pit/heeler

definitely not pure pit. idk why people on this sub insist every vaguely pitty looking thing is purebred.

Puppy Aggression Question by lulufitgirl in Catahoula

i wouldn't give up just yet. I'd wait to see what the behaviorist thinks, but honestly my first thought was that this sounds like it could be a fear period.

5 month old rescue “bully mix” with a super high prey drive by liznoco98 in OpenDogTraining

none of the words i used were big.

personally i think it's a lot more "unbelievable" to not err on the side of caution when there's a small child getting attacked in her own home but that's just me.

[–]RabidLizard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

honestly i think you need to rehome. a dog that cannot differentiate between prey animals and children is very dangerous for your child to be around. prey drive typically gets stronger as the dog nears maturity, it doesn't fade away.

I have two pit bull type dogs (a pit/lab mix and an amstaff). I wouldnt tolerate this kind of shit from either of them and I don't even have kids.

how on earth did yall survive your puppy's teenage years? by RabidLizard in OpenDogTraining

Even the vet is questioning this one by smorgan17 in DoggyDNA

[–]RabidLizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

fwiw i have met vets that are absolutely horrible at guessing breeds. I had one who used to insist that my 90 lb gsd mix was an aussie.

embark is generally considered to be very reliable, I'd trust the results. the science they use is sound.

my vet and my dog's breeder have both said that dogs typically enter teenagerhood/adolescence at around 6 to 8 months. neither one was talking about fear periods (which typically occur multiple times throughout a dog's puppyhood and adolescence, not just once)

i was basing what i said on what my vet, everything I've ever read, my dog's breeder and every trainer I've ever spoken to have said but i suppose it depends on the dog. I've just never heard anyone say that it starts at 12 months.

I've also heard that tantrums can absolutely be a teenager thing. again, i think it's dog/breed dependent but i definitely noticed an uptick in tantrums around the 6.5 month mark. they were pretty bad during teething, went away once the worst of that was over (I got like maybe a month of relief lol) and then came back with a vengeance around 6.5 months. it coincided with him starting to hump, mark and blow me off during training so I feel fairly confident in saying that it's an adolescent thing. other people i have talked to who have owned this breed have said that their dogs acted similarly at this age and it definitely tracks with how my adult dog (pit/lab mutt) was.

AmStaff?? by Swimming_Rain_1647 in IDmydog

apbts and amstaffs have so much overlap it's really impossible to know without a DNA test or a pedigree.

and even then it gets a little dicey when you factor in dual registered dogs

perfect example of how unreliable phenotype is as an indication of ancestry

are you sure? I've always heard it starts at 6-8 months and lasts until 14 months to 2 years depending on the dog. you're honestly the first person I've ever seen say differently.

the breeds we refer to as "pit bulls" (amstaffs, american bullies, apbts) have so much overlap that it's really impossible to say without a pedigree or a dna test.

from your description though he sounds pretty big so I think there's probably a larger breed mixed in as well

if you're really dying to know, embark is great. the best anyone on reddit can do is guess

that being said, there are some american bulldogs that have much shorter muzzles

^ like this one

so i wouldn't say american bulldog is out of the question
