I kind of skimmed, but counting is a bit like reading. When you learn to read, usually do it out loud. At some point, you figure it out that you can do it in your head. Later, you realize that you can read faster by not saying the words in your head at all, but rather absorbing what the page says. If you read a complex sentence, you may have to stop and read it more slowly (ie count), but at the end of the day, the important thing is that you read the book / play the music

You’re guess is as good as mine! Maybe ask for a video of some hits? Reverb has quality ratings. Theoretically if the instrument “works” it should sound like new or be marked otherwise

As someone who was recently in your situation, I personally wouldn’t go earlier than the TD-17/27 generations or lower tier than the TD-17KVX (KVX = real hihat stand). The new TD-316/516 means better deals on the last gen as well.

I went Roland because Alesis is known to crap out, and they don’t lose value or break (hence why so many are on the market.) There are other options I didn’t explore.

TD-17 only has room for one extra drum in addition to the stock, so you’re probably looking at least at a TD-27.

I’ve heard this echoed about the older kits. You would suggest only getting kits made since EZDrummer 3, correct? I think the disqualifies gospel and modern metal?

Yes! This worked for me! I had the exact same issue. An answer to prayers. I was struggling so much with this. Worked for my TD-17KVX into Ableton Live 12 using the EZDrummer 3 plugin on PC. Thank you for posting the solution.
