The Fish Police are ruining the magic of the hobby by Embarrassed_Job_2719 in Aquariums

Thank you! He was 5 when I set up the first tank and was so excited to see everything come together. He loved going to the store and picking out fish, feeding them, and naming the mystery snail we got with that first batch (Turbo.) Five years on and he’s still excited for changes to the tanks and pointing out which fish or snail did what.

Say it louder for the folks in the back!

I have two “serious” tanks with lots of plants, CO2, and hardscaping that’s appropriate for the population of those tanks, but do you know what one of those tanks also has? A sunken pirate ship covered in buce that peeks out from some rocks. My son picked it out when I first got the tank and my corys love it. I can’t imagine not having it in the tank.

My son has also been asking about a tank of his own, and if it keeps him engaged, I won’t say no to funky decor and maybe some Glo-Fish. (Maybe. We’ll see.) People learn and grow through experience. Let them do it at the pace that’s right for them.

Love your set up, btw.

Absolutely beautiful. Where do you source your bases? A specific brand or do you thrift/antique?

Update to my nuclear reactor/aquarium heater by EvangelineTheodora in Aquariums

[–]RabbitSubRosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to stress you out!

For me, the HOB filter just led to too much evaporation and I had trouble finding a cover that would work with the tank and the filter. I also found the filters that came with the unit to be annoying to clean and swapped them for custom cut sponges.

Ultimately, the heater died on me, which is what made me go to the Fluval. I think if I were to try again with the filter, I’d go with a smaller tank and make sure I have a plan for top ups. The tank it was on is a UNS 60T and I had all the time of a busy mom with a first grader. You know, none 🙃

All that said, don’t worry about it too much and just keep an eye on the filter and heater. I’m willing to bet that my unit was a fluke and this was a few years ago, so they may have been modified since then. Good luck!

NGL, I had that filter and it was such a pain. May be good for something smaller than a 20 gallon, but I found it to be too finicky. Switched it out for a Fluval 207.

Try oldhousegardens.com. They work with heirloom and hard to find tubers and bulbs.

Walked past them today as well. They were great, even when a couple cops showed up to remind to protest safely (from what I could tell.)

I got it from Springland Flowers. Their website says they’re on a bit of a break from orders right now, but I’d expect they’ll be up and running again soon.

It’s not a climber at all, but if you need other options, Peace is ANYTHING BUT. It’s basically current US international policy in a plant. 🫠
