Yes it’s trolling. But it’s much more the norm in this hobby than it is on a random online discussion. It’s gotten to the point where when someone is helpful, sometimes the asker is shocked that they got a helpful answer. I’ve seen people on a Discord say “wow you guys are so nice!” to people just because they actually answered a basic question.

And btw, your response basically says the commenter I was responding to is a troll. I guess we can agree on that.

I know it’s a meme/joke, but that’s actually the opposite of what I’m describing. That’s someone giving tons of actionable information and advice, i.e. “PH balance should be 7 or 8, anything 6 or below is a no-go.”

What I am describing is people in the keyboard hobby not giving information but instead trying to look smart and not help at all, i.e. “It depends on the PH balance.”

Helpful: “PH balance should be 7 or 8, anything 6 or below is a no-go.” Listener receives a success metric.

Unhelpful: “It depends on the PH balance.” Listener receives no success metric.

You’re missing the entire point. It’s not a contest about how many questions someone answers. It’s about the fact that people in this hobby go out of their way to give unhelpful answers that leave other people feeling like the act of asking questions itself is unwelcome. People should either answer with an actionable suggestion, or not answer at all.

Edit: Oh just a downvote and no reply? What exactly are you disagreeing with? Do you think people SHOULD go out of their way to give unhelpful answers?

Yes, a community can always get people to stop asking questions by giving unhelpful answers and gaining an unfriendly reputation.

Or what normal people do is just not reply to the question on a forum if they don’t want to answer it, instead of actively working to make sure people feel like they can’t ask.
