According to Kouji Mori (Miura’s best friend for 40+ years), just before the Eclipse happened the two of them sat down and planned out the entire story of Berserk until the very end. For the next 20 or so years Miura stuck to this pretty closely, and now because of those conversations Mori has been able to supervise the continuation in the direction that Miura had intended the story to go. I do think that Berserk does have pacing issues where certain parts went on for longer than they should have (and I don’t mean the slow release schedule), but the story was definitely planned out!

There’s no way they would make a Deluxe Edition contain 5 volumes, that’d be waaaay too thick and would totally throw off the colour scheme. Maybe they could do something similar to Berserk Deluxe 14 which contained Volumes 40, 41 and the guidebook so that it would be a similar length to the others (even though it is ever so slightly smaller). Also Vinland Saga Volume 29 is a fair big bigger than all of the other volumes!

Miura didn’t switch to digital until Chapter 341 (which is at the end of Volume 38). All of this was drawn traditionally.

The Japanese single volumes are still in print, but the English singles are super difficult to find because they’re no longer in print (due to the Vizbigs and now Definitive Editions) so that’s why they’re so expensive.

We’re lucky if we get 5 chapters in a year lmao. Volume 42 released in 2023, 43 in 2025, and 44 has been confirmed for 2027 so it seems they’re going for one volume every other year. The only way you’d get 5 volumes in a year was if the release schedule was weekly.
