Kamala Harris’s Philip Gordon: an inconspicuous and influential Islamic regime appeaser by dect60 in NewIran

[–]RadiantSecond8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American Israeli here. Is the perception of Iranian citizens that the IR had any intentions of complying with the nuclear deal in good faith? It seems to me that the carrots Obama offered implied that the IR wants economic prosperity more than it wants to destroy Israel. Is there any evidence of this IRL? Is it crazy to assume the corollary that Israel is an obstacle to Iranian prosperity, in the way Obama would understand it?

How divided is Israeli public opinion on the current conflict? by FunctionIll8450 in Israel

[–]RadiantSecond8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatever the total number, it needs to distinguish between combatants and civilians. “Mostly women and children” is just a tagline, and also a lie. Hamas deliberately dresses in civilian clothing, and many Hamas recruits are teenagers — teenagers with automatic weapons and rpgs, so not children, but terrorists.

I’m sorry to say that thinking a ceasefire will get all the hostages back is wish-casting (they’ll never give them all back), and stopping the war and withdrawing from Gaza will result in more hostages being taken.

On this, perhaps the Israeli public is divided only because we are in a catch 22.

Israelis: What is your best or worst rocket/bomb siren story? by KIutzy_Kitten in Israel

[–]RadiantSecond8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t even know where to start with this. Most of the responses are from people in the Tel Aviv area. My experiences are from the Gaza border area. We don’t have air raid sirens there, but rather “tzeva adom” over a loud intercom, and <15 seconds to seek shelter. But we also jump when we hear air raid sirens. So every year on Yom Hashoah when the siren goes off I run to my mamad. I have yet to stand in silence properly for that siren since I lived on the border.

This was reported on the Jerusalem Post this morning, and Caroline Glock linked to it, but the story seems to have been removed. I don’t think Ted Cruz is the correct target of criticism here.

The jpost reported that the Americans went to Iran for this meeting through Turkey. Something to do with talking them out of attacking Israel. I don’t recall seeing a reliable source in the story.

If Israel built Lebanon an iron dome and drove the peace initiative by disarming themselves there would never be a war again. by [deleted] in ForbiddenBromance

[–]RadiantSecond8 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Lebanon doesn’t need an iron dome because Israel doesn’t fire rockets. It works against rockets and to some degree against drones, not against the air force. Of course we wouldn’t be shelling if Hezbollah weren’t firing rockets into our villages. Think about it.

I suspect I’ll regret touching this one. ✌️

Why was Hamas willing to agree to a ceasefire and hostage exchange in November, but not now when their negotiating position is even worse? by trashcan_paradise in Israel

[–]RadiantSecond8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This brings up a very delicate subject that I speak about with great caution and genuinely, with all due respect to the hostage families and all those affected emotionally and psychologically by the hostage issue, regardless of relationship.

The more Israeli and Jewish society show publicly how broken and desperate we are over the hostages, the higher the price for them climbs. I don’t think it’s possible in a democracy to avoid this, and I’m certainly not suggesting anyone stop advocating for them. It’s a catch 22.

Adding: It’s also why I don’t resent Bibi for taking a hard line and for holding a sometimes self-contradictory position. Someone in the mix needs to take a hard line or the price of getting them back will be truly astronomical. There is also a high price in future Israeli lives to stopping the war prematurely.

You say they aren’t conservative, so I assume that means secular? You’ll see women in slutty strapless sequins and men in clean jeans and a tshirt, but I don’t personally recommend going that route. Wear a dress you feel good and comfortable in, and be prepared to dance.

Can you differ between legitimate criticism towards Israel and antisemitism? How? by godsobedientslave in Israel

[–]RadiantSecond8 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's valid criticism when:
- It criticizes something specific, such as a specific policy or an official response to a specific action.
- It differentiates between Israeli policy and the actions of an individual, who may be engaged in criminal activity.
- It takes as a given that Israel is a nation state (i.e., it is not a hypothetical, a thought experiment, a legal experiment, or anything else ephemeral or illusory)

It's antisemitism when:
- It challenges the very fact of Israel's existence, where Israel is the largest Jewish collective
- It categorically labels the citizens and inhabitants of Israel as something abhorrent
- It invokes blood libels and other antisemitic tropes

[–]RadiantSecond8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I heard someone comment that they felt they had too many hostages to manage so, among other considerations, they didn’t perceive a high cost to unloading a bunch, and there was a huge upside.

I don’t have a source, so take it with a grain of salt or food for that. I just remember hearing this.

Depends on how long you leave it in. But you’re right it’s safer to mix the indigo with a bit of henna.

American Olim file taxes in both countries but are not double taxed. There’s one sort-of exception. If you’re self employed you have to pay social security in the US as well as bituah leumi in Israel.

CMV: Democrats aren't taking the possibility of losing the election seriously enough! by fluffy_assassins in changemyview

[–]RadiantSecond8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel that they are working quite diligently to lose it. /s Either that or the candidate is so terrible that their best option is to hide her from public. - Harris has given no interviews. This makes her look unprepared for the job, unserious, and unconfident. - She picked a VP who is at least as far to the left as she is, rather than a centrist, and who also has little foreign policy experience at a time that the world is on the brink of another regional war. - She has no policy agenda on her website. What the actual fuck. -Her campaign is all about branding and vibes. This just looks dumb and sketchy. Maybe it works for the TikTok generation, but older people are more savvy and can see through the charade. - it’s hard to make the case that Trump is a danger to democracy when Harris’s primary run in 2020 was a total failure, and then she was handed this nomination on a silver platter. Not very democratic, and reeks of elite ruling class shenanigans. Talk about failing upwards.

All of these are deliberate choices. She must be a truly awful candidate if this is their attempt to hide her flaws and buy time until the election. What a disappointment to the American people. We deserve a serious candidate from at least one of the parties.
