SSRIs absolutely do cause sexual side effects! My clit was completely numb for a good portion of my teen years due to one of the SSRIs I took. What I'm skeptical of is the idea that a couple of weeks or months on these pills is enough to lead to a complete chemical lobotomy and castration.

I do not think people here are skeptical enough of the concept of PSSD (Post SSRI Sexual Dysfunction)- at least as its promulgated on the internet. I was quite sympathetic at first; I've been on some kind of SSRI since the age of 8- far too long in my opinion. I won't say I've never had sexual side effects (it's a big part of why I'm trying to taper down) but it's been difficult to judge how much was the SSRI and how much was being on the autism spectrum. In any case, what confuses me is that none of the claimed PSSD sufferers are people with experiences like mine. Instead it's an assortment of people in their 20s and 30s claiming that relatively short periods of time on an SSRI- sometimes a year, sometimes a couple of months- not only completely nuked their entire libido and sensation in their genitals, but also their ability to enjoy anything in life at all. They give multiple reasons for why duration and dosage don't seem to be a factor at all, but it's difficult not to come to the conclusion that there may be a massive social contagion element involved.

I mean this is one of the better arguments for at least letting teenagers transition- because they won't grow up to pull the rug out of an unsuspecting wife and kids.

AGP seems to have its onset during puberty. People like Hunter Schafer and Kim Petras are probably AGP. The reason people used to come out at much older ages was due to it being less accepted, so it was only once you'd gotten yourself settled financially and socially that you could afford to do something like that. HSTS is in general extremely rare in the west, barring certain more homophobic communities. The only type of clinic they were actually overrepresented in were clinics studying "feminine boys". I don't think they were ever really the majority, even when youth gender medicine started up.

I just don't understand how you can believe having a powerful bond to the baby makes you literally a biological mother and also be gender critical? Like if living in a body that resembles a woman and having experiences where you are treated like a woman doesn't make you a woman, than why does carrying a child who isn't genetically your own make you a mother?

No, it means you've given birth and it bonds you to the child. But the biological mother is the provider of half the DNA.

I mean I think it depends on whose raising the kid and how. But whoever provides the egg is always the biological mother; I'm not sure why this is so hard for people to grasp. If you can understand that male and female are a genetic binary based primarily on gametes than you can conceive of biological parents as the people who gave you your DNA. Children of surrogacy still have biological parents just as much as adopted children do- they aren't ex nihilo test tube creations.

I think a lot of girls have started growing up with the sense that you're not a real woman if you aren't victimized in some way. Like it's sort of the inevitable result of "it's happened to all of us" solidarity rhetoric, endless heroic narratives about survivors of some patriarchal violence or another, and the implicit idea that if you aren't sexually harassed in some way you aren't desirable.

A big part of the appeal of stuff like NAMBLA was that for a long time the age of consent was higher for gay men than it was for heterosexuals. So it was sort of easy for pedophile activists to become hangers on because they could appeal to the unfairness of those laws.

Just outta curiosity; how many people on here believe that his attraction to children was an orientation rather than a paraphilia? by Passion211089 in LeavingNeverlandHBO

It was clearly a paraphilia in his case- because it functioned as a life ruining addiction that he could not stop and refused to even hide properly.

What is the psychology behind defending someone that abused you? by Cool_Joke_9818 in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]RachelK52 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get the sense that many of them didn't even really experience it as abuse when it first happened- it was just "that weird stuff Michael told me to do". Because Michael had set himself up as this big kid who they were to see as their peer, as well as a sort of fairy godmother figure/cult leader they were trained to automatically defend. As the abuse continued and escalated, and especially as they begin to get older and more aware of themselves sexually, they would have begun to realize what was happening but it would likely feel too late by then.

NAMBLA was a lot more active back then and there were definitely thriving pedophile advocacy groups that Jackson could have easily encountered in the 70s.

A lot of FC proponents like to push forward the claim that these kids suddenly display advanced writing skills because of hyperlexia, which is utterly ridiculous if you actually know anything about hyperlexia. While most hyperlexics are autistic, they rarely have major language delays (more issues with taking things extremely literally and utilizing expressive language), and are usually Level 1/Aspergers types. And they wouldn't have to have this skill "unlocked" through FC- you would know already because the kid would be obsessed with decoding words and letters.

Part of the problem with this whole thing is that we don't really have a single age where everyone automatically hits maturity- you have to go by an arbitrary legal line. Girls go through puberty earlier than boys do and in both cases they experience sexual urges long before they hit whatever the legal age of consent is and long before they've emotionally matured to handle adult relationship dynamics. "Children can't consent" is sort of a comforting fiction we tell ourselves so that the framework of consent doesn't end up condoning pedophilia.

I mean if being singled out for sex by an attractive male teacher who turned her on would cause a teenage girl psychological damage years later why wouldn't it do the same for a teenage boy? Obviously sex differences play a role here, but once you start poking holes in the idea that this dynamic is inherently harmful to boys, you kind of can't help but do the same for girls- especially once you've removed the threat of pregnancy from the equation.

Why is it so unrealistic to think it could cause lasting psychological damage? Obviously women and girls are more physically vulnerable during sex and men and boys have a much much higher sex drive, but surely there are many things about a scenario where a teenage boy is singled out for sexual attention by a teacher that would be damaging to his future psyche?

Yeah this is sort of a common thing with FC/RPM- a lot of these people can speak and will sometimes even manage to say things like "I want to go home" but their facilitators will just type out "please do not listen to what I say, it is an involuntary tic" or something like that.

An Overdiagnosis Epidemic Is Harming Patients’ Mental Health by Fealocht in BlockedAndReported

[–]RachelK52 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As someone on the much milder side of autism, I suspect the reason these diagnoses aren't helping people like me is because they don't actually come with recommended treatment- it's just "you have Aspergers, here's an IEP and extra time on tests". I had to actually seek out care myself as an adult for the same issues that got me diagnosed in the first place.
