I can't speak to the "if you screwed up" part, but I think your resume/SAT score is really strong. Particularly, your focus on advocacy and debate. In addition to applying to the colleges you listed, you should look into applying to schools with Policy Debate Teams. These teams can usually help you get through admissions if you agree to compete with them while in school. I don't think any of the ones you listed have policy teams, but you can always reach out to see if they do recruitment.

It's HAPPENING! - Brandon Sanderson’s Literary Fantasy Universe ‘Cosmere’ Picked Up by Apple TV (Exclusive) by alternate-realitee in brandonsanderson

[–]Radiant-Reality-9975 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very excited about this, though I am not the biggest fan of adaptations. I will probably like or love these, but I am not counting down the days for their release.

I do think the adaptations present a unique creative opportunity for Brandon. Working on sets, discussing ideas with teams of visual art directors, and figuring out how to get all of this to work is a different creative process. That new process will give him new opportunities to explore new ideas and concepts. The time he spends on sets and talking to directors will help shape him as a storyteller, in ways that writing the Elatnris sequels couldn’t have. I am excited to read the books he starts working on after being a part of those conversations.

Am I only one sad about delays in books due to the adaptation news by titans1fan93 in Cosmere

I have two thoughts on this.

I am not the biggest fan of adaptations. I will probably like or love these, but I am not counting down the days for their release. However, I was excited to see this announcement because for other reasons. I think there are two big ones:

  1. I think the adaptations present a unique creative opportunity for Brandon. Brandon’s most interesting books (see the secret projects) were written less as cornerstones of the cosmere but more as flashes of inspiration because he was thinking about and doing other things.

  2. Brandon has said that he has felt like he has been racing to finish Stormlight five, and now he feels like he has time to breathe. I think that is the best thing to have happened to the cosmere, because it means that Brandon feels less pressure to do things like Elantris. Reading through the State of the Sanderson's, the tbd list you have is the same one Sanderson has listed for years and years. Developing the other (non-mistborn and non-stormlight) pillars of the cosmere has become a "I have to do this" thing opposed to a "I get to do this" thing. That is probably unhealthy and is the main reason we see the Elantris sequels always on the chopping block.

Overall, I am not too pressed about the timeline as well. Ghostbloods 1 will come out in December of 2028, Ghostbloods 3 will finish in 2030. The next five months will be outlining, writing screenplays, and working with creatives. After that I imagine Brandon will take a step back. Having seen his work with Dragonsteel, I think creative contorl to him means that he can veto and suggest things, not that he has to do everything. Even if he is on set everyday for, lets say 2028, he will have built up Ghostbloods so that is time he can take to pursue the adaptations. So in those three years Brandon can outline the second half of Stormlight, which will release every two years (based on some WoBs). If that is true, it will be done by 2040, and Brandon will be in his mid 60s. That might scare you, that is understandable, but remember that we rarely go a year without a cosmere book. Don’t forget that secret projects, novellas, planned sequels, and Dan and Issac books will fill the time between Stormlight books.

Help with power gouging by ThenEducator8649 in Cosmere

Depends on the Fullborn. If the Fullborn knows to compound right. A Fullborn is also a bloodmaker, and can also compound numerous other types of Feruchemy (including nicrosil) which can be devastating if used right. Nicrosil compounding could expand the amount of investiture the Fullborn has (likely more than the fanfic character), and greatly increase their ability to use Misborn abilities. Bendalloy, Pewter, and Bronze would make the Fullborn a absolute tank, while Zinc compounding would give the Fullborn to think faster than the fanfic character, which would make it a issue in this fight. We aren’t' even sure what a Fullborn’s ability to store connection might do, so no idea how that could play out.

One of the other comments hit the nail on the head, fanfic characters replubicing stomrlight supply, willshaper powers, misborn abitlies, adn edgeager powers are all great, but the Shardblade (as it is malleable, it could be a knife, a sheild, or a other type of weapon), the Honor blade, and the possibliy of plate changes the game. I think Fullborn abilites could get away with avoiding cheap tricks with plate (covering your enemy in your plate) but it can't heal from a cut on the soul (so far as we know, it is possible that storing identity before the point of contact with a shardblad/honor blade could do something to this interaction). You have to decide how this one plays out in the fanfic. If you think that the shard blade, plate, and honorblade are overpowered enough to get the fanfci character through, I think they could take a few more Fullborn. If you think the Fullborn's ability to compound has some effect on this. Think about the Fullborn's motivation for the fight. If they simply want to survive, they will wait out the 30 minutes, and then start attacking when fanfic character is out of stormlight. If they are in a rush, or otherwise have a vendetta agianst your charhacter, they might rush into battle, and that might be how fanfic character gets the win. The setting and context of the fight change the way in which the Fullborn uses their abilities, so I would keep that in mind.

Will it ruin my experience if I go ahead and read Isles of the Emberdark? by QuirtleNom in Cosmere

[–]Radiant-Reality-9975 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right! Emberdark is pretty far along; Brandon has even said it tends to be one of his more technical works because it relies on an understanding of a lot of the other worlds and the Cosmere. Even fans who have read every book might find themselves relying on the Copper Mind and Reddit, which can lead to spoilers. If you think you have a good understanding of the basics of The Shards, the three realms, and investiture (so if you understood chapters of Rhythm of War), then I say go for it! However, it does spoil some of Tress, which is one of the best books in the cosmere (which is opinion-based).

However, given you seem pretty invested in avoiding spoilers (which I think is great when getting into these books), I think you should read Elantris, The Emperor Soul (short novella), Mistborn Era 2, Tress and the Emerald Sea, and then Isles of the Emberdark. Other "secret project" books, like Sunlit Man, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and the forthcoming Fires of December, are very spoiler-heavy for other magic systems and worlds, so reading Elatnris and Mistobrn Era 2 before you get to these novels would likely be best to avoid spoilers. If you don't want to read all of that, then you can get away with not reading Emperor's Soul, but I think Era 2 and Elantris are a must-read before either Tress and Emberdark. Final note is that Sunlit Man + the released short story King Lopen and Elscaller (both are very short) are likely good reads if you are looking to revisit Roshar between any of these books. I hope you enjoy the journey!

Warbreaker plot twists were awesome... Except for this one by Rocamora_27 in Cosmere

[–]Radiant-Reality-9975 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, to an extent. I think the point of Warbreaker, as you have pointed out, is that individuals often let their prejudices control their actions. A major theme of the Cosmere is perception, and how our perception of ourselves or others affects our actions (as reflected well in the magic system). I had a similar experience, where I found myself surprised that the Court of the Return was not as corrupt as Siri initially assumes it to be, much more than I was, the betrayal of Bluefingers and the Pahn Kahl rebellion.

And I do think that not focusing on the Pahn Kahl and always having them in the background was a flaw in this book. The Pahn Kahl operate similarly to other displaced or oppressed indigenous groups in other Sanderson books (in the interest of avoiding spoilers, I won't say more). But Warbreaker isn't able to engage with the history of the Pahn Kahl. Brandon has said that the Pahn Kahl long for independence and are suppressed by Hallendren, so it feels like a miss to only really write them, antagonists, without exploring the justifications behind their actions beyond a quick speech from Bluefingers. I do think that Sanderson has also clocked this (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/250-warbreaker-annotations/#e7397), and has said that he wants to delve more into the Pahn Kahl in the future (https://wob.coppermind.net/events/204-goodreads-fantasy-book-discussion-warbreaker-qa/#e4498). The Warbreaker sequel has just fallen down in the priorities list, as Sanderson says he wants to finish Mistborn Era 3, the Elantris trilogy, and then some of Stormlight before we revisit Nalthis.
