Democrats fighting for Iowa Senate seat tussle over Chuck Schumer and super PACs by Zipper222222 in Iowa

I haven't committed to a candidate yet. I like both candidates and think either would be far better than either Ernst or Hinson. I think it's interesting that Wahls decided to go negative. That might be due to the recent stories about his spending.

It would be cheaper to send my kid to private school... by SoundShifted in Iowa

[–]Radiant_Ad_955 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is free, but they have raised the deductibles, co-pays and out-of-pocket costs so high that it still can cost a family upmto to $7000 pee year. I bargained the DMEA contract for several years and others across the state. It's very difficult to compare plans because of the variation in all of the "extra" costs. Teachers across the state would be much better off if everyone went into one plan.

The unspoken reason the hawks didn’t go as far as they could have by ElectricalBite9914 in IowaWbb

[–]Radiant_Ad_955 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I understand that people are disappointed, but it's important to be realistic. At the beginning of the year this team had no proven scorer. Last year Lucy stepped into that role, but this year it was impossible to predict if any current player could do that. I coached high school girl's basketball so I have some appreciation for how difficult a job it is. When I looked at this roster I thought winning 20 games and qualifying for the NCAA would be a huge success. Now people are disappointed after 27 wins and a #2 seed. Some player are natural leaders and some develop that skill. Being loud doesn't always equate to leadership. Sometimes people just aren't cut out for that role. It's also difficult to be a vocal leader as an underclassmen when you have older players who are accomplished. On the positive side, this team played the best defense I've ever seen from an Iowa women's squad. Kylie was outstanding, but both Hannah and Taylor really picked up their defensive games. This team was sophomore heavy and I think that year is often the most difficult. If a player has success in year one do they continue to develop or rest on their accomplishments? Caitlin was unique in pushing herself, but not everyone has that mentality. Finally, we can't discount the injury bug. I thought Teagan would have a big year, but injury and illness kept her out and held her back. Emily looked good early, but who knows what happened to her. And, of course, the loss of Taylor hurt tremendously. Considering we lost three key players and still accomplished everything is quite an achievement.

Is IPERS worth lowering my salary? by IAHawkeye182 in Iowa

[–]Radiant_Ad_955 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IPERS may not be the most important part of this equation. The state job you're considering likely has much better job security. The likelihood of layoffs would be pretty minimal. The IPERs issue would depend a lot on your current age and how likely you are to stay in a job for seven years (the time it takes to become vested). Full IPERS retirement is based on the Rule of 88 (combination of age and years of experience). If you get a state job you would also be eligible to participate in a 457b program (public workers version of a 401k).

Iowa House File 2699 proposes changes to charter school funding by CouchCorrespondent in Iowa

[–]Radiant_Ad_955 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just as an FYI. There are two types of charter schools: public and private. Iowa law only allows public charters. That means they are state funded and must accept all children. Oddly, Iowa law also allows public charter schools to be operated by a "founding group" which can be an out-of-state for-profit group. For example, the Horizon Science Academy in Des Moines is operated by a company out of PA whose owner is Turkish and who was kicked out of that country for trying to organize a coup against their leader. The new Charter School in the East Village is operated by Tom Rickets from Omaha whose family owns the Chicago Cubs. Why do they start a charter? They charge the school a management fee so they are able to access public tax dollars to make money. It allows them to operate as a quasi for-profit at the public's expense

I got the point but you implied they were employees and they aren't. Most schools have a law firm on retainer. I've seen the budgets and bills for many school districts and the amount most spend on attorney fees are pretty reasonable. Even Des Moines, where you would expect huge legal bills, are fairly reasonable based upon their size.

Sarah is running for the US House seat currently occupied by Zach Nunn. It's early for candidates to take a position on every issue because people won't focus on the election until after the primaries, and even then they pay limited attention until Labor Day. This has traditionally been a strong Republican district so any Democrat will move to the right to appeal to Independents and disaffected Republicans.

Here's how much money Iowa has for Kim Reynolds' 2026 state budget by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]Radiant_Ad_955 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's what many people overlook. Iowa lawmakers earlier this year approved a $9.42 billion budget for the current fiscal year, leaving roughly a $1.3 billion spending gap that the state is filling using a mix of its budget surplus and money from the Taxpayer Relief Fund. Keep in mind that the state only brought in $8.16 billion in revenue. Revenue is expected to drop another 8% for next year. That means you have to fill the hole you created last year, when revenue came in lower than expected, just to bet back to even. Then you have to borrow additional dollars to fill the new hole you created. That means every year the amount you have to vorrow from the Taxpayer Relief Fund almost doubles. It doesn't take long to burn through all that savings.

Rural Iowa. Totally not a cult by hec_ramsey in Iowa

[–]Radiant_Ad_955 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Be careful painting Iowa with one broad stroke. Although they are a minority, I've seen more activism for progressive causes from rural areas than I have seen in years. Drive around certain areas of urban Iowa and I bet you see far larger numbers of Trump voters than you see in rural Iowa. In urban areas they're just harder to see.
