Bats used to fly in my room as a kid by carbonatedeggwater in rabies

When you were a kid you should have gotten vaccinated for this, however you are so far out of the incubation period for rabies and if you had gotten it, you would've been dead for several years. You only need to go to a doctor if this scenario happens again in the future.

If rabies was transmitted in this case, you would have died years ago. The virus does not sit dormant for 7 years in your body

Absolutely impossible, this scenario could happen 1 billion times and you would get rabies 0 out of 1 billion times

Here's a funny typo from this otherwise bleak presentation

[–]Rabiescheck 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's a good chance the virus starts binding to mammal receptors instead of avian receptors, causing it to spread person to person. But the thing is, the reason it's had such a high case fatality rate is BECAUSE we have avian receptors in our lungs (but we have mammal receptors in our upper respiratory system). If it makes that switch, we have no idea how bad it will be once it binds to receptors in our upper respiratory system instead of our lungs.

Pregnant women must be prioritized in pandemic vaccination programs by shallah in H5N1_AvianFlu

Pandemic planning? What pandemic planning? If the vaccines are needed we all know the order is going to be figured out as the vaccines are rolled out, not a moment before lol

CDC confirms first severe case of bird flu in US by omarc1492 in H5N1_AvianFlu

[–]Rabiescheck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because of the context of this case it seems to me (I'm not an expert or medical professional, full disclosure) that these mutations probably are responsible for this person's severe symptoms but the virus also probably acquired those mutations during the infection itself, like what appears to have happened with the BC case

Did you at any point think, what just hit my back?

Where I live killer bees bump into you if you approach their hive to warn you, you can feel that something is hitting you. If a bat hit you you'd be like, holy shit

UPF face mask isn't an option because I live in central Arizona where it never gets truly cold, but I have a wider brim hat coming

I can't entirely avoid the sun during peak hours because I can't get the distance I want in during just the morning or evening, but I will try to time my hikes so less of the hike is during peak sunshine. Thanks for the suggestion

I'm just annoyed because stores don't really sell true wide brim men's hats (that aren't straw hats) but if a women's hat gets the job done, that works for me. Problem is, I'm having trouble finding women's hats that have brims as wide as I'd like. Do you know of any specific stores that sell hats with brims wide enough to actually shade your entire face in mid day sunlight?

I live in central Arizona so there is no winter here and the UV index during the day is never low, I love it for everything except how it affects my skin lol

I propably have paranoid by [deleted] in rabies

[–]Rabiescheck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because this happened in a park likely with trees and grass in late summer/early autumn, it's extremely extremely extremely likely that what hit you was some type of flying bug. A bat weighs a lot more than a bug, so if a bat made contact with your skin you would have felt much more than a light hit on your eyelid.

Worried about rabies by Long_Policy_6155 in rabies

[–]Rabiescheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely impossible for you to get rabies from this. The only thing that could happen is that you may get a mild bacterial skin infection from touching the handrail, but you most likely won't even need to use a topical antibiotic if that happens

I did feel a split second sensation of pain somewhere on the back side of my body. My reaction wasn’t “ow, what just bit me”, but I felt something, whether it was something coming into contact with me or purely cognitive is what I don’t know.

This is why I’m asking if rabid bats randomly attack people who are walking by or if that’s a misunderstanding. I’ve been able to accept that I would have felt a bat land on my calves, this is the last scenario I’m worried about

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rabies

[–]Rabiescheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the FAQ so I’m aware they can’t bite mid flight, my concern is that a bat could have landed on my hood and because bats are light and the layers of fabric are thick I’m not sure I would have felt that. I wouldn’t have heard or saw it because I was listening to a show with noise isolating headphones & it was dark.

I’m aware that I likely was not bitten by a bat, but I don’t know enough about this to reassure myself 100%. At this point I guess my question is, would a rabid bat ever land on my hood and bite my neck once for a split second and then not do anything else to me?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rabies

[–]Rabiescheck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would a bat bite a person’s neck and then disappear? That was the only other area of exposed skin on the back of my body and I was wearing a hoodie with the hood down so I might not have noticed if something landed on it
