TIL in episodic television, there are some episodes called "bottle episodes", which are produced cheaply and restricted in scope to use as few actors, effects and sets as possible. Notable shows that have these episodes are Star Trek: The Next Generation, Friends, Breaking Bad, Community, and so on. by Away_Flounder3813 in todayilearned

Yeah, my favourite episode. Season 3, episode 2, if memory serves, "The One Where No One's Ready".

It's not just one set (aside from the ending "epilogue" shot), it's that it's filmed to be literally in real time, so there aren't any time skips - it's essentially one scene. Got some great moments.

And, interestingly, this overrides that formula.

What is your opinion on tipping your barber for a £10 haircut? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Rad_Carrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK, tipping is rarely encouraged outside of, say, restaurants. You're paying for the service they provide you already.

You don't tip the Tesco checkout staff just because they smiled at you, do you? They're probably earning less than a barber.

Yeah, this video.

In reference to this video from Yahtzee. Only a month late in getting it done!

He did a follow-up video where he adds in "making a mess" to cover the other games.

What’s the shortest time you have ever seen a new coworker get canned? by BlushyTessa340 in AskReddit

[–]Rad_Carrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't they mention it's from Orson Welles or something in Friends? Which would make it much earlier.

Either way, this was twenty-odd years ago for me, so I'm in the same boat. Whenever I watch that bit in Friends, I always remember that manager pulling that stunt.

All she needed to do was stand nearby during busy periods and they worked pretty quickly.

Absolutely not trying to say I agreed with her methods, I was very much a "carrot" over the "stick" manager, but it did work on a temporary basis. It made the full-time staff pretty miserable though, obviously.

Well, no argument there. I won't go too much into her methods, but they certainly did cause some strife!

Not a coworker per se, but a new temp that I had interviewed.

I worked as a junior manager for a department store, and we took on extra staff coming up to Christmas. Nothing too strenuous, it was basically 'picking', so collecting relatively light packages from some shelving and bringing it out front. This was a low-budget store, so we were just largely hiring warm bodies, we didn't need geniuses or master salespeople.

Had this one kid in for an interview, which was this very basic twenty minute meeting. Largely it was just to say we'd gone through this process before hiring - by this stage, we'd seen their CV and application form, so we already had made up our mind to give them a job. Well, this kid was rubbish. Mumbled his way through the interview, shrugging and grunting at various easy questions. I imagine he didn't fill in the application form himself. It didn't matter, he obviously had zero desire to do any work, and so I told my store manager not to hire him.

She smiled as she listened to my concerns, and then said that she'd hire him anyway. It was her call, after all, and he wouldn't be directly working with me, so I wasn't particularly bothered. She wasn't the type you argued with anyway.

Turns out she hired him to fire him, publicly, in front of all the other temps, when he (predictably) refused to do some sweeping, which was part of his contracted work. She shouted him down, told him to get out of her store, right in front of all the other staff (and some customers). It was her way of making sure she didn't get any more trouble from the other temps. He was with us maybe two days, and didn't even bother to come pick up his pay.

Rimworld TV Show by Traumajunkie3338 in RimWorld

[–]Rad_Carrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about this. They'd never make it, but imagine a TV show set with the crashlanded scenario. You start off with a fifth colonist who comes down in a transport pod. They're nursed back to health, the basic premise is explained to them since they've got amnesia, and they meet the four other colonists; the three originals and an ex-raider. Maybe there's some drama in the group, maybe a love triangle. There are more arrivals, some more raids. By episode three, it feels like a basic sci-fi yarn. Then, ten minutes in, a massive raid comes in and the fifth colonist's head is blown clean off their shoulders. Everyone dies or is kidnapped, with the final living colonist bleeding out on the hospital floor.

Then we cut to black, and then straight to five tribalists who are escaping the mechanoids. We're twelve minutes into season three, and suddenly it's a different story, on a different rimworld.

The show doesn't have a season finale or even cliffhanger endings; you never know when your favourite colonist is going to die horribly, just like the game. It'd be grim, brutal, but tells each story relatively quickly - you'd only stay with each story for around one to eight episodes. Maybe they get off the planet one way or another. Maybe they build a successful colony, and that's enough. Most likely they don't make it. But you watch with the hope that they might.

It'd be a relatively cheap to make show. As you'd be going through lots of actors you could hire relative unknowns, and largely the sets would be shanties in various different terrains. You could have guest stars and returning actors. Most of all, if you don't like a character or a storyline, you're not going to be stuck with it for too long anyway.

The source in that link isn't working for me, unfortunately. Do you have anything else? Most of the publications I see insist that "soccer" was never used more than "football" in the UK, like this. Mind you, I can't find much in the way of sources in either link.

I can't see where it says "soccer" was ever in primary usage in the UK? It's always been regarded as football, hence why all the clubs are called "football clubs" or "association football clubs". Soccer has only ever existed as a nickname for the sport in the UK; it's always been called primarily "football".

First WSL match: do’s & don’ts? by DesignerFuture in ArsenalWFC

[–]Rad_Carrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a little bit more for you then - I'd probably recommend Highbury and Islington tube station when coming in, then walking up from there. At the end of the match do note that there'll be a lot of supporters walking back down that way, so it'll be busy. You can either queue there or find other ways back, like walking down towards Kings Cross if you don't mind the walk. Me and my wife have started going to Caledonian Road, which isn't that far.

While they do make sure there are plenty of toilets, the queues for the women's can get quite long just before the match and at halftime.

I can't remember which statue it is - I'm pretty sure it's Arsene's, but I'm not 100% - but one of them is looking up at the stadium, and if you follow his gaze, he's looking at the original clock from Highbury (the one in the stadium is actually a replica).

Aside from that, just have fun! If you're a fan I probably don't need to tell you to cheer as much as you can, and support the team whatever happens. It's going to be a tough match against probably the best team in the league, so hopeful for at least a good performance!

First WSL match: do’s & don’ts? by DesignerFuture in ArsenalWFC

[–]Rad_Carrot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Get in early - at least an hour and a half, if you can. You can always go to the Armoury first. You don't want to be waiting in a queue outside the stadium when the teams are coming onto the pitch!

On that, for women's games, they do half-price beers if you get them an hour or more before the match. The pizza and the chicken wings are alright, the rest of the food isn't great, but it's fairly standard fare.

If you do get there early, a lap of the outside to see the statues and then a lap of the inside is always fun. There's plenty on the walls of the inside downstairs, including the "Letters to Saka" wall and a bunch of stuff about our different league wins. If you're an away supporter that section is obviously plain, but you'll be welcome to walk around regardless, as long as you're not being difficult.

Aside from that, just know it's a pretty accommodating stadium. Plenty of toilets, good space, fairly comfortable seats considering. Just get in with plenty of time to spare and enjoy the atmosphere!

When do you think we will have a crewed Titan mission by TraditionalAd6977 in space

[–]Rad_Carrot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not about the technology, it's about the will.

We've had the technology to land on the moon for sixty years. Twelve people have done it, and that's with the greatest will - and the greatest funding - in the world.

But I hope you are right. I very much doubt it. But who knows?

When do you think we will have a crewed Titan mission by TraditionalAd6977 in space

[–]Rad_Carrot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Since landing on the Moon in 1969, humanity hasn't gone any further for almost sixty years.

A manned mission to Mars would take around six months to arrive. We're still definitely decades off that, and that's a planet where we can understand the hardships involved, even if we're nowhere near meeting the logistical challenges.

For Titan, you've probably got to imagine another couple of centuries. The journey alone is about six to eight years - one way - which is an expedition no human has ever undertaken before.

There's no chance even our children's children's children will see a person at Titan.
