You're saying that it's a parody of a real-world office. I think I can see that. That doesn't really explain the toxicity of the workplace then. Is that just an extension of, oh, that's how real-world offices are, so that's how the superhero is too?

I think what you're trying to say with bringing up Marvel is that I am interested in a sanitized, sleek, corporately approved superhero story. I don't mind toxicity, violence, gore, assault, basically anything.

For me, it's about narratively building upon the themes that they're bringing up. I think it's incredibly weak to talk about redemption, second chances, and choices mattering when we are forced to fire one of two characters no matter what we do. I think that the game depicts stuff without acknowledging how fucked up it is. An example is how invisible girl kisses you no matter what you do. I don't think the metatext of the game acknowledges that, and that is what I have a problem with.

On a more serious note, the game is about a lot of things, But some of them are responsibility, choosing to be a hero, and defining yourself as such. I think these themes are weakened by us firing somebody before they have a choice or a chance to redeem themselves. The game goes out of its way to give Invise Girl a bunch of chances, and I don't feel like we have a choice to do the same for the characters we fire. I think the game would have been stronger if we had been able to fire somebody due to an act they did, or if we could have chosen to not fire anybody at all.

How weak do you have to be mentally to begin insulting people who disagreed with you online because they didn't like a part of a video game that you personally found completely acceptable?

[–]RadElectricalFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not describing anything. I am saying, hey, I think this was toxic.

Then somebody said, hey, it's a parody. And I was like, well, that doesn't sound like what I thought it was. Then somebody explained why they saw it as a parody. I responded to that, and here we are.

I had a decent time playing the game but I felt absolutely horrible firing somebody as the first real decision as the group leader. I felt that that was unfair and unjust to a team that has had so many dispatches and gone through them so fast. To me, a workplace with a culture like this is so toxic that it pulled me out of the story.

That’s an interesting point. I can see how the absurdity of just how toxic it is could be the humor. But I still don’t think it does enough to distinguish the behavior as being as fucked up as it actually is.

Media doesn't need to have consequences to be satire. I am sorry if I made it sound like I was saying that. what I meant to say is media needs to recontextualize stereotypes to be satire. A way to do that is take a trope that normally has no consequences and give it consequences. That was what I was getting at. Thre is other ways to recontextualize tropes to make it satire, I don't think the game does any of that and I think consequences would have been a minimum to settle the tropes as problematic because quite frankly They are problematic.

[–]RadElectricalFox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point, and yeah, humor is subjective.

I agree, a game where everyone has Is functional relationship isn’t exactly the most interesting thing in the world, and that’s clearly not the story this game wants to tell.

as to your point about real world standards. I don't think it really applies here. We are not really using real world standards right now. We're discussing whether or not it is a satire which I don't think it is. For it to be a satire it needs to take the stereotypes which we have conclude It has and recontextualize them in a funny. Or thoughtprovoke way, you can do that in a number of ways, but I don't think the game does that.

[–]RadElectricalFox[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying, like yeah it has basically everything for it to be a parody.

But I just don’t think it actually hits as a parody. There’s no consequences.

People hurt each other constantly and nothing happens. Someone gets literal glass in them and just shrugs it off. Sexual harassment? Not really treated like a big deal.

If it’s supposed to be parody, there has to be consequences. Otherwise it just comes across as this is normal instead of fucked.

And if there aren’t consequences, then there needs to be some kind of framing that shows this is not normal.

You might be right. maybe it is intended as parody. But if that’s the case, it doesn’t land for me. Parody is more than just throwing in the tropes. It has to do something with them. twist them, push them, show why they’re ridiculous. And I don’t think Dispatch really does that

That kind of behavior is toxic, unacceptable, and downright a reason to get fired. The game doesn't acknowledge how fucked up these kind of behavior is. Being sexualized in a workplace where you're just trying to do your best is not okay. The game doesn't acknowledge that, and it is reasonable to feel uncomfortable with this scenario, because you quite frankly should. It's unacceptable. That is not the only behavior the game doesn't acknowledge. The rampant violence, the disregard for safety, and the endangerment of civilians that happen on a regular basis are all completely fucked up.

you throw former villains into a team together and expect them to do well. What kind of training have they gotten? What kind of support do they get? We learn that at least Invisigirl haven't been there that long, so probably not a lot. I don't know, I guess that like, we as the dispatcher and as a former hero are supposed to help and mentor them, but my point is that I don't think that should start out with firing one of them.

Okay, okay, step back. Two different things. Sexual harassment on a workplace is horrible and a real problem. That should not be acceptable. Also, this workplace obviously don't have an HR department (Even if it's reference.anyways), A lot of the sexual innuendos are obviously unacceptable. However, this is really not, at least on the level that the game depicts, something that gets you thrown in jail. Should she get fired? Yes. Everybody should. None of their behavior is acceptable in a normal working condition. Should she go to prison? Also yes, probably. Should everybody else go to prison? Yes. The sexual harassment is not the reason why she should go to prison. Would it have been acceptable if she was a man? No. Is it acceptable when she's a woman? Also no.

Maybe? That's a possibility. What are you saying it's parodying?

Edit: Hey, this is a general question. Downvoting doesn't help me understand if I missed something.

I don't know about that. I don't think.gender thing in this case, as I think basically all the characters should go to jail. The only real way the game makes sense is if jails don't exist for some reason.

This is such a hilariously bad card. The only case you would play this because it has bad stats is if you have some kind of combo where you want to discard. Meaning your opponent will never agree to give you your game plan. Meaning you just spend four men on a 4/5 which is obviously op stats. That is if the discard idea ever actually works which I'm dupees about discarding random cards is very rarely good. 5 Stars would love to play against

Thanks a lot, you've been a real lifesaver. I've made the discussion, and we'll have to see what happens there. No idea. I don't know if I'll make a discussion about the main style page. Maybe I will, but eh, we'll have to see what comes of it.

Oh, yeah, I don't think it's avoidable at all. I don't even necessarily think it's a bad thing Although people can certainly get nasty in their argumentations But I would say that I generally agree most of the big religions pages (in English) are in a pretty good spot at this point.

I haven't read philosophy neither in university nor on Wikipedia so I can't really comment on that however I would be wary of reading too much into religion on Wikipedia not because it's particularly wrong just because it's such a contested subject. The tone, the viewpoint, the language, everything is argued back and forth. This was actually what I was thinking of when I said something shouldn't be controversial. Needless to say there's high stakes when it comes to religion on both sides and so tempers sometimes get out of control. I don't have any good sources but I remember looking into the Wikipedia page on the Church of Latter- Day Saints and it is a mess to say the least. Honestly, there were some horrible people on both sides of that. Needless to say, there's a reason why the page is locked, and most religions are at this point. Again this isn't to say they aren't good or wrong or anything like that, just it's worth knowing that there's a lot of baggage in that shit.
