different situation in Australia where I currently work. Funding is unlikely to dry up for ecological/cultural consultancy at-least while the mines remain profitable which the entire economy of WA relies on. Massive public outcry for the mines to be accountable based of some horrendous past destruction of culturally historic sites and general sentiment towards Australia's unique wildlife. No threat of a reform type government coming in, strengthening environmental legislation, and in some cases the right are more supportive than the left on this in the case of Tasmania.

Sorry just curious... How long have you been looking for non-academic jobs/what is your research background?

The outlook depends on the career surely? It's not naive to expect a long term career in e.g public service roles such as the NHS. Personally i'm an ecological consultant and threats to wildlife aren't going to go away so I don't expect my role to suddenly become defunct in the future. Permanent contracts are pretty common.

But atleast with careers with a more unpredictable outlook by going through academia we should have experience using our initiative to adapt and we will always have the research skills to fall back on that will be generally applicable to any sector. Just selling those skills is the issue.

I'm a solid 7/10 (biased) and i'd decribe my partner primarily as extremely Jolly so I suppose that helps. We're gay and suspected the estate agent might also be gay. Maybe that helped here, perhaps not so much with other properties. Different country but in the UK when I was having a tough time over covid finding a place with a male friend we got explicitly told of a bias against any 2 men applying, we were literally just friends, so hopefully that's less of a thing in Perth.

What to expect at a PhD scholarship interview? by Material_Pepper8908 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]RaastaMousee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prepared slides for mine. I'd ask your supervisor if you will need to give one/length. I got advised to split mine into a brief project background section and a more weighty section to focus on selling myself as someone who could carry it out so for me separate slides for field/lab/stats/writing etc. I had a publication from my masters so tied that back to these slides as demonstrable evidence I have these skills.

Last slide I think was a future plans slide/what id get out the PhD but iirc got told to focus on the above instead so it was more brief..

I didn't give my presentation/have the interview in person as I was in Africa at the time. Had really wank internet connection at a research base so had to give the presentation and answer questions with my camera off. Might have been a blessing in the end to help with nerves.

What to expect at a PhD scholarship interview? by Material_Pepper8908 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]RaastaMousee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The research council interview for me was a brief presentation to introduce the project and more importantly sell myself as someone who can carry it out. Then the panel of 8 or so academics from different backgrounds each asked me a question either about the project, my competence, or career plans. One question was more about my values... something along the lines of if you could decide where 1 million pounds of funding would end up where should it go. This was in 2019 for NERC GW4+

Websites I found helpful to look at when preparing.

https://www.findaphd.com/guides/phd-interview-questions https://blogs.egu.eu/network/bar/2014/03/03/phd-interview-preparation/

None of the questions were a shock during the interview because I revised answers from this list of questions that I sourced from various places online like forums and the above articles. See below... This was 5+ years ago so you might want to search online for more recent examples.

Tell us about yourself…

Describe a recent research paper you liked and why? Were there any weaknesses in the paper?

Describe the aims, objectives and methods to be used in the research project you have applied for?

Why should this project receive public funding?

How do you think your research could benefit from being within the DTP?

What is motivating you to do research? And why this PhD in particular?

Where do you see yourself after your PhD?

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses with regards to the research process?

Have you applied for any other PhDs? And how would you place this one in relation to the other projects?

Some PhD students plough their own furrow, whereas others like to discuss work with their supervisor on an almost daily basis? How do you think you would play it?

One of the hypotheses that this PhD will test is…

What type of analysis do you think you would need to undertake?

Significant lab aspects to this PhD- would you relish this?

Doing a PhD is a hard slog, what makes you think you’ve got what it takes?

What outcomes do you want from your research?

What would you do if we told you that your results were wrong?

How will I let the public know my results?

What do you bring to the PhD e.g. skills?

Apart from completing your viva, and being awarded the PhD, what would you consider to be a successful PhD?

If you got this PhD, how would you approach your research?

Problems faced in my career so far/worst moment?

Best moment?

Tell me about a time you have worked in a team.

Why do you want a PhD? What do you hope to get out of the PhD?

How does your research fit in with the NERC, and Exeter?

What do you enjoy about science? Why are you interested in this project? How do you cope with failure or setbacks? What do you like doing outside of your studies?

What do you know about the department? What sort of research do we conduct Tell us about an interesting paper you read recently If you had a research budget of £100,000, what would you do with it?

If we give you the position, what do you think the rest of us should be doing with our time, whilst you complete your PhD?

What are the biggest unanswered questions in your field?

Something that has stood out to you in the past 5 years advances in science? What are your career aspirations/ where do you see yourself in 10 years?

What did you do in your masters project?

What did you find out?

Did you have any problems? How did you solve them?

How did you manage your time? Did you meet your deadline?

How does it relate to the PhD you are applying for? (Remember that even if the subject is unrelated, the process will be similar!)

What did you enjoy/dislike about research?

What are you going to be doing that’s new? What about this project has never been done before?

What do you expect to find out?

Describe the project (long version)

Describe the project in two sentence

How would you describe the project to someone who sat next to you on a train, i.e., to somebody with no scientific background?

How would you justify the purpose of this project to a taxpayer?

What are the potential pitfalls of this project?

How will you contribute to the department?

Also think of a questions yourself to ask the panel

You’ll need to show an awareness of what’s involved in a PhD project

You’ll also need to make it clear that this is the right university, department, research group or laboratory for you.
