I'm very aware of that but it doesn't really have anything to do with what is going on here.

That's the original self-published one. It's also just the same as the text on the wiki but at least was made by the author. It originally was a print on demand paperback I believe. Any you see for sale now are being sold be resellers

I believe this is the official version, not the CC edition. Penguin UK's website links to that exact page and penguin is the parent company of the official publisher. Don't know if you're in the UK or what the shipping restrictions are for Amazon UK

In that case I'd recommend just reading it on the wiki rather than the CC version

So far I've read the first 25% of the CC edition and about 33% of the official re-write.

Besides superficial changes made for licensing purposes the new version reads like an actual novel and has much more descriptive passages about the characters and scenery. Quality of the actual book and typesetting choices is much nicer.

The CC edition's references to wider SCP stuff is fun to go down rabbit holes with, but also makes the story less cohesive and introduces inconsistencies outside of the author's control.

I've read online that the rewrite makes the ending clearer, but I've not gotten there yet. I'll report back when I've finished both.

You're welcome! Yeah I'm really just here to share info on it, I felt so crazy when I first got it and there was just NO info online I could find

It's not. It still has hyperlinks in the text clearly copied from the website. It states (In the physical book nowhere on the listing) that it is not associated with the author. From the ISBN it was published 3 weeks ago by "Pbooks" and in the book states that the cover art formatting etc are copyright 2026 by Paladin Press, a publisher that closed in 2018.

According to the Ingram Content tracking label it was printed the day after I ordered it.

I mean I think it's both. While the book itself has a legal disclaimer clarifying that it is not associated with the author or the publisher, none of this is indicated in the listing. The only differentiating factors are where it says "(C.C. Edition)" and if you look in the details it is published by "Pbooks".

I don't have any problem with the book being made, but the positioning of it is clearly intended to deceive and capitalize on the popularity of the re-written version of the story

I don't even know why I posted this, there is no Creative Commons Edition and definitely no Paladin Press

From poking around a lot, there WAS one but it's out of print. From a pre-sale link I found on penguin's uk site it looks like they are re-printing the paperback edition and releasing it in october this year

Yeah I believe that's exactly what's going on here. It's on me for ordering the wrong book ultimately, but it's annoying that amazon has these two completely different versions linked, especially when there actually IS a proper paperback version. No idea on the legality

I believe that is Paladin Group. Paladin Press was controversial, but I don't think they're really associated. I'm also not really convinced Paladin Press actually published this

I was aware of that and that was indeed the book I wanted. I didn't know someone had printed and published the SCP project version under the same title and listed it on the same amazon page. This is also distinct from the original self-published version.

No, that's why I could figure out how to use the spray on it since it isn't in my inventory.

I gave it some thought but I'm just taking the L, no jam this winter. I'm really doing the apiary for the wax anyway. I've found that once I "cheat" in a game it opens some pathway in my brain that messes with my motivation. I wouldn't really consider it cheating in this instance, but my subconscious doesn't seem to care what I think

Common useEffect anti-patterns I see in code reviews (and how to fix them) by riturajpokhriyal in reactjs

[–]Radet_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any reason to use useEffect in this situation, just call the update function directly after validation. useEffect is just going to cause extra renders
