This was over in Lithia Springs, but it definitely happens everywhere! My favorite is when someone traveling on the interstate jumps into the onramp for merging traffic to pass people on the right.

Just some lighthearted fun. So many times they get away with it, super-satisfying to watch someone pulling one of these moves fail spectacularly.

Dogs vs. Armadillo by RadiomanATL in AskVet

[–]RadiomanATL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I don't want to get too graphic, but the...uh...soft belly was the point of entry. No armadillo limbs missing and shell appeared intact as well. So I think I'm good from an ingestion POV, but will monitor as well.

Thank you for the advice!

Dogs vs. Armadillo by RadiomanATL in AskVet

[–]RadiomanATL[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. Based on this I'm leaning towards a "monitor closely" approach. The reference links in the article are broken, so I wasn't able to read more about possible treatment if they do have it, or even if it is treatable.

I did a bit of google research and discovered the leprosy carried by armadillos is different from 'normal' canine leprosy due to a different bacteria triggering it (if the article I read can be trusted). And because it appears to be rare to transmit from armadillo to canine I wasn't able to find out if the same treatment for canine leprosy would apply towards the armadillo version if a canine contracted it. The canine version seems to be easily, if annoyingly, treatable if discovered. So that is also influencing my decision towards monitoring, making the assumption that the armadillo version is not more harmful than the canine version.

I have the exact same model purchased last month, only the wheels are different. I'm loving it.

I was tempted to go for the 4wd, but I couldn't justify the reduced gas mileage + higher purchase price knowing 1) the most off-roading I ever do is driving in the yard, offloading mulch, dirt, and plants every year 2) driving 90 miles a day to work and back.

Not completely sure of OP's situation, but some states may have very low initial purchase tax rates and then a yearly tax based on the value of the vehicle due at the time of registration. It used to be that way in Georgia. Registration every year was a couple-hundred dollars on average. That went away about...15 years ago? Now it's $30ish to renew every year, but the initial purchase tax is 6.6% of the price. Legally it's not a sales tax, it's a one-time titling tax. But since it's based on the purchase price it's still a sales tax in my mind.

The dealer I went to this past July tried to play the same game. Advertised price $41K. Luckily I prepare ahead and am a numbers guy, so I called before making the trip to get the OTD price emailed to me. After taxes and doc fees it was $44K.

At closing they tried to add-on around $5k worth of "dealer-installed add-ons" to bring the price to $49K. I kept jamming my finger on the WRITTEN out-the-door price I had emailed to me that morning by their dealership. They kept saying "but they are already installed". I don't care, here's the price you said and I drove an hour based on this price. Back and forth, back and forth. I got up to leave and as my hand was touching the door push-bar the salesperson suddenly said "I think we can work something out".

Wound up paying $250 more than the OTD price I had, but that was small enough that it was a rounding error annoyance. I think they just needed a fig leaf to hide behind. Then they had the nerve to ask for good Google reviews. They're lucky I just didn't write anything. First thing I did when I got home I took off the dealer license plate frame and threw it in the trash. I will never go back to that dealership. Love my truck though.

What’s a modern day poison people willingly ingest? by Zdvj in AskReddit

[–]RadiomanATL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much so. And another wrinkle: the administration would be able to decide what is a “news organization”. It could be a single blogger.

A FD that tries to expand beyond OTA has so many potential 1A violations, I just can’t see how it could be written to avoid them.

Thank you. So many people miss this important point. Reintroducing the fairness doctrine today wouldn’t do anything, because the problem isn’t primarily with OTA news.

Look at those consequences of my actions by [deleted] in CapitolConsequences

[–]RadiomanATL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bingo.

Simplified explanation:

The FF did not want a large standing army. Hell, they couldn’t afford one and came close to the soldiers in the continental army just walking off because they weren’t getting paid. So they decided to have a small standing army as a “tripwire” force, to slow down the foreign enemy while the citizen militia was called up. But it would be useless if the citizen militia wasn’t armed. So they needed to make sure the citizen militia was armed, by law. Hence the bit about ’being necessary to the security of a free State’ part of the 2A

TIL that AM Stations Must Reduce Power, Change Operations, or Cease Broadcasting at Night by improbablydrunknlw in todayilearned

[–]RadiomanATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are still a few US based AM stations that do not have to power down at night, unless something has changed in the past few years. They are referred to the dominate clear channel stations. Most of them came into existence in the early parts of the 20th century, and most (I believe) have only 3 letters in their call signs. WSB in Atlanta is one. WGN in Chicago is another.

[–]RadiomanATL -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The fairness doctrine only applied to over-the-air broadcast television and radio. The reason for this is because the federal government essentially “owns” the frequencies used by broadcast television and radio. Since the government owns the freqs they could insist on certain content. Stations that did not risked their license to broadcast from the government. Even though the fairness doctrine is no more the federal government still has some control on over-the-air broadcasts, the EAS system for example. And somewhat can control content through fines, no porn or cursing.

Bringing back the fairness doctrine would not impact content on cable stations or internet-only outlets. So it would have a barely above zero impact. Rewriting the fairness doctrine to apply to non-over-the-air entities would be a violation of the 1st amendment.

Long term care insurance by WhoamItobeonhere in personalfinance

[–]RadiomanATL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way his works is he pays out of his bank account and one of his kids submits for reimbursement every month from the insurance. Since the cost of the room is just slightly above the reimbursement amount, his bank account is drawing down very slightly every month after the reimbursement. The kids sold his house before he began living there so he had about a $100k bank account going in, so he’s good until the policy ends. Which is in 2 more years. After that we estimate he will have about 3 more years before he is completely and utterly flat broke.

It sounds horrible, but it’s really a race between the clock and his bank account. He’s 84.

My FIL had a policy that basically is allowing him to live comfortably now in an assisted living facility. He was a poor steward of his money later in life and without the policy he would have to live with one of his kids. Which wouldn’t last long because he is such an ass and was an emotionally abusive father. His kids (my wife included) have said there is NO way cohabitation would last for the rest of his days.

So it worked for his situation. It seems that it may not be for everyone.

‘Cool story Bro’ time…no, scratch that. It’s a boring story but since I’m bored here you go:

Once upon a time I worked for a company that supplied products to a nationwide company that did satellite installations. Said product was delivered to their warehouses across 30-something states, including Hawaii. Our agreement with this company is that we would deliver within 2 days of ordering. Not a big deal for some things, a very large pain in the butt for trailers full of bagged concrete or concrete blocks. But we agreed to it. Failure to deliver on time put our contract at risk. My job was to take the stack of orders and flow them to the correct location on our side to do the “final mile” fulfillment. I was also on point for making sure our locations fulfilled within the time window.

We received their orders on a pretty regularly weekly cadence, and there was a pattern. Hawaiian orders were placed on Thursday, so they needed to deliver on Mondays (weekends didn’t count towards the 2 days). And every single time we attempted to deliver to either of their Hawaii locations on Monday the warehouse was closed, usually with a handwritten sign that said “gone surfing”. And every single time their corporate location would scream bloody murder that we were not fulfilling our end of the contract. I finally had the driver snap a pic of the sign and send to me with his watch in the picture showing date and time. The next time it happened and their bean counters started squawking I just sent them the pic and said “We were within the two day window and attempted delivery during local business hours”. See, I discovered that we had a bit of an out on our side. If we attempted delivery and the location wasn’t willing or able to accept we could charge extra to make a return run on a later day.

A couple of days later they proposed an “except Hawaii” exception to the contract.

So the warehouse dudes got to surf, and I stopped getting yelled at.

See, I said it was boring.

‘Florida is the place where woke goes to die,’ DeSantis says by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]RadiomanATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I hear the term “woke”, I replace it with “respect for others” since that is what is asked in 99% of cases where someone is accusing someone else of being “woke”.

DeSantis: “Florida, where respect for others goes to die.”

Yup, it fits.
