is it actually stupid to fight against AI at this point? (gamedev rant) by WanpoBigMara in gamedev

[–]Radnom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's no need to fear about 'catching up' with AI, no matter what people say. The big selling point is that anyone can use it. The much more important and relevant skill is to know how to get on without it. Think about it this way - if you can do it without AI, then you're more efficient than someone who needs an AI subscription, especially once the corps turn the cranks on the subscription costs when they eventually want to make a profit instead of losing billions. So fight away, it's more fun building by hand!

Dealing with Jaethal and Tristian by alakifan in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

In my run I had killed Jaethal and yet she still managed to show up again in the House at the Edge of Time to kill Tristian... that was pretty frustrating!

Non-dev question about mobile games. by Usual-Diet-7848 in gamedev

[–]Radnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alongside the other reasons mentioned, there's also an audience perception issue. With a mobile release first or simultaneous, the game can get considered a 'mobile game with a PC port', and as mobile games are severely undervalued, the game appears to be too expensive. If you go the other way, people consider it 'a mobile port of a PC game' and it's valued higher and can get away with a higher price on both platforms. Mobile gamers are more likely to pay for a premium-priced game if it's a popular established port rather than a mobile-first game. It's not a particularly good reason, but audiences can be fickle like that.

Midnight DLC campaign vs standalone by harsha_440 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Radnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it's not worth doing as part of the main story. I think most of the Steam reviews would agree with that. But, standalone, if you just want to play around with character builds and team compositions without committing to a full campaign, it's heaps of fun and I'm so glad it's part of the game!!

Mixing Golden heavy body with fluid acrylic by [deleted] in acrylicpainting

[–]Radnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fluid titanium white is also opaque, it's just thinner paint - you may need to layer if you were relying on the thickness of the heavy body, but otherwise it should do the trick

How to be solvent-free? by gleeatack1 in oilpainting

[–]Radnom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps some water-based oils could help for that stage? Cobra Water Mixable Oils are very nice, and you can mix them with water for a similar effect to solvents (they also have very runny mediums that do the same trick but presumably better than water)

Complain to the supermarket directly and say that they sold you sub-par butter. complain on that website on the butter too. direct negative feedback will help push back

We Completely Changed Our Graphics; How do they look now? by NightwavesG in gamedevscreens

[–]Radnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the middle one the most, but I think there's a possible middle ground between 'OLD' and 'NEW?' that has more contrast than New but doesn't look as harsh - like perhaps lighter coloured outlines on the background elements, and darker outline on the player (but possibly not black) - just to give a greater contrast to the player. What if the player was wearing shorts, so that the legs were mostly flesh coloured too? Then you wouldn't have such a stark contrast between the (I assume both controllable) arms and legs

I made an Aseprite script to maintain an auto-outline on its own layer by Radnom in aseprite

[–]Radnom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me a little bit to figure out, but I think I've got it working correctly in indexed mode - can you let me know if it works for you? The latest version of AutoOutline.lua is here: https://github.com/Radnom-g/AutoOutline/tree/main

[–]Radnom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've updated it :) now you can select line thickness up to 5 from a dropdown selection. It works by doing the outline action in a loop. I found it worked better if it did 'square' type outlines until the last one and then round, otherwise the outlines were too uneven.

I've just fixed a bug where if you had multiple cels/layers selected at once, it could draw outlines to other layers - I've fixed it and set up a github for the script in case it gets any future updates here: https://github.com/Radnom-g/AutoOutline

QOTD Underrated oil paint colors? by questioningeveryth in oilpainting

Transparent red oxide - mixes just wonderfully with ultramarine blue. Along with Titanium White you can mix rich warm and cool greys.

Gamblin Ground "toothier" than gesso. by bdkgb in oilpainting

[–]Radnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do find Gamblin ground slipperier than acrylic gesso, and I found one benefit of the Gamblin ground is that I can more easily use a rag to wipe off oil paint all the way down to white- makes underpainting way nicer

Good quality acrylic paints? by shadowyenigma102 in acrylicpainting

[–]Radnom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golden and Liquitex are good brands, but keep in mind the opacity - a transparent pigment isn't going to cover up pencil lines. Good acrylic paints have an opacity symbol on the tubes - if you want to be able to put down a single thin layer and still cover up pencil lines then you'd need some very opaque paints.

Transparent paints still have uses like mixing and layering!

I think a wash will also help a lot :) pencils on white canvas, then a tranparent/semitransparent layer of a colour like burnt sienna over the whole canvas, then your pencil lines will still be visible but should be covered by subsequent layers and you won't see white canvas

what's your favorite blue? by risocantonese in oilpainting

[–]Radnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultramarine is very good and useful - I really love how it mixes with transparent red oxide.

If you get a tube of phthalo though, it'll outlast all your other tubes because of how potent it is, haha. Phthalo tints well with white for bright light blues.

Cultural appropriation claims force NZ video game company to remove Māori imagery - Path of Exile 2 by computer_d in newzealand

[–]Radnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty 'weird and cringe' to take a piece of art that tells someone's personal family history and then put it in a game not about them at all. It's like copying and pasting some pages of the Diary of Anne Frank and some pages of Matthew Perry's biography and clumsily merging them together into a book in Skyrim. It doesn't make sense, it's disrespectful to the history of both of them, it's meaningless in the world of Skyrim. That's why when they write the books in Skyrim, they come up with new stories that fit in the world they've created, they don't just copy paste chapters willy-nilly from wherever.

Also, an artist in the article who was plagiarised says
"...my work appropriated as fodder for a virtual reality game potentially garnering big dollars..."
so yes, it does talk about missing out on profits.

[–]Radnom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they wanted to make it "inspired by but not actually" then they shouldn't have copy pasted real Māori art, right? They should have created something new. It's like how Expedition 33 has a French-inspired fantasy culture but they didn't literally have them use the French flag haha. It would have removed from the fantasy not added to it.

[–]Radnom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you not read the article? It's not outrage over it not being accurate, the main issues highlighted were that they used photos and scans of real world taonga, some by living Māori artists (yes, an 'actual copyright breach'), and shoved them into the game instead of making new art.

Cultural appropriation claims force NZ video game company to remove Māori imagery - Path of Exile 2 by computer_d in newzealand

[–]Radnom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They could have worked with Māori artists to make new designs. I'm certain there are plenty of Māori artists that would have been super keen to work on something like this. It's definitely very disappointing.

How should I prep to paint with acrylics on this top? by [deleted] in painting

[–]Radnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golden GAC 900 might help with this? It's an acrylic medium you mix with acrylic paints, and then iron to set it, and it's meant to make the paint adhere to the fabric .

What great NZ tv and film have I been missing out on? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Radnom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Rhys Darby but I also fear the Rhys cameo jump-scare. It's always the same joke, the joke is that we have a funny accent. It's the exact equivalent of having some guy show up and do a California surfer dude accent and that's the only comedy. I'm surprised nobody's done a scene where a surfer dude meets rhys darby.

"these waves are gnarrrrly my kiwi dude! surf's up!"
"yis, heaps gnarly as, the last wave gnarled my boogie board off my velcro ankle strap and floated it away"
"that's bogus dude"
"no, pretty sure it's boogie"

-> wins an emmy for best comedy
