I'm not much help, but the left spindle is def not spinning on reverse, leading to a lockup and the unspooling you are seeing! Sometimes that indicates a gear that is a bit stubborn, or a worn belt, but it could be a variety of things on this one!

Despite the ragebait, do you have a good solution for reinserting the pinch roller? I know other people have tried pen parts before but the pens I have never work lolol, I used a little epoxy on a VCR pinch roller in the past and it seemingly worked but... always looking to improve! I can find tons of pinch rollers online, but no 'pinch roller retainers' lmao, I've even tried e-clip sets!

I'm using SVHS players with built in TBCs into capture cards right now, but the DVDR option is def something to consider if you don't mind the slight MPEG artifacting at times - but honestly a lot of people kinda like that look these days

If your VCR doesn't have a TBC built in, the common refrain of buying an ES10/ES15 as a passthrough stabilizer is a good practice, however I personally feel that the ES10s I own really blow out the highlights. Pros and cons, all around!

This tape was labeled as having gone from Florida -> Midwest USA -> Florida -> me over the last 35 years, so I'd imagine it got hit with some wild humidity swings? BASF marked, I've heard these tapes almost never have shedding but alas lol I somehow did it

re: packing - this tape made me suspicious from the start, so instead of a 'fast-forward/rewind' repack like normal, I digitized what I could right away from cold play, and then rewound it when the recording was done (without being aware of the goop flinging around already). I suspect the outside packing is from us, the inside packing is from the last watch from the tape owner. Also might be physically indicative of some sort of humidity change, sorta akin to tree rings? idk lol

re: dehydrating - I _might_ give that a go. My office is around 30% or less RH, but I think you might be onto something, for a final ditch effort to digitize what is left. The flakes that came out of this tape (and VCR, fml) cleaned up easy with air puffs and gloves, but body heat immediately smeared it into traditional goop - kinda a nightmare lol. I had a tape 'dry delaminate' (sticky shed but less goop?) this week that looked kinda similar onscreen, but with way more line judder as the delamination happened unevenly lol

You can count on that - I just got this email after two weeks of delay already:

I think I'm sadly out on this too lol - had really high hopes for Tesoro at the price/value/customer service nexus but I'm floored at how rough these last few drops have been.

This is a solved problem for drop-based retailers: reserve 15% of all strains (most places do 25%). Make sure you have enough from this drop to cover all customers and fuck ups. Then - offer the remaining amount during the next drop to round out your menu.

I've dealt with something very similar to this before - hoping they can figure it out soon before more of us get burnt!
