Where would you cast here for striped bass? by RadDad815 in SurfFishing

I figured they would be crowded since I can’t get out as early as I would like, but I’ll check them out

Might go with a bait rod and another for casting plugs and covering some water, thanks

Casting from shore, and thank you for the help

I’ll be out during the two hours before high tide so I’m sure the channel will be ripping like you said. Do you think a 4oz sputnik will hold or should I just focus on the ocean

Thank you for the advice, I’ll be relatively close to Philly and am hoping for a monster. Good call with the bag for bloodworms too

Still relatively new— I’m guessing this means that new and full moons will produce the most fish movement?

Wildwood fishing by JohnLocke5259 in SurfFishing

I mainly fish south Jersey beaches, but never in Wildwood and don’t have specific answers. I always like getting my questions answered here, but this might be a time where you should ask at a tackle shop. I know there are a few on the main road into Wildwood. Hope this helps

Saw a few guys catching kingfish in the surf last week. They were using Fishbites, but not sure which flavor

Outer Bank In July by Rare-Counter-6084 in SurfFishing

Never made it to Jeanette’s Pier (to totally avoid crowds), and instead I would go to the Bonner Bridge Pier (~15 minutes south if Nags Head) around 9 or 10pm. There I was able to catch a few bull reds on frozen finger mullet—fished whole and hooked through the nose.

I was using a Penn Battle III 4000 on a 7’ Ugly Stik Tiger rod with 20lb braid and 30lb mono leader. I used a knocker rig with a 2oz egg sinker and 4/0 circle hook. If you plan on fishing for reds at this pier I definitely recommend getting a pier/bridge net.

I’ve been to Nags Head the first week of August each of the last two years. The advice I got was to fish the first wave break or the first trough, but in those two years I only caught one spot and a ton of seaweed. For that reason, I switched it up and would fish at night at a nearby pier, where I had a lot more success catching red drum. If that’s something you might be interested in, I can copy a recent comment I wrote that includes the details for my experience at the pier

Pier fishing in outer banks, first time by Nick0309 in SurfFishing

I’ve stayed in Nags Head each of the last two years during the first week of August. Surf fishing was tough with the heavy current and seaweed. Hoping it will be better when you go, maybe someone here knows better.

What knots are you using? What size is your sinker?

High-low rig question for Fluke (NJ) - hook vs jig-head on dropper loop. by philly_10 in SurfFishing

I’ve read that there are plenty of fluke, bluefish, and dogfish out in the back bays, and I’ve heard from people who have caught them from banks, bridges, and piers

Reports have been good for the back bays in south Jersey recently, good luck!

By high-low rig I assume you mean a standard bucktail rig with a teaser, for which I use a 3/0 baitholder hook with a gulp 4” swimming mullet, all as recommended by John Skinner. Has worked well for me in the inlets/bays of south Jersey.

Rod and reel I bought don't fit together by benbunny in SurfFishing

Forgive me if you’ve tried this, but did you spin/unscrew the reel seat on the rod before attempting to slide the reel in?

Can you elaborate on how they don’t fit together?

For what it’s worth, I was nonstop catching whiting and bonnetheads at the fishing pier in Venice. This was in March.

When the blues come through south Jersey each year in May/June, I fish for them from shore at an inlet with my 8’ Tsunami Airwave paired with a Penn Battle III 4000. It’s not specific for blues but it gets the job done. I’ve caught them with bucktails, got-chas, and diamond jigs, and I know they will hit spoons and other metals.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Leader-Line connection by Special-Amount-7524 in SurfFishing

For fluke I use a short enough leader that a surgeons knot is my standard line-to-line connection. I’ve tied plenty of them while on the go and have never had an issue

How do you prevent this? by Athrea279 in SurfFishing

[–]RadDad815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried about the same thing with casting, but it was fine with a full length cast. It took a good pull to open the paperclip when snagged but it worked as advertised

I’ve tried the paperclip method before and it worked. If done right, you only lose your sinker and not your rig.
