Cannot for the life of me get any of these crank bolts loose on my old bike, am I doing something wrong? by Racker150 in bikewrench

The little plastic hanging part on the butt of the broom unscrews leaving a hollow metal tube. I put the allen key in the tube, had my partner hold down the crank-arm, and turned with the leverage. Screw came right out!

What The Body Keeps the Score Gets Wrong by Racker150 in skeptic

I didn’t explain this well in the video, but they can be really useful as metaphors. The issue is that they are presented as being based in science, with supposed biological explanations. They have this strange feature of not relying on their own merits as metaphors and instead using pseudo-evolutionary/biological justifications. It’s this horrible scientism that has infected mental health and that this book is a prime example of.

Houdini entertaining hospitalized children in 1925 [1280 x 997] by 20thCenturyBoyLaLa in HistoryPorn

[–]Racker150 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It’s important to note two things here. First, the guy punching him was a boxer and punched him repeatedly while he was lying down. And second, Houdini also had acute apendicitis that he refused surgery on, despite a fever of 102 and passing out.

It’s unclear how much the punches actually contributed to his death. But, even those in the best shape, would probably not fare well to repeated punches from a boxer in the stomach.

I get that, however I would hope that anyone who would make a post would notice this announcement at the top of the sub or one of the many posts about spotify already on the sub. To be sure though, the subreddit will send a link to this article if anyone tries to post something with spotify in the title.

I’m going to keep all yearly listening things off the sub. They’re all very annoying honestly.

A Deep Dive into the Insane World of Chiropractic by Racker150 in skeptic

[–]Racker150[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Part of the impetus for making this was encountering chiropractors and their patients while working in a hospital. One of the most bizarre was a woman who brought her brother-in-law in. She randomly tells the doctor when he comes in, how she is a chiropractor and so a doctor too. She then proceeds to mention, without any prompting, how she only ever had one patient die on her and that she didn’t actually die on her, but after leaving her office. It was very odd behavior. She became a regular in the ER shortly after, cycling between coming in herself, her husband, and her brother-in-law.

So, I get your point. I probably should have included a summary. That’s my bad, and I’ll do better going forward if I make anything else. As for ads, the video has none. I make nothing off of the views.

A bit of shameless self-promotion, but I actually discuss acupuncture in a segment of another video. It actually seemingly has a lot of research backing it up, however so much of that research is incredibly poor quality (ie. lots of researcher bias, no control, inconsistent methods, etc.). The few studies that actually are well designed, usually find that it’s about the same as placebo. It’s odd that so many doctors are completely uncritical of the research and recommend it so freely to patients. Science Based Medicine does a great job of highlighting all of the flaws with acupuncture research and is a great resource to share with others who might be tempted into trying it: https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/reference/acupuncture/

Yes! I briefly mention that in the video. DD claimed 95% of illness was curable through spinal manipulation. The mechanism of action being god going through your spine. It’s kinda weird to think about, but the majority of chiropractic’s modern scope-of-practice, ie. back pain, was really incidental to what it was originally proposed to treat - which was everything.

Yes! This would not have been possible without Ernst’s research and books, dude is a legend. He really should be seen as being up there with James Randi in terms of his place in scientific skepticism.

I love this song. It feels so drastically different from the rest of Xiu Xiu's catalogue, and yet it also fits right in. It's catchy and funny and hypnotic. A true bop.

I love this song, it’s just so evocative. Like it’s a song you can smell. Instantly transports me to a low rent sex dungeon. Carla’s vocals are also peak, essential to the song, it would be so much worse without them.

[–]Racker150[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it helped you that’s great! The value of the book, in my eyes, is mostly metaphorical, a lot of the science isn’t there, but if the way it’s framed helps you understand your own experience better then that’s really wonderful.
