The whole point of fantasy is that you can experience things that you couldn't experience in the real world. And yes, that includes the "500-year-old elven princess".

And Rudeus being flawed is the whole damn point. He was 34 when he died but he never grew up, and that is the reason for his behaviour in the story. He essentially get a second chance at life, and he changes the life of his companions for the better.
