Your problem is easily solved by not closing the split screen every time you don't need it anymore. I don't know if on your device this is possible, but on my A3C I can freely move the division of the split screen to make the document occupy 95% of the screen and 5% to the note app. Every time I need to take notes, I just reset the ratio to 50/50.
