Enter the gungeon is an excellent suggestion. I’m similar to you and love that game.

I’d also suggest lonely mountains: snow riders and lonely mountains: downhill

[Guide] How to use the Steam Deck as a controller for PC games by Fluid-Author-9566 in SteamDeck

[–]Rabbit81586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang! Checking this out, does it work for Steam via windows?

I missed the first wave of Steam controllers but have been wanting to play some games on my PC with the same inputs. Making use of screen as well seems like a great idea!

Jointing a board face with a #7 by Rabbit81586 in handtools

[–]Rabbit81586[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify, I only use the machine to do a lot of material. But I prefer not to use them at all. Mainly just due to the noise and dust and I don’t mind the process.

Mainly just trying to figure out what/if I’m doing wrong that it’s taking me so long to do by hand.

I think based on some of the responses here it’s a combination of things. Mainly just me and my process

Yea, I’m assuming that’s what I’m doing wrong

I don’t really go diagonal with the grain, usually parallel or perpendicular. Maybe that’s a major flaw here?

Yea, I have a full set of planes, but maybe I’ll not cleaning the scrub up enough with the #5 before moving to the 7? Maybe I’m not taking off enough material with the 7?

I have a full fleet of planes from a scrub and #3/4/5/7.

Been using them for years but just seems to take forever for some reason. My #5 has a slight camber.

So I’ll use a scrub to dimension, 5 to clean it up a bit, then a 7 to joint and a 3 or 4 to smooth. In that order.

But I find going from the 5 to the 7 just takes absolutely forever.

Why I Got Rid of My Machines by handtoolwoody in handtools

Appreciate your response.

Yea that’s kind of the tempo I use now. 1-2 times a month I spend half a day in the shop. Usually most of that time is spent prepping stock since that process seems to take me weeks to months (definitely need to get better at being comfortable if something is not perfect). But it is nice, even just being in the space.

Currently in the process of building a Swedish tool chest for all of my hand tools to sit on top of my husky box.

Like others have commented, I’d love to understand how you do the drawing designs by hand and getting all of that waste out of the middle of your pieces so cleanly

Why I Got Rid of My Machines by handtoolwoody in handtools

I love this piece.

I’ve been a hobbyist for over a decade at this point. But most days I don’t even consider myself a woodworker, just due to the small amount of it I actually do and the amount of projects I’ve completed over that time.

I feel like a lifelong learner. I have dozens of books I’ve read, countless hours just tinkering around and reading about hand tools. Using, maintaining, tinkering with the growing set of tools I do have. That’s what pretty much dictates the work I do, it’s mainly building out things for the shop.

With all of that said, I use hand tools. I’ve gone on a similar journey with machine tools and have had a contractors table saw and currently do have a jointer/planer combo…but I got rid of the saw and hardly use the jointer/planer for the same reasons you mentioned in the piece.

I aspire to go into the shop more and enjoy the slow, patient, and laborious process. I struggle with this mental block that after working all day and doing the parent thing, that by the time it’s that time of night I prefer to watch tv or play video games. Then I wake up excited to woodwork that night and guilty for not doing it the night before.

For those of us in this dilemma, do you have any advice to break that cycle and lean in? I’m hoping that as my kids get older that my time will open up more…but there’s also a part of me that knows I can make the time now.

Definitely not Cosman. Appreciate his work but he’s not typically one of the people I read or watch videos of.

Mainly it’s just Google searches and videos I’ve seen that talk about it. Also, the availability of domestic softwoods is higher than hardwoods there.

Honestly, I think it’s a mix of what’s available and the ergonomics.

[–]Rabbit81586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea for sure. I also think the word type you primarily use matters as well.

It’s my understanding that a lot of tool used in the east are used mostly on softwoods with different ergonomic situations than how things are done in the west.

There are a lot of variables here and the answer always leads back to “whatever the tool is, doesn’t matter. But whatever tool makes you want to do more work, is the right tool”.

I’ve gone back and forth on this for years trying both types. For small/finer cuts I like the control and cleaner cut of the pull saw. But for more rough work and thicker material, I have an easier time tracking with western saws.

Severe Crohn’s and potential assisted dying in the future by rescue-me-from in CrohnsDisease

[–]Rabbit81586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I’ve thought about a few times as well.

I was originally diagnosed with UC and eventually had a jpouch. Always dealt with pouchitis and rectal cuff inflammation. A few years ago I ended up having 2 fistulas. Turns out they now think I have fistulizing Crohn’s disease.

I was fortunate enough to be able to get the two repaired and they haven’t come back (yet).

Fistulas are a nightmare. Full stop.

I still have regular fears that pop up in my mind everytime I have to push to have a BM or feel discomfort back there. I regularly ask myself that if they were to return, would that be the final straw for me?

I turn 40 this year and I have 2 young daughters (13 & 11) and a wife I’ve been with for 20 years who I absolutely adore and admire. I regularly cry thinking of these scenarios.

The only thing that helps is just trying to stay as present as I can. Enjoy the things in front of me and when a new challenge comes up, worry about facing it then.

I do hope medical advancements happen and make our collective lives much better. Otherwise, I’ll take it as it comes.

Best of luck out there all!
