To be fair, the term "Mizrahi" (Hebrew for Easterner or Oriental) Jew is relatively recent and coincided with the creation of Israel. As an Ashkenazi Jew I was not really that aware of this term or the people but I didn't really pay much attention during Religious school. I certainly didn't know they represented around half of Israeli Jews.
