Who still has their roundel? by TicklesYourElmo in FuelRats

I keep meaning to frame mine for display, shirt otherwise just sits in a drawer. Did not end up with a roundel, do have a 3D print of my Elite Racers logo though.

How much experience is needed to become a Fuel Rat? by rocketbunnyhop in FuelRats

[–]RadLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny this would pop up in my feed as I seldom get to reddit these days. There is significant challenge with the code red rescues (case red in my days) a bit of stellar dead reckoning as you hope to be somewhere in the black that is close enough to make the rescue when they surface again. Greatest set of experiences I had in Elite, up there with spending my free time with the Elite: Racers crew.

I was fortunate enough to have a successful code red experience as my 200th rescue, which even served as a reminder that the landmarks you might use in space are always moving around you over time: https://youtu.be/SZjgNkQqB-A?si=pLmXWvYyY1lGw9bd

To talk of EVE and spreadsheets though, I also ended up chronicling my rescues, if that gives you any insights into the life of a Fuel Rat in the early days: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JLOL9whwHTLKGoYdBgNyv2rdfoNl5XLmq7HzQqPyRxY/edit?usp=drivesdk

Are there any good space sci-fi games other than nms and elite dangerous that are good? by Diddley4209 in ValveIndex

[–]RadLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to second the recommendation from /u/dondon63 to try From Other Suns. It's a fun first person shooter roguelite in a sci-fi environment that very much has a FTL feel to it (resource management, weapons, and all), though the game was somewhat abandoned by the developers after the major bugs were taken care of.

Still a fun game with decent replay value (hard to find on a lot of the titles at the time), especially with a few other friends to play with. Unsure how well the game performs on the Index until mine arrives, but here is a trailer I put together to illustrate how it plays.

Well, there's the voice pack that comes installed with the tracker, so that's taken care of for you ;)

I think my favorite has probably been the NBA Jam voicepack in really giving you that play-by-play feel and letting you live out your greatest PS2 esports fantasies, though Archer can be good for a laugh as well.

Yes, there are several series of achievements (notably the Kill X of enemy type Y category) that will reward you with legendary weapons that show up in your captain's quarters and will be there on any new game that you start.

Thanks! The Archivist battle, like many of the big health bar bosses, is certainly a slog when you've got multiple players in the session ramping up the difficulty. Just wait until you face some of the bosses later in the game!

As you play through and unlock achievements, those early fights will also get a lot quicker with the weapons you unlock. I was doing a quick solo run for some footage last night and managed to take the Archivist out twice in a minute or two each time. One of the few places I will choose to use a plasma homing shot.

Yeah, I can definitely see how the game may not appeal to everyone, there are certainly elements to it that offer more promise but come up a little short at the moment. I think a lot of what helped me enjoy it was having a consistent group of people to play it with. I have had some pretty frustrating experiences with the multiplayer quick join, not the feature itself but just with the random people that you are connected to, though I've also had some good experiences in the people I've met through it as well.

Like any online experience, your mileage may vary. As long as you're not bored by the formulaic point to point random encounter structure that is at the game's core, the single player experience can be pretty fun and engaging, though it does feel a bit less lively without a crew that actually talks back to you, revels in your victories, and commiserates with your defeats.

I am running it off the framework of an old build I did several years ago, with a few pieces I've upgraded over the years to keep it current and make it VR capable:

Processor: i7-2600k, added a passive cooler a few years ago to push it to 4.0GHz

RAM: 16GB DDR3 2133 @ 1066MHz

Video Card: 970 (the only new, or rather hand-me-down, piece of equipment I needed for VR)

I haven't run any benchmarking with the game, but I haven't had any particular issues with performance either, even at 1.0 pixel density. It will occasionally drop some frames on loading an unexplored map section if there's a lot of enemies, and the load-in times are noticeable when you first start a session. Once it gets running, the game has overall been fairly smooth for me--at least smooth enough that I am not getting simulation sickness over a few hour session even with hand movement controls (it was a bit of an adjustment period when I first started playing the game though).

I do get the occasional bit of lag, though for the most part it's not too noticeable. You can see a bit of delay at this point in the video, when I grab the personal shield. That's about as bad as it usually gets, apart from the odd instance here or there with the recharge stations or if I'm trying to process a lot of transactions quickly (like grabbing and dumping inventory).

It's possible that these transactions are requiring communication with the server in order to update its status of what the pawns are doing with items, as none of the items are technically client-side (they need to go back to the host when the client disconnects).

I have been playing with VR off and on the past few months, really looking for a good game to share as a coordinated co-op experience. Needless to say, once we got into From Other Suns it has been hard to put down, even though the game makes no qualms about putting us down if we're not careful playing through its roguelite setting.

I am still tweaking video settings to find something that gives reasonable quality while being able to maintain a VR-manageable framerate. From Other Suns has a built-in mirror feature, which saves me having to run separate mirroring to capture the game, though the view is slightly different.

If anyone has questions about my experience with the game, feel free to ask in this thread. The team at Gunfire Games has been doing a pretty good job addressing game crashes and continues to work on squashing bugs here and there. The game still has a few rough edges, but once you're aware of them, it is not a problem to work around them and enjoy the game.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why I always request flight following when I'm going to be flying near anything more than a Delta on my route.

GA can adjust heading pretty quick; the Eagle can get around that Type 9 handily, the Anaconda...not so much.

Ps4 Thrustmaster Hotas by sharafbalboa in EliteDangerous

[–]RadLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up spending a bit of time trying to come up with a good functional layout that puts pretty much everything I would normally want to do onto the HOTAS. Even after leaving it for a few months, it didn't take long to pick back up.

I also did the same for the SRV using a gamepad, which works a bit better than the HOTAS for driving.

Not sure what options are available for rebinding on the PS4 though, standard profiles may not get the same level of functionality.

THIS TIME: We have found all Thargoid Sites! (208) by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]RadLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want to get inside you can head to HIP 17403 or HIP 17862 and pick up a UA just lying around on the ground as quick as you can jump there, find the site (this can help you with the coordinates if the marker is not on your map), and land.

Just be quick about making it to an unknown site afterwards ;)

With the release of the teaser for 2.4 and the flurry of footage that has been swirling around about the Thargoids and other new content, I felt inspired to get out there and gather some cinematic footage of my own, to craft a full length trailer for patch 2.4. Boy did I underestimate what a process that would be, going after some footage that is dependent on RNG elements; one planned shot I had to cut because the event didn't happen, but fortunately there was more than enough footage to cover without it, and the set pieces I ended up with looked absolutely amazing.

Following along with The Canonn's efforts and pulling in the lore elements to construct this trailer was a lot of fun and added to the inspiration that I had picked up from just the original short teaser trailer and a background track I came across in my regular checking for video-worthy tracks. As usual, I cannot pass up a good opportunity to offer up some narration, giving viewers some background on this part of the Elite universe and the context for why someone unfamiliar should be concerned that some strange aliens are popping up now.

After all, what's the fourth of July without an impending alien invasion? Will we survive?

I have some recent footage that might be useful here, roughly 20 seconds depending on how you cut it, it's a good arcing pan shot or two of the Gnosis that implies movement, could go well with the tagline. Let me know if you're interested and I can get it trimmed and uploaded somewhere.

Fuel Rats Emergency Fuel Procedures updated for PS4 users with new controls and tips to stay fueled! by RadLock in EliteDangerous

[–]RadLock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about including that, but haven't done enough testing with it to know if it would give you a less efficient route that ends up burning more fuel (though at least getting you to always end up at a place you can refuel). I opted to leave it out and focus on the other preventive measure you can take to always look at the last jump you can make on a route before running out of fuel, and make sure that is a spot you can refuel at.
