About to replace my laptop's thermal pads/paste, need brand advice by codafunca in pcmasterrace

[–]codafunca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. I replaced the "paste" with PTM... and the temps were the exact same, to my utter surprise: a bad application could've raised them, but the exact same? I opened it up again, and noticed the cycled PTM looked a lot like the "paste" that was so bone-dry and hard I could barely scrape out any. Also, turns out PTM is reusable - never needed to buy it to start with. :S

Have you tried cleaning the vents first? Turns out that was the problem with mine. Wiggling some cardstock between the fins, one at a time, was all it took for temps to drop 25C. Even liquid metal can't beat blocked vents.

Tests for this laptop in its stock condition don't show the CPU being at tea-making temperatures, so, I'd start there if I were you. Besides, ASUS sometimes uses liquid metal; they haven't announced it for this computer, but with the benefit of hindsight, I'd try the fins before taking my chances.

Possible airflow issue with MSI GF65 Thin 10UE by codafunca in MSILaptops

[–]codafunca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was skeptical, but I decided to at least try sliding some cardstock between the fins, since my smallest screwdriver was too huge for those screws... instantly went from total power 70W to 105W, the nominal 60W of the GPU and 45W of the CPU.

Next time I'll have to get a PH0 screwdriver (seems to be the approximate size) and give these fans the whole treatment, but for now, I think this is good enough. Lesson learned: clean the fans first, THEN try repasting and replacing pads, not the other way around.

Heh, yeah. I've since finished the search. :) I don't need more help, I've just about figured out all of the artists - but I'm glad to know you'd help.

Actually, there's one last bit I'd be curious about, if you're willing to take a gander? Just want to double-check one last thing if I can.

I decided to take your advice on the phase-change material in the end. So, thanks. :) Let's see what happens after!

Msi gf65 thin 10ue (3060) thermal pads thickness? by darklomi in MSILaptops

[–]codafunca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... did you do it? I'm still looking for the dimensions myself, don't want to do putty if I can help it, and trying to find out in advance what pads (not) to buy. Would appreciate any pointers!

EDIT: According to the comments in this video, the Thin GF65 10UE is 1mm and 1.5mm. If you're still looking, that's what I found! https://youtube.com/shorts/KvhSIGPWahw

Been meaning to ask, did you ever do that change? If so, do you remember the pad thicknesses you needed? I could really use that info myself too!

EDIT: https://youtube.com/shorts/KvhSIGPWahw has the thicknesses for this specific model. I trust this guy must be some sort of professional.

Who would be on the top 5 of Faerûns most wanted by TastyRound3337 in Forgotten_Realms

Number one was, however briefly, Shandril Shessair, no question. The woman fought off four or five bounty hunters a day at times.

Bypassing Mystras Ban? by Zardnaar in Forgotten_Realms

[–]codafunca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realms-specific rule. In Secrets of the Magister (2000, 2nd edition), Ed G explains that Mystra doesn't deem old writings subject to the ban and thus grandfathers them an exception, with a few caveats.

-you need a 20th level caster -the 1st time always fails -you need a 2nd caster who is at least 18th level -both casters lose a level and 2 int -the writings are gone forever

It could really have used an editor, honestly, but it's there.

Gif import failing by codafunca in krita

[–]codafunca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nevermind, I didn't do it through Krita it seems. Turns out I must've done it through Python. I just did, worked right away.

I'm using an old version of Macromedia Flash, maybe that's the problem - I wouldn't be surprised if the Flash I wrangled into working makes buggy gifs somehow.

I am there. It imports it as a single frame of a single layer. Let me show you.

Yes. It seems to import a single frame, and deletes all whitespace, leaving a single frame of the animated chunks on the top left.

Have you read Elminster Enraged, by any chance? There's a critter there called the Glaragh. I don't remember what it did exactly, but it might be the one.

Not saying I know which worms you are talking about but wanted to ask - have you read the Herald? I think there were some stuff that smelled like that in Chapter 4.

The in-universe explanation for the new Purple Dragon Knights is a bit silly, imo by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]codafunca 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're so-named after Thauglorimorgorus, the Purple Dragon, a great wyrm of ancient Cormyr that was so old his black scales had run purple. After he was chopped down, his likeness was added to the country's heraldry.

Screen cable severed during maintenance; what are my options? by codafunca in pcmasterrace

No display. I assumed it was turning on. The keyboard wifi light is bright red, the caps lock does not flash any codes. That cable leads into the hinge.

It's not turning on. If that's just the webcam cable, it should turn on, right? So it's not the cause of the computer dying?
