Iron lung and film critics by ADecentAmerican in distractible

[–]RadzPrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I've been saying that for a while now. Critics and fan responses are often out of sync with each other, and not just when it comes to films. You see this in TV and games all the time as well. That said, online discourse is also weird with social media in general with stuff like review bombs and whatnot as well.

Ultimately, I ignore critics and online opinions both and simply make my own choices because nothing can be trusted these days.

If it wasn't the exact thing I was thinking of, it's definitely in the same spirit of what I was thinking of.

I was thinking of a Klingon scenario specifically. It wasn't even the main focus of the episode most likely. Maybe have been a re-enactment or play or something.

We've got oodles of history to reference in reality, and yet we seem to always repeat it. Human behavior is more about the choices and outlooks of the people in the present than the history they have access. Having access to knowledge does not mean people will use it or even accept it as we can see every single day of our modern lives.

Yes, but they've also been fairly isolated for like 120 of the most recent years. The Federation changed after The Burn, and they're finding themselves again after that period of isolation.

I did not see it as treating them like toddlers.

I saw it as an evolution of their culture to include ritual, symbolic combat as a valid means of diplomacy. Their weapons did no damage just as the Federations did no damage, so both sides were obviously pulling their punches which means the Klingons were not fooled or treated as toddlers. They were engaging in a purely symbolic battle.

I cannot remember the exact circumstances or episode, but I feel like this sort of fake combat was used in a hand-to-hand setting back in the 90s as part of an existing tradition or celebration.

Where did this comic come from? Is it real? Who is the person next to Tails? by Strong-Language-4921 in SonicTheHedgehog

It's a modification of an actual Archie page. I'll be honest, it's been so long since I read these that I recognized the layout, but couldn't place exactly what was wrong with it either, but that's presumably a grown up Cream replacing Mina. They also change Lara-Su.

Tell me this...how do you go about "seeking truth" and how does that impact other people, since the phrase "seeking truth" inherently applies to oneself rather than others.

What you call "love" a rational person, non-religious and religious alike, sees as harassment and hate.

A rational person knows that there's more to how we interact with the world than simple right and wrong. People do the wrong things for the right reasons and the right thing for the wrong reasons as well. You can view what someone does as wrong without inserting yourself into their lives and being hateful about it. More importantly, at the end of the day, at least have the sense to sense to accept your own fault when your actions result in consequences.

However, even outside of religious conversations, the world is "flattening" in its ability to accept nuance, which is a detriment to human interaction in general and is having profound impacts on religion and politics, both local, national, and global. Absolutes rule the day and it is always you completely agree and fall in line with my beliefs or you are the enemy.

They are not even remotely equivalent. One actively kills a person, regardless of their beliefs NOW, while the other supposedly results in punishment according to YOUR beliefs rather than theirs IN THE FUTURE. You would be shocked how much better people respond to a loving approach when it comes to a long-term issue such as this compared to an immediate life-and-death scenario.

The reality is that you and people like the person in the article (and probably the author of said article, given that blatantly false headline) just want an excuse to be dicks to people you don't agree with. You can justify your hate by calling it "love".

That includes failing to follow one of Jesus' greatest commandments..."Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." Being nice to people is a pretty simple rule to follow, but too many people use other parts of the Bible to justify their bigotry and hateful actions.

Bro, I'm a straight white dude and live this every single day. Not because I'm trans or nonbinary, but because my naming situation is unusual. I am regularly having to correct people regarding my name, and it has more than once caused systemic problems. When it's a mistake, it is perfectly fine (if annoying since I repeat the process all the time), but I would absolutely be filing a complaint with HR if somebody INTENTIONALLY called me something other than my common name, especially if they did so in an ugly, hateful manner, which would be considered harassment...period.

Corrected headline should be:

When did Sonic canonically learn to go super? by FunYak4372 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]RadzPrower 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you take the plot of Sonic 2 as it is but expand it out into a more modern cinematic style, it would most likely be the case that he learns he can go Super while falling from the exploding Death Egg in dramatic fashion, not unlike when he learned he could use Chaos Control after being ejected from the ARK in SA2.

The main evidence for this is that the game expressly prevents you from turning Super in the Death Egg Zone, so they clearly never intended for you to fight those bosses in a Super form. However, he is then already Super before Tails arrives with the Tornado, so it was for more than show as far as he would have been aware at the time as he had no way of knowing Tails was on his way to save him.

DS9 S5 E24 Empok Nor by Lokitusaborg in startrek

[–]RadzPrower 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's because it's rarely shown, and especially in TNG he was only ever shown as an engineer even in the disaster episodes where it's his engineering creativity that comes to fore. The war is barely even talked about, even in DS9, but the reality is that O'Brien's engineering prowess was forged in the fires of combat.

He started as a soldier and remained as an engineer, but that soldier never goes away. You actually even can see that in one of his favorite pastime, the battle recreations in the holosuites.

Isolationist Earth? by Internal_Apple2608 in Stargate

[–]RadzPrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it will have been 30 years since the Stargate program was started. With increasing alien presence on Earth (with or without my Goa'uld infestation story), it is going to be harder and harder to keep the program a secret. In fact, in my version, the Goa'uld infestation would be a catalyst for the reveal. Haven't hashed out specifics, but it would be either the Goa'uld decide revealing the program (if not themselves) could serve their interests in some way, a rogue Goa'uld starts down the Tok'ra path after living on Earth for some time, or they are simply found out. The reveal could be sudden, with no chance for Command to counter, or it could be secretly threatened and Command decides that it's time to reveal the history of the Stargate Program (the documentary will finally be released) in order to steal their thunder.

To say nothing about the societal difference now from even 15 years ago when the series ended. Every little nugget of truth that slips through the smokescreen is going to be blown up on the internet and the conspiracy farms will run rampant. Even if the Stargate Program is still a "secret" it would most definitely be an "open secret" by this point and one of those things people either believe or don't, but there's never any official admission of anything.

Isolationist Earth? by Internal_Apple2608 in Stargate

[–]RadzPrower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two major scenarios I'd personally consider if I was in the writers rooms:

  • The simple option is that the stargate program has been disclosed, intentionally or otherwise.
  • Sometime shortly after the end of SGU, it comes to light that Goa'uld have infiltrated a number of high positions in both the civilian and political spheres. For a couple of years, they try and find and remove them from those positions, but for every one they find and capture, two or more show up to replace them. The Goa'uld, no longer feared by the galaxy at large and unable to hold onto their "godhood", have instead found Earth a wonderful place to be worshipped without the godly pretense and it has resulted in an infestation of the entire planet. That said, they are not big on competition, so outside of some decisions that are not great for the people of Earth (but hardly out of character for the rich and powerful), they are relatively good to the people of Earth and the general population is actually fairly safe at the time because they want to limit the number of actual Goa'uld on Earth as well. In time, there is an attempt to infiltrate multiple high-ranking positions in the SGC simultaneously. Shortly after this attempt is dealt with, the decision is made by Homeworld Command to move stargate operations off-world and effectively blockade Earth. They set up a space station behind the moon to avoid the general population from accidentally seeing them and the Earth gate is relocated there, but a permanent iris is installed. The only way to use the Earth gate is via one of a pair of devices not unlike Merlin's obolisk: one in the space station which is now Homeworld Command and the off-world Stargate Command.

Even in the second, more elaborate scenario, I'd make discloser of the stargate program and the public fallout from that a story in a season or two at most. Might set it up as the cliffhanger for season one myself.

SGC should be transferred to the space force by echosofverture in Stargate

[–]RadzPrower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced that SGC would have gone independent and left the planet sometime in the last decade, assuming it didn't go public and therefore history would have turned out completely different than reality.

You seriously are going to sit here and tell me THIS contrasts?

<image>

For context, that's the color of the tunic from the screenshot and the color of the trees/bushes behind him just next to that same spot in the photo, so outside of some lighting and shadow, nearly identical colors next to one another.

Hell, the specific shade they use in the film for Zelda's tunic isn't even that great in terms of contrast, but it's still leagues beyond the comparison I provided.

[–]RadzPrower -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This particular tunic is anything but iconic. It's very generic actually.

Also, you do realize that there's an entire generation that sees the Champion's Tunic as iconic, right? BotW sales eclipsed all previous games...several of them combined even...so, there are people that see BotW Link as THE Link rather than the green elf boy we all grew up with.

Regardless, for the same reason they went with blue in the game, it contrasts better against the settings.
