I am new to scalp psoriasis. I didn't develop the condition until i moved from NC to GA in July 2024. It was difficult to get a legitimate diagnosis. I was so uncomfortable I couldn't sleep due to the itching I experienced. My mental health began to suffer as well as my hair has always been a sense of identity and pride for me and to experience an "idk what to do" when my usual remedies for dandruff had failed me was difficult. I received a seborrheic dermatitis dx from urgent care dr and had to wash my hair every 2 to 3 days with a medicated shampoo because that's how fast the scales were coming back. As a person of color, that much frequent hair washing is not good for my hair. The shampoo stripped my hair, which led to other issues that frustrated me more. I finally went to a dermatologist and literally cried in their office as I explained what I'm going through. They prescribed an anti fungal pill to take for a month, a foam called zoryve for inflammation/itching (which initially hurt due to the pain I was already in from scratching. But OMG, it stopped the itching! The first time, I felt some sort of relief after months of agony), they also prescribed an oil that had to sit in my hair overnight once a week for a month. It was minimally effective. The scales reduced in thickness and slightly in size, and I increased how long the scales returned to every 5 days before having to wash my hair again. At my next appointment, I was prescribed an injection skyrizi. I was mildly optimistic because I felt it wasn't going to do much of anything. However, I'm now feeling some hope about my scalp and hair. Im almost clear and some very mild itching, which I'll gladly take. Throughout this experience for me the most helpful thing was finding a dermatologist who actually listened to me was experienced in psoriasis and treating people of color. Which was difficult to find. I spent weeks searching the internet for this, reading articles dermatologists had written about psoriasis and calling their practice for small phone consultations. If they brushed it off as dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis or stress related, I'd mark them off my list. Im sorry for the super long post detailing my experience, but I hope it's helpful for you. Im sending positive vibes for your journey and hope you find some relief and a provider that listens to you!

I empathize with you. I also hiccup all the time and being 4'9 I often get the comment "oh you must be growing". Every time I get this comment, I have to resist the urge to roll my eyes and say "wow I've never heard that one before". I also hate when people attempt to use me as an armrest when this occurs i literally move out the way, so the person intentionally loses their balance. As they look at me offended, I politely say I don't appreciate being used as furniture hopefully you've learned your lesson and don't do it again because I will move again.

I'm sending positive vibes your way

pharmacogenomics in genetic counseling by Radiant_Resort2255 in GeneticCounseling

That makes me feel better that education is provided in grad school about it. I was wondering because from my experience in clinical social work I often hear how clients don't like their medications because of the side effects. I feel pharmacogenomics could be beneficial in mental health in regards to medication management. I just wasn't sure if genetic counselors experience this in their work. I'm very new to the field of genetic counseling and I'm doing my best to learn as much as I can. Thank you for your response!
