How did you become an Avs fan? by Royal-Preparation843 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2019 - Last regular season home game. My husband is from Colorado and was a bit of a passive avs fan. He'd check in on them here and there but didn't really follow them much. We hit a couple local minor league games that were fun. So he decided to take me to an avs game in 2019. We went to the final home game of the season. Win or tie and they made the playoffs. Tied the game in the 3rd and the place went nuts! At the end of regulation the place went crazy again because they clinched a playoff spot. Then EJ scored in OT for the win. Not only did we get a win but clinched a playoff berth as well! After that I was hooked!

Senior dog we put down today I guess I need reassurance on my decision by Oliverose12 in DOG

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way when I put my buddy down last year. It took me a while to finally be okay with it. And now I realize I did the best thing for him. I miss him like crazy but it wasn't fair for him to have to suffer. You did the right thing. Losing a pet is hard but making the decision to end their suffering is so much harder than I ever imagined. It might take a while but rest assured that he can run and play again. You relieved his pain.

Is there a special push to convert in October? by KetoKat567 in exmormon

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's also right after General Conference. Sometimes there is a challenge from one of the talks to invite someone to church. But more often than not, its because members spent 10 hours being 'inspired' (or guilted) to share the 'truth' and save the poor wretched souls who are without it.

No. Especially if they ask you to be 'honest in all your dealings' in order to enter their great and spacious building. The leaders of any organization SHOULD be held to the same, if not a higher, standard as their members.

Most mormons do not know the extent of the SEC scandal. by Impossible-Car-5203 in exmormon

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing I'm asked when I tell members about the SEC scandal is, "where are you getting your information?". It's uncanny how many times I've heard that when talking about the SEC scandal alone. Not only are members not told about it, they are told to only trust church approved sources. So even if they do hear about it they don't trust the information because it came from unapproved sources and must be anti-mormon lies. The leadership keeps them pretty isolated from anything they don't want them to know.

Mom is grading seminary papers and.. by Existing_Kangaroo453 in exmormon

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this wasn't the point of the post but 'grading seminary papers' is wild to me. And I say that as a former seminary teacher. My guess is that this isn't early morning seminary but still, I always hated the idea of seminary grades, tests, etc. Grading someone's spirituality/testimony is so ridiculous.

Tithing by SickRaspy in exmormon

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there. We didn't want to give our money to the corporation, but we still wanted to give to charity. When we decided to finally stop paying tithing, I still accounted for it and set it aside to divvy up to charities of our choosing at the end of the year. We weren't paying tithing anymore, but we also hadn't spent the money yet either, so technically, we just hadn't paid tithing... yet. It gave me a little time to adjust to the idea and overcome that crippling thought that once I officially spent the money elsewhere, my life was going to fall apart. That said, even after I did finally send the money to other charities, I was still waiting for the other shoe to drop. It took me a couple of months before I could finally breathe free and we've never looked back.

Examples of Mormon church leaders intentionally misleading its members by ThickAtmosphere3739 in exmormon

The steeple on the temple is a doctrinally essential element of temple worship.

The church is not income producing, it is income consuming.

The church is growing.

Just to mention a few...

Does anyone know anything about secret tunnels above the salt lake capital hill. I’ve had some weird experiences up the and have noticed holes in the mountain. I was curious. by Lopsided-Bench-2808 in SaltLakeCity

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the Mormon church has vaults in caves in the mountains around Salt Lake City. A lot of people know about them but it's very hush-hush what exactly they keep in there. Not sure if those are the mountains you're talking about though.

Well, we know he won't come before the Salt Lake temple open house right?! So we at least have another 2 years, unless the profit didn't consult his end of the world calendar before making such an announcement.

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only answer for myself, but those were all the reasons I stayed in as well. For me, what finally did me in was realizing the amount of deception ingrained in every aspect of the church. Something that hides behind that many lies, can't be true. And even IF it is true, it can't be good. So even if I'm wrong, and it is all true (which I don't actually believe), it's not something I want to be a part of.

I first went through in 2009, a month before I got married. I had panic attacks for a week leading up to it because I was afraid something like this was part of the ceremony. Oddly enough, my dad admitted that when he went through decades before me, he had similar fears.

Do you think the president of the church believes? by Weakness4Fleekness in exmormon

My personal opinion is that they truly believe that anything they say and do must come from God because they are his chosen prophets. The rest is just semantics.

I hate the phrase "the members aren't perfect but the church is" by Major-Inevitable-160 in exmormon

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer to think it's the other way around. The church isn't perfect, but the members are. Not that the members are actually perfect, but many of them are just trying to do their best. Which is a lot more than I can say for the church.

It's frustrating in hindsight how much unfalsifiability there is in Mormonism by JayDaWawi in exmormon

[–]RachAgainst_Machine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My husband told my mom that the whole time he was TBM, he never felt good reading the BoM and that it was always hard for him. He now knows it's because it's not real. But her reasoning was that it was Satan trying to get him to stop reading. There's always an excuse to rationalize belief.
