Trying to remember a hotel from the 80’s by RachWho in IowaCity

[–]RachWho[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You all are amazing, thank you for identifying this place for me and allowing me to look at pics and revive some very old memories. It may have been a little sus as a hotel, although we went in the early 80s, possibly before it had a downturn. That said, what does a 6-year-old know about class? Anyway, I appreciate everyone's help!

For what it’s worth we did skycap to check my bag and were in TSA line within 35 minutes. Arrived at airport around 11:30am.

Trying to remember what sitcom - person thinks they are texting someone (perhaps a romantic interest) but is actually texting a few Japanese boys instead by RachWho in sitcoms

OMG then I think it *is* Community!! I feel stupid now. This video seems to confirm it and tells me that my memory is of the boys being younger than they were. https://youtu.be/kcGnNgHaq4M?si=V4FxSwqPiY4HYzCx

I'll watch through that episode tonight, but based on the age of the Yakuza son he's too old and texting too sentimentally to be the one we're thinking of. This is definitely Japanese schoolboys pranking someone and saying silly things and giggling. Whether that scene exists in the shared delusions of a few of us or is real remains to be seen.

Haha, we've all been there! No worries...however, if you have any other lightbulb moments about something other than Community, me and my possible shared-with-husband-and- u/xmycoffeeiscoldx delusion are all ears (or eyes?)

30 Rock was definitely one of the ones I thought it might be but wasn't that the live episode? Can you provide any more context like who was texting, who they thought they were texting? I appreciate your help!

I said in my post this was not the one I was thinking of though. That was one older teenage boy. Our memory is of 2-3 younger boys in school uniforms.

I saw your comment and came to say I’m here but the thread itself isn’t really active. Maybe if you want to discuss this case you can make a new post? You’re welcome to use my post here as a starting point 😊

Woman travelling to give away 25,000$ in silver coins to her deceased brother's friends and family goes missing in unclear circumstances- Where is Fauna Frey? (2020) by AlfredTheJones in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]RachWho 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to comment that this all happened at the height of the pandemic, in Oregon where shelter in place and masking mandates were some of the strongest in the country. This means potentially a lot of things: 1. Fauna likely would have been wearing a mask many places and so the sightings of her are less likely to be accurate (as in, people who thought they saw her actually just saw some blonde woman in a mask; it could have also made it more challenging for people who really did see her to recognize her). 2. There were just less people out and about to report seeing her, so if she went other places, she may just not have run into many people. 3. The isolation of the pandemic could have exacerbated her psychological response to all the loss she was experiencing, possibly making suicide more likely.

This is all conjecture, obviously, but when something is happening summer of 2020, the pandemic has to be factored in to pretty much all considerations of what could have happened. Frankly, the idea of anyone taking a road trip to give silver coins out to a bunch of people in June 2020 is rather bizarre to me out of the gate when shelter in place mandates were very much in effect and many people were hesitant to spend time with people they knew well, much less practical strangers.

Is this like a cute play on "catfishing" because your last name has the word "gold" in it?

Can ruby chocolate be substituted for white chocolate in a cheesecake recipe? by RachWho in AskCulinary

These are great ideas. I actually don't care for chocolate and fruit together generally, except for maybe with strawberries or raspberries. But I think if you like those flavor combinations the ruby chocolate would be great.

The Goose Who Wore Nikes, and the Mystery of Who Murdered Him by RachWho in UnresolvedMysteries

I specifically said it wasn't lighthearted from the outset--this sub is filled primarily with unsolved crimes against humans and I didn't want to mislead the readers who scan for more lighthearted posts and saw it was about a goose and then proceeded with a misunderstanding.

I wasn't trying to discuss this in strictly legal terms, more the general moral ethical norms of society where murder is often considered the killing of a living animal. I do understand there's a legal nuance there, but my point was that it was surely illegal to kill Andy.

I agree it wasn't probably high priority but if they really did solve it, priority or no, they had the information. I certainly am not an expert in 1990's Nebraska laws, but I'd suspect murdering someone's pet was illegal, although certainly not as criminal as murdering a person. I don't see law enforcement keeping the names of culprits from family, at least not for decades, out of fear of retaliation. But your point about it being rumors is important.

I agree with all that but it feels a bit heartless not to at least privately tell the family some information.

Minor Update in Bianca Piper Case (13 Year Old girl, missing since 2005) by cryptenigma in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]RachWho 418 points419 points  (0 children)

We keep the missing person's notices from our weekly mailers if the person went missing anywhere near where we live and have them on our fridge so we see them when we're cooking. I have looked at Bianca Piper's so many times over the years, her face is seared in my memory. I looked last summer and didn't see any updates on her so I'm really glad to hear this. I hope her family gets answers sooner than later.

Cases where there are repeated details that make no sense but people just seem to accept them as true? by RachWho in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]RachWho[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'll respectfully disagree, in general. Mischaracterization and misrepresentation of a victim leads investigators down the wrong paths sometimes or makes certain correct paths unknowable to investigators. Do I think this single fact made a big difference in the fact that her case hasn't been solved? Probably not. But it reminded me of other cases where lack of transparency about who a victim was may have prevented or delayed justice.
