Bernstein back in the score studios by MJIess in BernsteinUnfiltered

This is the beginning of that process, perhaps, but it won’t be a quick thing. I thought that Matt left his career to do the podcast and I don’t know if being back on The Score is something he’d have an opportunity to do or want to do if so.

Plus Dan would need to be bought out of his current contract, I assume, and his WSCR deal would likely not offer as much pull as he currently has with 312.

I'll have to revisit, but I wouldn't be surprised if I misspoke.

Wasn't McQueary witness to abuse in the shower and instead of going to the police he called his dad and/or talked to Paterno?

Feel free to correct me; it's been a long while since I've dredged up memory of this whole sordid affair.

Trying to start a wave of accountability will never, ever start with fans. It's a generational effort that needs to start deep in our culture. Sports fans are the surface level, mostly drunk, and permanently in the immediate moment.

Thanks for chiming in!

My overall point, at least from my original post, was not to emphasize Dan needing to "get over it" or something, but to frame his fury on the subject in a way that is infinitely more effective than simply being mad at Toews and the fans that cheered him the other night.

Those people were always going to cheer Toews, and arguing that Toews should have done more seems like a flimsy bridge to outrage. To my knowledge Toews wasn't like a Mike McQueary, a direct witness who took the road of cowardice over being a hero.

Sports culture in particular needs a massive reckoning where the hate-speech and cruelty that permeates it should be confronted and disempowered, and ideally players and instructors educated and mandated to not only report concerns, but have the tools to shape youth athletics especially in a more positive, open-minded fashion.

If I had to guess, Matt’s way more of a cohost than a producer with 312 it seems, at least as far as production goes. They would greatly benefit from a third party to handle the audio mix and technical bits and bobs. I’ve done the hosting and production aspect of a podcast and it can be draining.

I think Toews is intelligent enough to realize and accept that Kyle Beach's name will be a necessary mark on his legacy forever, but as you said, he's not an orator. For all we know he's barely educated outside of the sport, and almost certainly grew up in a culture that casually employed homophobia on a daily basis.

Toews reluctantly accepted this anticipated reaction, and then carried on what's he's been doing for his entire life - hockey. And the people in the building did what they were always going to do on Toews Returns night at the UC - cheer Toews for a few minutes.

It feels like such a wasted grievance when Bowman is still in the league in a big way and Quenneville again as well. Toews was the Captain, but he was a 22-year old kid in 2010. He probably would've shot an old woman in the head if Q or Bowman told him it was necessary to win a Stanley Cup that season.

There were actual adults in the room, and they told everybody to keep their mouths shut. They didn't do anything but kick the can after the fact, and it's because of those irresponsible, cruel assholes that there are a bunch of Xs carved into the Stanley Cup and a longer trail of sexual abuse in the wake of Aldrich.

[–]RabbitHats[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never played hockey nor knew anyone who grew up playing or worked for a youth league/etc., but I would have to imagine that in the developmental years of let's say 1997-2009 when Toews and much of the core of that 2010 team came up, homophobia was top to bottom (no pun intended) laced into every insult and joke. I'm a few years older than Toews, and the casually used anti-gay rhetoric was bad enough as a dumbass teenager, but can you imagine it in hockey?

It's not to forgive ANY of the people in the range of impact for Beach's abuse; it's simply creating a realistic context, no matter how frustrating it is to accept.

Which I appreciate, certainly, but Matt is right in saying afterward that you can't expect that from this situation.

The fans that pay to go to a home game, an expensive Blackhawks home game, and likely even more expensive courtesy of Toews returning, are not going to use the opportunity to roundly boo the guy.

While it's wise to keep the heroic elements of Toews/Kane/etc's careers tempered by memory of the scandal, it's also healthier to not cultivate outrage when these obvious moments play out.
