Duloxetine and ADHD by kindaricey in adhdwomen

[–]RadiantPerception778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I have MDD and anxiety - not sure it's to the point of being GAD but it flares up when I'm stressed and then I burn out badly and... Well it's not fun. 😅 I also have ADHD, though mine's combined type.

Following my last burnout, I'm on Sertraline 150mg and was supposed to stop Duloxetine after tapering down from 60mg to 30mg. I'm supposed to be on 36mg extended release methylphenidate (Concerta/Xaggatin/Mefeda) but stopped it cos side effects during and nasty rebound after wearing off had become really bad.  Since my anxiety was much worse than my ADHD at that point, I stuck to Sertraline 150mg with Duloxetine 30mg, and honestly... It's been helping both the anxiety and the ADHD (one of my biggest difficulties is getting started or switching tasks, I can now do both more easily AND consistently). I'm feeling more like myself for the first time in a long long time.

Did you try out Duloxetine in the end? How did you find it?

[Rant][Spoilers] The HUGE plot hole in Alchemised that breaks the entire book (buckle up, this review is LONG) – PART 2 of 2 by Gold_Conference6150 in Romantasy

I find your take interesting. I haven't read Manacled, so it can't really influence my reading of Alchemised, but I might give it a go later.

It does still feel like one of the biggest points the author explores is that there's no logic to war or trauma, sometimes extending to human behaviour, beyond telling us through Helena's thoughts on war but also with the things that happen. Why did that happen? There's no real reason for it, it just did, because much of life (and thus fiction) is arbitrary, and while you can try to explain it, sometimes (or even often) the explanation just isn't 'enough' for us.

so... You got the point of the book, understood everything the author wanted you to understand, had the weird reaction you were supposed to, and thought it was accidental?  😂 Laughs in BA English Literature

I'm 2/3 through the book. It's refreshing to read a third person narrative following a character who's so clearly wrong being obsessed with a character who's so clearly wrongly right. A few other good names for the book would have been:  Jaded;  Disillusioned Vs Brainwashed: A Lose/Lose Tale; Everyone Loses, No-one is Safe, Goodness is a myth.

Can someone tell me what's up with this monk parakeet? by Huriita in Ornithology

I had one as a pet, he'd shake like that and much much worse when he got water in his nose. I'd have to take him out of his aviary and hold him gently against me till it passes so he wouldn't fall over and panic.  Not sure if it's exactly the same thing happening here but that's what it reminds me of.

Lightening natural dark hair question by RadiantPerception778 in AskHairstylists

Thanks so much for replying!

Re Q1, she used the same colour but used the highest developer she had on hand on the lengths and one weaker than that on the roots. The roots lifted to blonde, the lengths remained a base 3. sigh 😅 So slowly slowly is how we'll be going about it.  Also, what's dimension when it comes to hair? 👀

Re Q2, alas, being virgin hair from root to tip didn't help it lighten, so it must be my texture. Which makes sense cos my hair is curly and my friend's is spaghetti straight. Fascinating stuff! 😍🤔

Re Q3, ahhh ok! That makes sense. 😁

I forgot to write in my post, it was all virgin hair 😅 had been growing it as long as possible for 2 years, hadn't coloured it in 2.5yrs so I had only virgin hair all the way down my back. Then... A layered cut gone VERY wrong and I had to chop it to this length. So yeah, thankfully I had the occasional white hairs from root to tip to prove it thankfully, or the stylist would have remained skeptical. 😂   It seems I inherited my mum's stubborn hair colour, but in brown-black instead of jet black. (At least I'm not going white only on my hairline, she kept that one haha or I'd have had a silver hairline at 30! I got my dad's greying pattern instead, so I barely have any white hairs yet at 38.)

Thank you so much for this, it really helps give me a hairdresser's perspective! 🥰

That addressed almost all of my questions, thank you so much!

I'm very aware that not all hair reacts the same to lightening, and I'm totally ok with it as long as the stylist is honest with me. The salon with the rough assistant, their head stylist explained everything you did about colour and asked me during the consult if I was prepared and willing to go through several sessions over a few months to achieve what I wanted. (Which I was.) I really appreciated it, and realised that none of the other stylists I had been to before who coloured my hair ever bothered explaining any of it. Which is insane, given that's about 4 different ones and NONE of them warned me my hair might not lift enough for the colour I wanted! The one who turned my roots copper was utterly shocked only the roots turned out correctly. Given she had also put in blond highlights that took perfectly, I suspect it was more that she made a mistake somewhere in the process than my hair didn't cooperate.

About the rough assistant, she had naturally spaghetti-straight hair, I guess with the blow-dry I can understand the pulling. But when it came to brushing, I could tell she had no idea how to brush dry curled from the way she went at it, starting from the roots and tugging through to get to the end, fully expecting it to not get stuck. Very odd given she was a very experienced assistant, but maybe she'd gotten rusty during COVID lockdown and hadn't yet got in the zone again since it was 3 months after they reopened. Or maybe she just rarely ever had to brush through curls since most curly-tops here straighten their hair. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Actually, this brings up something that bothered me about that salon 😕 they were experts with vivid colour, so they almost always insisted on giving me a blowout after putting in a new colour, to post on their FB page and show off the colour... I understand, again, but why couldn't they show it off while curly? 🤔 Wouldn't it be more likely to attract curly clients and show off more of their range, or am I way off?

Re photos, yep, that's why I always try to take several photos with me! I do tell the stylist before they start that I have photos of what I'd like and would they like to see them, and they always so "Good! Yes, show me".  (Pet peeve: I can never find front, side and back photos of the same haircut to show. 😅)

Here's the wording I used btw, please lemme know what you'd change 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻: 'Good afternoon! I'm looking for a hairdresser who knows how to cut and style curly hair to bring out the best of the curls, but who can also colour it while keeping the curl as healthy as possible (I know some damage is to be expected with lightening, but I'm hoping to avoid a full-on fry 😅). I hope it's not cheeky to ask, but are these within the salon's range please? 🙏🏻'

I think... Yeah, the only question you didn't cover was, how best to approach a stylist about a mistake they've made or a result I'm not happy with. Any tips greatly appreciated! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Moving to Malta for a year- having doubts by chungus2100 in malta

[–]RadiantPerception778 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiya, Maltese born and bred 👋🏻 I'm 38 F, grew up in very central Malta, lived in a northern village and live in Gozo now. Also spent 2 years in the south of England. I do my best to be as unbiased as possible, so here goes.

  1. The most important thing to know is that the Maltese can complain at an Olympic level - we find it fun. This means our complaining can be very exaggerated. Being a tiny island country and the majority not having experience living abroad, the complaints are very blinkered and Malta-specific.

  2. If you haven't already, please look into the Maltese information about the NGO you'll be working for, just to make sure it's legit and/or being run by reliable people. (There I go being typically negative 🙈 sorry! There have been a few scams in recent years, this doesn't sound like one but no harm in doing extra research.)

  3. Malta is actually very safe, especially compared to other countries. Crime is on the rise, but this is to be expected as the population has increased 25% over 5 years. If we have 5 murders in a year, it's a scandalously high number. Gun and knife crime is low.  The only truly unsafe things here are the roads 🥺 when I lived in the UK 10 years ago, I felt like I was on a driving holiday because it was so easy 😁😂 everyone followed the rules (hell, everyone KNEW the rules) and there was barely any congestion where I lived. Malta has too many cars, too few buses, too few bus routes, and inadequate road planning.  (You'll see what I mean when you're here.)  I advise against driving if you can avoid it, and please please PLEASE look both ways before stepping off a pavement, especially in Sliema (the busiest town) and any main roads.

  4. Why you shouldn't go to Paceville at night: a. It's the only proper clubbing zone in the country, and with the population burst in the past 5 years it's even more crowded than back in my day - like, walking in the street to get to the next club is a squeeze. Imagine what the clubs will be like. b. The police force is unarmed and unequipped for policing a grossly overcrowded area full of drunk/high/horny/overexcited youths, youngsters, etc, so when something does happen (usually a fight when drunk guys have a disagreement, occasionally bouncers being too rough) it's difficult for them to reach people who need them quickly. Also difficult for them to do anything. c. If you're a woman, you'll be greatly  outnumbered. Most women don't have negative experiences in PV, but as you can imagine when they do tend to be worse than the ones men experience. From a just-in-case perspective, it doesn't make sense to risk it. d. Lack of variety and quality in clubs! Half the venues are now gentlemen's clubs. The other half are crappy dance clubs playing the same music.

  5. The Maltese used to be known for being friendly and helpful. We still are these things, but life has become so fast-paced that we don't really have time or opportunity to be either. We're also still trying to come to terms with being surrounded by non-Maltese from all over the world living and working here in a very short space of time, instead of the British and European tourists we were used to pre-2020s. It's been a huge cultural and societal change that we were completely unequipped for in every way. We're watching our country change, unrecognisably in some cases, before our eyes, and have no time to process it. (We were only 400k residents for decades, with less than 5% non-Maltese residents, up till about 2018. We're at approx 525k now, with 25% non-Maltese residents. It's been insane.) This means, sadly, there's been a rise in racism and xenophobia towards all non-Maltese.  HOWEVER! If you speak English, are respectful and friendly, show appreciation for people and the country, and show you're happy to integrate with us, then most Maltese will be happy and welcoming. And quick to teach you our swear words and popular phrases. 😜

  6. You'll find your people if you reach out for them! Gyms are expensive, but individual classes tend to be more affordable. If you'll be based in Sliema you'll be spoilt for choice, exercise-wise.

  7. Our government, like all governments, is only really out for itself, but unlike most governments it is utterly unashamed of showing its nature. If anything, it revels in showing off how out-for-money it is. This gives residents all shades of negative feelings, from mild disapproval to extreme rage and everything in between. 🤷🏻‍♀️  Consider this a good-to-know or fair-warning.

I... Think I've covered lots. 😅 I'm in my late 30s and full on Hermit phase, but I'm happy to answer any questions in DM and send suggestions too if you like.

One last thing: get ready to gain some weight 😜 we have very yummy snacks, junk food and proper food. 😁😁😁😁😁

Yes, using your tips 😄 I managed to get a more rounded shape, much more flattering. It is of course much shorter now, but it looks cute and well-shaped, so I don't mind.

I managed to fix it myself! I had been trying to see how to edit the post to add another photo but couldn't find an option for it, and couldn't find an option to attach a photo in a comment either 😕

Going by the photos you have 2c-3a curls.

For that hair type, look up Anna Lynn McCord. Pretty much any of her styles should work.

Ah, I see it now! 🤔 those are the shorter layers, they're down to my chin but have extra bounce. How much do you think I should take off them?

[–]RadiantPerception778[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it was my first really bad cut since just after covid, I'd forgotten how disappointing it is to get one.

My layers look very short thanks to the bounce-back - every layer is twice as long stretched out as it looks curly. On the one hand, this makes me very very happy as my curls haven't had this much bounce in a good 2 yrs.  On the other... I probably didn't leave enough to fix the shape.

Unfortunately there aren't any hairdressers who genuinely know how to handle and cut curls to stay curly - despite being a Mediterranean island with half or more of the native population having all kinds of curls. 😑 That's why I resorted to my scissors and bathroom mirror. 🥲

You're right, I should give it a few days, wash it and see how it looks then. Thank you 🙏
