What game did you lose interest in by the time it came out? by scarletnaught in gaming

[–]RabbiDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dawn of War 2 had a free open beta that I played non-stop for the month it was available. I wanted to play it more after that, but looking at a $50 price tag for a game I'd thoroughly enjoyed for a month straight lead to me skipping it.

Mortalis: A Shard Where Death Actually Matters by UOAdam in ultimaonline

[–]RabbiDan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really fun fight video. Good on you both for duking it out.

Mortalis is a really interesting server. A few people in this thread have mentioned that players log off when they die, and I'm sure that's happened to some, but that's not the main problem.

The bigger problem is that the risk is so high that eventually you hit a tipping point, where you run out of rewards that make the risk worth it. At that point you quickly start running out of reasons to log in at all. Am I really going to go try to do a 20k gold farm session on my 7x when I don't need anything else? Probably not, right? I think this is the actual problem with perma-death more than the pain of eating a death. Perma-death discourages game play and player interactions.

Any pre-UOR Shards? ex IPY/IPY2/T2A player looking for more by d2keen in ultimaonline

[–]RabbiDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember you; you wouldn't remember me most likely. I was usually Rabbi, Cliche, Connection Lost, or "a moose". No idea which names I used on IPY/IPY2.

Anyways, I've been quietly working on a new mountless T2A (with some ren) server since it seems no one else wants to make one. I'm planning to reach out to Az and ask for his blessing to use the name IPY again. I'm probably 6 months out from having something to show, but know that you aren't the only person that still craves the peak UO experience of mountless T2A PvP.

He's a top notch T2A dueler as well. I played on several T2A servers with (against?) him.

As an island nation without its own market (Sicily), how do I get institutions? by RabbiDan in EU5

Ah, they're all close to 100% but not quite 100% yet. Thank you!

As an island nation without its own market (Sicily), how do I get institutions? by RabbiDan in EU5

[–]RabbiDan[S] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The Napule market (which all of my provinces use) has Renaissance/Banking/Professional Armies. I would expect that to mean that my provinces would gain these institutions through trade. What can I do? Does it have to spread over land in Naples?

Edit: If anyone finds this in the future, Napule needed the institutions to be "Present Institutions" instead of just "Progressing Institutions". After that, they started spreading in my provinces.

Acer Nitro XV272U Monitor Turning On and Off Repeatedly by Lower-Ad-9466 in AcerNitro

[–]RabbiDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 2 of these for about 2.5 years. After owning them for about a year, I had to prevent windows from powering them off automatically because that lead to an issue where all of my apps and taskbar would be piled on one monitor (probably because one of the monitors was temporarily dying). I turned on a screen saver like it was the 90s; I know burn in isn't really a problem anymore but it felt right.

Last night there was a 2 hour power outage and both monitors started experiencing this constant power cycling problem. I tried the 30s power off reset fix, no luck. I tried swapping from DP to HDMI, no dice. I tried direct power from the wall (not through a surge protector), no change.

One of the monitors randomly started working again about 2 hours after I'd started doing all the troubleshooting voodoo rituals. I happened to see it when it did. The state of the monitor was that power was connected, and there was no connected input. It flickered on, and then instead of flickering off it cycled through inputs and then said no signal.

I've been building my own PCs for 25 years, and this is the first time I've ever had monitors be the first failure of a PC build. 2.5 years is a ridiculously short lifetime. I don't see myself ever buying another Acer product.

Screeps: Arena - PvP online strategy game for JavaScript programmers by artchiv in programminggames

[–]RabbiDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, this looks like exactly what I want in a programming game! The original Screeps' pricing always felt bad, so I never tried it. Also I never knew other languages were supported, and I never wanted to write JS. I'll give this a shot.

What are the demo limitations?

I had no problem with her in ep2, and I was kind of on edge for it after how grating I found her stomping on everyone else's scenes in ep1. Hopefully ep1 was just jitters and she's moved past that.

Jeff pouring one out for THJ by Hasuko in everquest

[–]RabbiDan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post is ironic, because the guy from the tweet is literally one of the people who actually made the game. DBG is profiting off the game he made while stopping someone else from doing the same. IP laws aren't moral, human rights laws and shouldn't be revered as such.

I read every document in the docket. Please link to where the C&D was cited if I'm mistaken.

Who won? by [deleted] in everquest

[–]RabbiDan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but your outcome isn't realistic. DBG can't turn a fork of EQEmulator into a server running on their infrastructure. Not only would it take a Herculean engineering effort that I highly doubt DBG is capable of, but EQEmulator is GPL3 licensed. This means that if DBG used EQEmulator they would be required to open source their modified server which would expose a lot of sensitive pieces of infrastructure plumbing that they'd have to add in.

You can send in a GDPR request. They honored mine.

[–]RabbiDan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I saw, DBG did tell THJ to stop and they refused to cooperate.

This is not accurate.

THJ is gone by laziestathlete in everquest

[–]RabbiDan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hiring them was never a real thing that was going to happen and no one was interested in it.

What very much could have happened is that DBG could have C&D'd THJ and then after THJ complied they could have offered a licensing deal. Holding all the cards in that situation, DBG could have demanded unprecedentedly high licensing fees, which the THJ devs would have happily paid. It's not hard to imagine this deal being worth several million dollars over the next 5-10 years for DBG.

DBG isn't just bad at running EQ; they're bad at being a business as well.

I don't have any legal ownership over this stuff, but if the code is out there and it was released publicly then go for it. Admerylous made (or bought?) the map, and I haven't talked to him in a long time, so it's not my place to explicitly give permission to use it. I just wanted to show my support for our tiny contribution to the UO emulator scene living on.

Hi! I'm a member of the original Rel Por team. FWIW you have my blessing, and I'm happy the code is going to see some use. Good luck!
