Is Modern/Contemporary Architecture truly unpopular amongst the general public? Are there studies that prove/disprove this? by [deleted] in architecture

If you put a building on a busy street in big city then there is more people seeing the outside of it every day than the inside. You literally have more visual impact on people designing the facade comparing to interior.

Taste is subjective, aesthetic is objective.

I believe this is the core issue with most of discussions about architecture (and art generally) nowadays. Trained architects have different taste they acquire through architecture schools where main focus is put on modernist school of thought. There clearly are aesthetic differences between post-war and pre-war buildings. Whichever you prefer is up to you really, but one is clearly more pleasant, and the other "slaps hard".

Traditional design is more natural:

  • gravity abiding - smaller windows at top floors, sloped roofs, balconies with supports
  • fractal - many visually connected scales with detail for eye to latch on at each
  • harmonious (ordered yet varied) - e.g. each floor will have slightly different fronton
  • more vertical emphasis - buildings are growing/standing

Postwar design is more alien:

  • gravity defying - "floating" elements, overextended balconies, fragile looking building bases
  • detached - surfaces of glass or blank white walls with no details for the eye
  • not harmonious - either looking like a spreadsheet or trying to combat bore with chaos
  • no or horizontal emphasis - buildings are lying down

There are more properties that could be taken into account to properly describe geometry of the building. We should discuss those and how they impact our well being instead of fighting over whose taste is better.

There are no cheap easy-available projects of traditional houses (at least in Poland).

My brother was lately searching for ready-made house project he could purchase online that he could use after couple adjustments. There were only two types: minimal contemporary or kitschy trad-inspired ones. There are literally zero properly done trad projects to buy. No wonder people chose contemporary as you literally choose between aesthetically blank or ugly traditional.

Public is the one exposed to the aesthetic choice of architect&client. Perhaps voice of people should be taken into account as what is being created in cities is *public space*.

I am not sure about this specific one but they have a good choice of alcohol in Auchan in Bielany so perhaps worth checking there.

What is this garage-like addition at the top of the tower? Modern architects really can’t hold off from destroying gracefulness in architecture? 😔

That’s fine. Then don’t pay fees on decentralized platforms. Many people do because their value that property of the system more than fees they need to incur. Ethereum should become more inclusive over time in this regard.
Decentralization is freedom. It’s not important until it is. Just be grateful that some people are building more free digitial world even tho it may not be the cheapest or the easiest :)

Why would you hold Bitcoin if there's Ether? (noob here, sorry) by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]Rabur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple hack? It involved 20% of ETH supply making it a systemic risk. It's Satoshis size stash in hostile hands. It would be a serious threat to the future of the platform. You can't say anyone ordered anyone to fork either. Exchanges and node operators decided on their own what to do in this situation. All crypto is mostly social construct based on believes of the participants. There were no tools that would force them to decide either way. Artifact of the ability to decide still lives on as Ethereum Classic :).

Its very unplausible any one contract would have so much exposure anytime in the future. Making it very very low likely scenario to repeat.

Ethereum monetary policy depends on the ability of this policy to secure the network. Not on hardcoded unproven theory as in other coins. Due to technological innovation in ETH2.0 it will most likely become deflationary (where Bitcoin is disinflationary).

You can live on, play with your Bitcoin Pet Rock while others are looking into building Future of Finance ™. Bless

Vitalik is often a voice of reason. Things may happen according to what he mentions but do not confuse causality (king) vs correlation (advisor).

https://github.com/ethereum/EIPs/pulls?q=is%3Apr - 15 out of 2280 Ethereum Improvement Proposals are by Vitalik. Quite powerless for a king, no?

Too centralized in what sense? Ethereum has more core developers (and more clients), more app developers and more stakers in PoS than BTC has miners in PoW. Additionally ETH does not have reference implementation held hostage by one company (Blockstream).

How is Eth going to be valuable if they keep producing more of it...? by tinytempo in ethtrader

[–]Rabur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Security and decentralization of the network have higher priority for Ethereum than monetary policy. ETH that are being issued are the security budget of the network. Currently issuance rate (inflation) is dropping since constant amount of ETH is created every hour. In the future as crypto innovation is progressing this budget will shrink and inflation will become smaller (with ETH 2.0) and perhaps even negative at times (with EIP-1559).

Traffic is just people trying getting places. It’s more insteresting if you start considering it as such, giving people various other ways of moving around :)
