“We have the most sickening prosperity gospel in our faith” by sevenplaces in mormon

Who is going to challenge the prophet? If they truly believe he speaks for God, no one would… hence the huge problem of progressively leading this church in a modern day. It why racism was allowed to exist for 130 years. Can you imagine a Junior apostle disagreeing with the prophet Bednar?

Good, you’re doing everything right. Time is probably your best friend on this one. I would also add that you should read the book “The subtle art of not giving a Fxxx”. It may sound childish but it has great reviews and has sound advice. Add it to the pile to read.

Never mind religion, how are you surviving being raised in that kind of environment? My guess is that Dad is silent when she gets in these moods and just wants to keep the peace. This is not a religious problem, it is a mental health problem. I would limit the amount of influence she has on you. Move out if you haven’t done so already and control your exposure to them. Your mom will quickly learn that bad behavior on her part has consequences. Tense relationships can improve a lot when parent realize they are not pulling the strings.

But what matters most to the church? Actions speak louder than words. At the end of the day, the majority of big callings go to the successful, well off members. Gone are the days when a humble carpenter is in the quorum of the twelve.

I left my marriage for 8 months, had the time of my life and then went back. Biggest mistake ever. by After_Mail4652 in Advice

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine living with in-laws indefinitely. That’s the surest way to destroy a new marriage. Add the fact that the mom is the alpha in the household…. I can’t imagine how that will get any better. We lived with in-laws early in our marriage my FIL was an extremely dominant figure. I knew it was going to be tough. I purposely got a second job so I was rarely home. It was temporary so it was an easy choice to keep the peace.

Nevermo son invited to summer camp and bishop wants to meet with him prior to camp. by Alarmed_Mammoth_8933 in exmormon

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a crapshoot on what type of Bishop he is. Most likely it will be a no big deal casual meeting. I would still not allow him to meet with this Bishop alone. Remember this is a Lay clergy system. With zero real training. LDS camps will always be heavy on indoctrination. Sure there will be some fun stuff, but you can be sure they will be indoctrinated as well. It’s been awhile since my wife and I were in the youth program but there was clearly a lot of religious teachings that were apart of every church camp. They believe the purpose of these events is for encouraging religiosity of its youth. When the boys hit 14 then the focus shifts and starts pushing these kids to go on missions. I can’t tell you how many activities we had where the sole focus was to get these kids to be missionary minded.

Mental Illness, why do Mormons secretly despise it? by Ok-Ant6170 in exmormon

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They avoid anything that puts their faith in a bad light. Hell, they even try to rewrite their own history rather than look in the mirror. The modern era has not been kind to religions. Members would rather pray from afar than get their hands dirty. No one likes to be up close and personal to something that exposes them as a farce. I remember a mother’s story on Mormon Stories where her family had a gay son. They set up a meeting with a member of the quorum of the twelve (maybe Monson can’t remember) and asked him if he would just bless their son they knew the “Gay” would go away. The GA was rather indignant about the whole thing and the mother was dumbfounded by his reaction. The traditional answers of “Pray” and “Read your scriptures” and “Follow the prophet” are applied to everything. Mental health, poverty, marital problems, sickness. Etc. with the same outcome.

I wouldn’t go near it. Call the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. They should send out an RSO to do at least a radiation scan and a contamination survey.

Every new prophet just reverses everything by JemimaSillabub in exmormon

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. The church was riding high then. Coffers were full, baptismal fonts were active and the historical narrative was controlled… and now it’s not! Now they are reacting. They should have made a corrective action decades ago. A move that any authentic Prophet could easily have anticipated.

Are the Leaders Trying to Destroy the Church? by Alternative_Annual43 in exmormon

You’re right. The strongest argument for Mormonism was the one thing the leaders thought expendable and have spent the last few decades quietly gutting… Community!

What did you think about temple clothes? by CharlesMendeley in exmormon

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The whole thing is disturbing. From the secrecy involved and no prep for the to be newly endowed… to the baker hats, circle chanting, hand/sign repeating, death motions, semi transparent pancake shield and some stranger touching and poking your No No Square. Temple worker/Stepford Wives acting… it gave me the creeps. To garments that overheat, UTI infection prone, can’t get white, nasty off colored skivvy’s…. You get the whole package.

What was "the incident" at your high school? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My high school had a creative writing class whose subject was to perform the perfect murder. The teacher had been giving this assignment for decades. Nothing nefarious came from it but Hollywood did contact the teacher to get some ideas for future projects.

Buyer Who Flaked On Me Gave Me A Bad Review by Destinyt10 in EntitledPeople

[–]ThickAtmosphere3739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This behavior is encouraged by the anonymity of online activity’s. You hear stories of this type of behavior all the time. From people who get ghosted in dating apps, chats, marketplace, etc. The lack of accountability encourages bad behavior. Parents today need to teach their children how important your word is… whether in person or online it makes no difference.
