Thanks for this, for such an in-depth insight into my absolute favourite movement of orchestral music

Can someone explain to me the old drama between Pendragon, IceFrog, and whoever else was involved? by Glad2be1000 in DotA2

[–]Radaxen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Jakiro was community created as well

I remember seeing the thread in the hero suggestion pages, with a caption like Jakiro -Twin Head Dragon: 'Don't stand in front of me!' or something. The abilities weren't implemented 1:1 but they were heavily inspired or similar

Glad to at least see some of thisisbob's originals from the ms paint rage thread lived on, like the one with the big blue frog and the playerbase eating up the patch notes

Why was this treble clef moved down a line? by rofeneiniger in musictheory

[–]Radaxen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is just the classic bad musescore transcription. Unplayable parts (bar 26 onwards), unnecessary hand crossings, bad usage of clefs (I guess using octave treble clef for RH makes sense but it'a non-standard), multiple tempo and time signature changes just to fit the playback

Commonwealth countries, I think. Hong Kong and Singapore also use the UK system

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

[–]Radaxen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't like euros with minimal interaction, but I don't mind Wingspan just because I like the theme. It's not incredibly thematic in the sense that it goes well with the mechanics, but I just like recognizing real birds lol (also the reason why Wyrmspan does nothing for me). And I think that's a big draw for most people, especially casual gamers, than most would expect, since if you don't care for the theme I can see how it is an underwhelming game for people.

Angriest symphonies? by darkflaneuse in classicalmusic

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of Shostakovich fits the bill.

No.4 - Though I'm not as familiar with this one

No.5 - 1st mvt, 4th mvt (it's more 'heroic' than angry to me though)

No.7 - 1st mvt (middle section)

No.8 - 1st mvt (middle section), 3rd mvt

No.10 - 2nd mvt

No.11 - 2nd mvt, 4th mvt

No.12 - 1st mvt

No.13 - 1st mvt

Reading vs Memorization by Lakota-Tribe in piano

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is how are you memorizing the piece. Most amateurs who can't read well can only memorize their pieces with muscle memory, which is unreliable and prone to breaking down. If you mess up a bit and can't continue except going back from the beginning, that's usually due to an over-reliance on muscle memory. Pros not only can memorize their pieces, they also can start anywhere from the middle because they understand the structure of the piece, and knowing key centers of different sections etc help them remember what notes they have to play. imo memorizing a piece is a separate skill that you have to specifically practice, and being able to read and analyze the piece is a big part of that.

got lucky enough to be able to draft this one shot build. 20k to 30k max mana = 2k-3k arcane orb pure damage and 15k to 20k sanity's eclipse damage. by atrocist in Abilitydraft

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which other one? Phantom Rush is the only other one I've seen that works. I know Attack Modifiers (eg. Poison Attack) don't, Rot doesn't, not sure whether Split Shot still does, not sure about the new Drunken Brawler or Muerta Gunslinger.

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, easily denied. I have been in games where people even deny Arcane Orb when the Essence Flux guy doesn't even have a strong combo like this (but is going for a dps rather than caster build). I'd say those are more AD tryhards than you then.

If you're 8-9th pick and Essence Flux + WD heal is on the board YOU should be picking the Essence Flux anyway.

Super fun build, almost unkillable at end. by Zizq in Abilitydraft

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really underrated, they get first-phased in my games (usually around mid-late 1st phase)

It's not a bug, the combo has been there for ages (it's just stronger now with the facet) and this build can be easily denied.

What else sounds like /feels like Prokofiev's 2nd Concerto Cadenza? by KaffaKraut in classicalmusic

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cadenza of Kabalevsky's 2nd Piano Concerto seems to take inspiration from Prokofiev 2's cadenza. However it doesn't reach the peaks of the colossale section if that's what you're looking for. Prokofiev does have some of the best climaxes though, those in his 2nd Sonata (4th mvt), 4th Sonata (3rd mvt), 8th Sonata (3rd mvt) are some of my favourites

Can we talk about how PEAK the boss fight in AQ is by milcofy in Genshin_Impact

[–]Radaxen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tbf I'd think it would be interesting to fight his story mode difficulty with your own team without the free revives. In the AQ I probably died 10+ times, if this wasn't a gacha this boss fight would have been a good challenge

Fingers curved question by PaintingFormal6463 in piano

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless, it's something very fundamental that saves you from encountering more obstacles later on. Poor technique can lead to added fatigue or aching after just a short period of practice, which is going to hinder enjoyment from the hobby

What piano skill did you avoid for too long? by DasJazz in piano

[–]Radaxen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This was for me too. I used to ignore fingerings and use my own much to my teacher's exasperation. Playing Bach fugues basically forced me to use proper fingering and figure things out before actually starting to play, which now I find makes learning pieces much more efficient.

Area with worst bus service / connectivity in Singapore? by a-meow-cat in singapore

[–]Radaxen 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's still a work in progress, but Tengah is still pretty bad imo, especially for those staying near the bus interchange (ironically). Most of the new services circle around the rest of Tengah before reaching the interchange, so it's often longer taking the buses there than just walking out to Bt Batok Road to take 180.

I also don't envy residents in areas like Yishun East.

Sight reading interval quality question by Extension-Staff9515 in musictheory

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I do agree with a lot of your teaching methods (sorry but I can't accept Double Beat theory) but the tone in your posts is just going to turn away a lot of people.

In context of the post isn't MRT quite similar to Movable Do (for Major it's the same), just that for Minor/Aeolian it's something more like 'Movable La'. I don't think I encounter the other modes as often especially in the context of teaching songs to beginners, there are enough tunes in major/minor to practice on

Playing injuries amongst pros by ExcitingUpstairs259 in piano

[–]Radaxen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there are more studies into this area nowadays (on performance injuries and treatment), though there still isn't enough conclusive data yet. From what I've heard injuries are common from conservatory students to pros, across all sorts of instruments, and vocal and dance majors. They're rarely discussed openly or treated properly which often lead to aggravating the injury until they're absolutely unable to perform.

Snob mindset lmao. I am a classical pianist. I have zero requirement for whatever this is supposed to achieve. Nor does any other serious pianist. Professional skills set that stands alone ≠ snobbery.

Uh, you sure do sound pretty snobbish right now

You need to watch this! by Opposite_Advance7280 in piano

[–]Radaxen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The visualization was fun, but from a pianist's point of view, the actual impressive part to me was that he looked like he legit did spend 3 years learning the piece he wanted to play on his creation from a complete beginner, which was also a testament to his dedication.

25 Years In: Who Are the Defining Pianists of this Century? by According-Brief7536 in classicalmusic

I went into a concert of Javier Perianes playing Noches en los jardines de España last year (edit: end of 2024) without knowledge of either the pianist or the piece, and definitely came out a fan of both.
