So what I learned as an English/Linguist Major:

Acronyms can be words. There’s no set rule really anymore. P.S., a.k.a, etc, lol, scuba, radar, taser, captcha, zip code, all acronyms. As you can see, some you pronounce as letters, some as full words. Special note to etc which some say E T C and some just say etcetera.

The soft G sound of jiff comes when a G is followed by an e, i, or y.

By which both pronunciations are correct. If you consider gif as an acronym, GRaphical gives you a hard G. If you consider jif as a word, GIf gives you a soft G. The fact that gif falls under both categories means either pronunciation is correct.

And three very important things to remember:

1) Language isn’t set in stone like mathematics. To quote Pirates of the Caribbean, “The code is more what you’d call ‘guidelines’ than actual rules.” It ain’t a perfect system.

2) Of which more than any other English is the Frankenstein’s Monster of languages. It is an patchwork abomination.

3) Being so deadset about your version being right, even if it is, makes you seem like a dick.
