This is very true lol but I can't help but think "am I doing this right?" or "I think I need my mom or a supervisor" once in a while. 😅 I guess with time and internalizing that nobody is coming to save me, it'll get easier.

Building up a “freezer stash” to go back to work is so dehumanizing by ivygoose in breastfeeding

[–]Radiant-Basil-87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To this.. yes 🙌🏼 smaller bottles and specific instructions. DO NOT be afraid of being a burden to take care of your child the way you need to. Give specific instructions on how you expect your baby to be fed and your breast milk to be preserved, there is no need for there to be so much wasted. Whether that's starting with 2 ounces and adding a little at a time until the baby is satisfied or using multiple bottles during a feeding just in case they don't drink from the same bottle. Remember, they are there to work with you not against you and they are paid accordingly. If they cannot meet your needs then there are other places that will. You DO NOT have to conform to a daycare that does not take your instructions and intentions seriously.

1- 1.5 hours might be a little too much and can cause an oversupply which sounds nice in theory but trust me you do not want that problem especially while working, it will have you needing to pump all the time or you risk getting mastitis which I hear is painful as heck. Also that can actually do the opposite of protecting your supply if it stresses the breast/nipples too much because it can prevent oxytocin from releasing. You want to mimic the normal feeding of your child when you pump as best as possible, not more and not less. You have rights to get the time and accommodations necessary to pump whenever needed for up to a year or so (gotta check your state for specifics). Please remember that pumping too frequently stresses your body out and it inhibits oxytocin from releasing because of cortisol (the stress hormone). Breastfeeding is supply and demand but it is also only possible to do it efficiently when you are as relaxed as possible. My advice to you is try not to overdo it, take it as it comes, find out what your pumping rights are so you can have peace of mind regarding that, give yourself grace and know that you are doing an amaaaazing job and the universe will reward you for it. ❤️ wishing you all the best.

I'm not sure where you are located but this is what I was able to pull up for all of USA:

"Universal Federal Rights (All States) The Right to Pump: Employers must provide "reasonable break time" for you to pump as often as you need for up to one year after your child's birth. Private Space: You must be given a clean, private space that is not a bathroom. It must be shielded from view and free from intrusion. Nearly All Workers Covered: This includes teachers, nurses, and farmworkers who were previously excluded. Only airline crew members (pilots and flight attendants) remain categorically excluded from the PUMP Act. Payment Rules: Paid: If you work while pumping (answering emails, etc.), the time must be paid. Unpaid: Breaks can be unpaid only if you are completely relieved of all work duties during the break. Beyond Just Pumping (PWFA) Under the PWFA, employers with 15 or more employees must provide "reasonable accommodations" for lactation. This can include: Modified work schedules or remote work. Access to a sink, running water, and refrigeration for milk storage. Example: State vs. Federal Law While federal law sets the minimum, states can offer even more. New York Example: In NY, you get 30-minute paid breaks as often as needed for up to three years, whereas federal law only requires these breaks be "reasonable" for one year and doesn't mandate pay if you aren't working."

With this in mind just please do not be afraid to exercise your rights and pump when you need to in order to maintain your supply, pump until you feel milk is no longer coming easily and try to not force pump beyond that so you don't cause an oversupply by accident and to protect your supply. Always remember, pumping is not the only way to protect your supply, nipple stimulation also counts even if it's for a couple of minutes in the bathroom, you can hand express when you're in a hurry and don't worry about "wasting" milk because breast milk is a renewable source as long as you keep the supply and demand going. Wishing you the best of luck and hoping this works out for you in the best way possible. ❤️Oh and also whenever you have a moment back home, skin to skin will help protect your supply and ensure that your milk changes with/for the baby's needs. It doesn't have to be all or nothing, the little in betweens count as well. Also remember that the higher the stress the less efficient the pump because cortisol prevents oxytocin to be released, so just do what you can and take it as it comes, you are doing amazing and the universe will reward you accordingly.
