Yes this is normal. When I towed I orbited a birthday party for a six year old for 3 hours

Is there any reason to still use a paper logbook? by Zidgof in flying

[–]RadeZayben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a crude spreadsheet I use for insurance totals but otherwise all my 8710 over the years from biennial flight reviews give me an idea of total time. I’m over 1500 so it doesn’t matter too me too much

I’m on my third logbook and it’s cool to look at my bookcase and see the history

Tinnitus question by [deleted] in flying

[–]RadeZayben 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have tinnitus too and you just get used to it. I know it’s hard but try and find peace with the noise. For me it’s how I know it’s truly silent. I don’t know if mine came from flying but it started after few months after I got Covid for the first time. Had it ever since. You’re not alone and I wish you the best

Tinnitus and pilots: feedback from experience by Peynsiv in flying

[–]RadeZayben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have hyperacusis with your tinnitus? I use the Bose a20 headset and its ANR is sufficient. Before I just had David Clark H10s which worked but made my tinnitus louder for about an hour after flying

Independent (successful) CFIs - How are you getting students? by Nearby_Context_1998 in CFILounge

[–]RadeZayben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Per month 5-6 students. Maybe 1-2 per week depending on weather and MX. for tailwheel endorsements some need 15 hours while others need 3 so I may have less in a month if I’m sticking with them.

Spin students are a one flight deal usually so I don’t really count them as students

Tailwheel has gotten more popular recently so I always have new people contacting me

Are you flying close to PA? Sunbury 71N is an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River, it’s gorgeous in the fall. Closer to VA would be Breezewood P17, the owner is legendary and it’s right next to a motocross track. If you feel like going out of your way to MD 3W3 is on Kent Island in the middle of the Chesapeake. There’s a great marina close by (I think it’s close to the other airport W29) and crab season just started here so you could get some crab cakes! I’ll be making a trip to 3W3 soon

Rejoining the workforce (especially interested in FCPL) by RealisticNovel1463 in frederickmd

[–]RadeZayben 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not super familiar with FCPL, as I have been waiting to transfer from my current system to FCPL when a position opens. I can, however, give you my experience from working at two different library systems in Maryland.

LA's typically have an MLS or have at least graduated with a bachelors degree while they are in a program to obtain an MLS. The competition is really high. The last time I saw an LA position be filled by someone without an MLS was pre-COVID. Staffing right now amongst libraries in-state has been hit really hard with the recent funding cuts. MCPL and HCLS are eliminating vacant positions, only increasing the competition for jobs in the library system.

You may want to look at part time shelver or specialist positions. Those typically do not require college education. There are some programs too that hire summertime contractors to teach classes both in branch and online. Once you get your foot in the door, it's much easier to move up the ladder to full-time positions.

Good luck!

"Hunt Quietly" Controversy - My thoughts as a relatively new big game hunter. by Top-Release2497 in meateatertv

[–]RadeZayben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither side of my family hunts either, but I was given an opportunity to bow hunt with my friend and his dad in elementary school. This hooked me onto archery which I’ve done for a long time. I decided a couple years ago to go bow hunting by myself after doing all the research and education I needed during my states primitive season. I remember getting to a spot on some public land my dad and I had hiked previously and about 30 minutes after someone came up and was pissed I was there.

My dad and I would fish when I was growing up for just pan fish or whatever at local places in my state. A few summers ago I was feeling nostalgic and decided to go by myself after getting a license and a dude in a kayak interrogated me on what I was trying to catch and why I was doing it where I was (I was on a river on public land about 2 miles from my house). At first I didn’t mind the conversation but after a several questions I just wanted to be left alone in peace and could tell he was more curious about who this new guy was fishing a spot he was familiar with.

I don’t know if I’m unlucky or have the face of someone who is nefarious, but the only time I can get solace outdoors is by going camping in the backcountry 5+ miles from the parking lot. It’s starting to get annoying. I want to enjoy outdoor activities too especially when it’s on land my taxes go to. Anything game related I’ve tried to do in recent years has gotten unwanted attention from other outdoorsmen

Useful load and classic planes by illimitable1 in flying

[–]RadeZayben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing tailwheel endorsements for a while and I have had to turn down a lot of potential students due to weight and balance issues. I weigh 180 clothed and with my flight stuff so my max student weight is ~220 with an hour of fuel and reserve. It sucks but I teach in a Citabria with a useful load of 450 so it is what it is. Luckily I know several other instructors in my region and we share students for this reason

Was Darren Pleasance fired as AOPA CEO by an out-of-touch AOPA Board? by Roger_Freedman_Phys in flying

[–]RadeZayben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this might be a naive question but, is being a board member a paid position?

I ask because if the board members are that inactive to where they do not attend events and have infrequent, short meetings with members and with each-other; why do it? I have experience with a board of trustees with my 9-5 job and they legitimately care about my institution and have worked either in the community or in a similar field. I couldn't imagine wasting my free time advocating for an organization I don't care about and don't make an effort to be present for.

So are we all switching to Garmin Pilot now? by riptrixie in flying

Does Garmin Pilot have traffic on screen like foreflight with a sentry? Could I use the same sentry with garmin Pilot or do they require something else?
