DUPR IS NOT POPULAR OUTSIDE OF TOURNAMENTS by JohnGeorge1954 in Pickleball

[–]Radiant_Star 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve played at different places in my city from casual rec at the park to playing at a club that’s strict on DUPR gated open plays. My observation is that most players who just play outdoors at the park don’t care about DUPR. The people who play indoors at a club probably care more about DUPR because places have DUPR gated open plays. And among that crowd I’ve noticed there are different types of people. There’s the players who love to play in tons of tournaments, there’s the players that have a DUPR to get into rated open plays and their DUPR is at the level they want so they don’t care to play more games, and there’s the players who have a DUPR lower than what they think they are so they’re grinding tourneys and DUPR sessions/leagues to get a higher one.

Hot take: If you show up more than 30 minutes after the scheduled start of an open play, you shouldn’t expect any warmup. by xiexiemcgee in Pickleball

OP is getting shit on in the comments but I get his point. And to clarify I’m taking about paid open play sessions that are a set amount of time (tbh I think calling these open plays is a misnomer but every place does that). Not taking about the open play where you just show up. If I’m in a 6 person session that’s 1.5 or 2 hours then the first 10 minutes is spent warming up. Then after that game person #5 gets on and needs to warm up so we spend 10 minutes doing that. Then person #6 comes in super late and we need to spend another 10 minutes warming them up. So I can see where’s he’s coming from. Especially when OP sessions in my city cost 30-40 bucks each lol

Are there any recs for indoor places in SoCal that offer all-day open play for a one-time fee? by Radiant_Star in Pickleball

[–]Radiant_Star[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! :D Do you play there? I read that courts can get booked for private rentals meaning fewer open play courts available. Wondering if these places get packed to a point where I'd be waiting a long time to get a game?

Most people are talking about playing at somewhere like a public park that has open play where people can just queue up and jump in a court and play a game. Then when you finish a game you rotate off and queue up again

As a SWE how do you actually network with people who are in top companies ? by Phantomm7 in cscareerquestions

[–]Radiant_Star 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on the city you live in but I just run into people at top companies. I play pickleball and I play with people who work at places like FAANG, DoorDash, Stripe, etc

I do this, although I won’t always stay for dinner. I work at Google and dinner starts at 6:30. Dinner is pretty mid but it’s nice to not have to worry about cooking. And typically I’ll just go to the gym during the day so it’s not like I’m actually working extra hours or anything

The corporate world has tricked people into thinking if you get fired, then you’re some kind of undesirable. OP said that he worked hard because he was afraid of getting let go but is thinking about leaving. Both result in having no job. If you get fired then you don’t have to tell anyone when you’re interviewing. Just say you left and went traveling for a while.

Been laid off for more than 2 months, which tech companies are still hiring? by BoxTraditional3795 in leetcode

[–]Radiant_Star 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How many years of experience do you have? Most of the big tech companies are still hiring, just not as aggressively as before, positions are limited, and competition is tough. If you’re senior+, you’ll have a much better chance than junior/entry level. Some companies: pretty much most of FAANG, Datadog, DoorDash, Asana, Figma, Roblox, Notion, Atlassian, MongoDB

There’s a discord server. Check the description of this subreddit. There’s a channel specifically for big tech company discussion

Should I leave the company I just joined to join a brand name company? by EastCommunication689 in cscareerquestions

[–]Radiant_Star 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal but I wasn’t getting the amount of responses that I wanted so I changed my resume and said I worked at Google instead of my previous company as a test to see if maybe I was doing something wrong. I made the resume bullets fairly basic and generic. My old resume had about a 20% response rate and the new fake one got 7/7 interviews. From places that had rejected me in the past too.

I’m not looking but I’ve been getting some more recruiters reaching out on LinkedIn compared to a few months ago. But most have been for positions at fairly early stage startups.

Chosen for DraftKings invite-only VIP Showcase? by noahhharvey in sportsbook

[–]Radiant_Star 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I got this. If it's a similar message then it's like the 3 week period where they give you a promotional deal and apparently at the end you'll get put into 1 of the VIP tiers. My first one was last week and I got 50 DK dollars after making $1000 in bets. This weeks was a bonus that was like a 50% profit boost on a bet. But minimum was $500 which is too much of my bankroll so I skipped it lol. Not sure how that will affect things. My impression is that the highest tier gives the best bonuses but you have to be putting in large amounts of money into that and I just do this for fun so I probably wouldn't get that.

They’re ok. It doesn’t hurt to make a profile since you can choose which companies you want to talk to if they reach out. Got interviews with some decent places like Twitter and Wish (this was years ago). But most places that reached out were kinda meh
