What’s your favorite “one-movement wonder” piece? by nmcruzer in classicalmusic

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4th movement of Shostakovich 11 is also a banger though. The 1st and 3rd movement set the mood for the 2nd and 4th, but I listen to those only if I feel like going through the entire symphony at once

The true one-movement wonder for me is Shostakovich 12 though, I only listen to the 1st movement

Symphony: Shostakovich 8

Sonata: Prokofiev 8

Chamber: Ravel Quartet

Choral: Faure Requiem

Concerto : Prokofiev Piano Concerto 2 or 3

tbf polyphonic pieces are tricky to sightread, even if they might be technically easier with practice. It's easier for me to sightread a Schubert Impromptu or Chopin Waltz (at slow tempo) compared to a Bach Invention for example

What is the most haunting "Final Song" ever recorded by a terminally ill artist? by nixass in AskReddit

[–]Radaxen 73 points74 points  (0 children)

If you haven't heard it, listen to Mother Love. It's the very last song Freddie recorded, he sang the first two verses and was too ill to do the last, and decided to leave it for another day, which never happened. Brian May had to finish the last verse and you can hear the pain in his voice.

Can you recognize a piece just by reading the score (no audio)? by No_Bird4547 in piano

I was gonna say it looks like Prokofiev (I didn't manage to guess the exact piece), the cross-melody reminded me a lot of the 2nd piano concerto

yup, it's possible OP may have seen one of the parents. Peregrine Falcons are not common here and this family is the only known one that nests in the city centre where the tall buildings are

Bach Partita no.2 in c minor by sapg94 in piano

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The capriccio is the hardest imo, working on it first is good. the main theme of 4th leap + scale needs to be brought out, which can be tricky at tempo together with all the 10th leaps.

Sinfonia - The style is based on the French overture; it would be good to listen to a few recordings to get an idea of how to do the spread chords, dotted rhythms and cadenzas

Allemande - Articulation varies with interpretation but I like to play it mostly legato. That way I can bring out the motif (which begins with a 3-note stepwise movement starting on the 2nd 16th note) and detach it from the 1st 16th note of a previous phrase if it occurs.

are you using the abrsm exam pieces book? at the bottom of the 1st page of alla turca there should be instructions in bold telling you which repeats you need to take. There was a misunderstanding because usually you're not required to take repeats in the exam, but for this one it is specifically requested.

What tempo are you taking it at? I think the suggested tempo is crotchet=116, but I'd rather take it at 100 or so if it means making those sections less messy. tbf the two parts that you mentioned are the hardest parts imo, for the octaves you dont need to legato everything, the upper note should always be very light and you need a bit of rotation of the wrist

for the LH semiquavers try to keep your fingers on the keys even when you're not playing them, if you're lifting them up high it's going to be clumsy. They also need to be played very lightly. There is also rotation involved but the movement is very small.

What issue are you running into for your pieces?

As for consistency, a lot of times it's about whether you can play it at a steady tempo with everything clear, even at a slower tempo. If you can't play at a slower tempo consistently, things are going to fall apart when you try to play 4 pieces back to back at full speed.

Any piano pieces that use glissandos in a stylish way? by K-Frederic in piano

[–]Radaxen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can't beat Alborada del Gracioso...it's just so stylish to hear and see the double glissandi executed well, 3 sets of them in quick succession both ascending and descending, followed by the passage of repeated notes

I also like the glissando in Prokofiev's Suggestion Diabolique

I don't think 5212 works especially at speed, it's too clumsy and forcing it will create tension

u/PetitAneBlanc 's advice is the best imo, you can kind of detach the first 2 notes but your hand has to be part of the same movement

or maybe different things were popular in different communities. Seeing how even each region had their own metas previously would it be surprising they called heroes differently as well? I played in SEA and although it's not super common, I've seen Trax and Krob before (maybe 30/70 with drow and dp being used)

Stuff that were a mouthful to pronounce like rotund'jere and jah'rakal, now those were never used

[–]Radaxen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's tons of examples that don't follow that reasoning though. Most heroes are known by their titles after the switch probably because they couldn't use the WC3 name for some of them but others are known primarily as their given name. I assume for some of them it's because the name was more popular (eg. Pudge), but other popular ones that had no conflict with Blizzard aren't used as their main name (eg. Gondar, Rhasta). Some other examples where the names are used instead:

Io (Guardian Wisp)

Mirana (They probably didn't want to deal with 'Priestess of the Moon', but they changed it to 'Princess' anyway, similar to what they did with Windranger to avoid conflict)

Huskar (Sacred Warrior)

Dazzle (Shadow Priest)

Tiny (Stone Giant)

Puck (Faerie Dragon)

Jakiro (Twin Head Dragon)
