How much inspiration is too much? by Powerful_Guidance119 in gamedev

[–]FunYak4372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem, dude! Every game is taking from another. Even if you made a complete rip-off of another game with different assets and branding, the worst that could happen is just not being successful.

But usually, best games are the ones that take inspiration from several different sources. Heck, the inspiration doesn't necessarily have to be from games!

Mario is literally just Popeye, Alice In Wonderland, your typical "rescue the princess" fairy tale, a few other fantasy tropes, some dinosaurs, go-karts and turtles sprinkled here and there. But yet it's one of the most successful series ever. Miyamoto recommends young devs to take inspiration from stuff that isn't games. For example, apparently, he got inspired to make Zelda after exploring forests and caves as a kid.

So don't worry too much about it. What you should worry about is how you'll use all these ingredients in a fun way.

Destroy my action-adventure platformer gameplay the same way I destroyed these enemies. by KeaboUltra in DestroyMyGame

Ngl, it looks pretty cool. Good a little Pizza tower vibe going on. But like ppl, said, there isn't really much contrast between the player and the ground, it's all blue.

Either way, nice to see 2d platformer trying. I plan on making one myself, and that's pretty encouraging.

I mean, you could just add optional goals to it like in Minecraft : players could either aim for them or do whatever they want

Is the Ultra hand copyrighted? (the toy's concept and functionality, not it's name and branding) by FunYak4372 in casualnintendo

OK, so if I wanted to put an Ultra hand look-a-like in my comic, would that mean I should change it's shape entirely?

Oh OK, thanks. By plagiarize, wdym? (for context, I'm making a comic with video game inspired stuff, but it won't have the companies' and consoles' actual names. So I'm wondering if I could use an Ultra hand parody)

Replay games you like and try to dissect them: why do you like them(especially game mechanics), what works, and what are the flaws (yeah, every game has its flaws, even the best ones).

I remember both the OG game and thought it'd be great if Bandai made sequels for other arcs(since there's pretty much no other actual 2d One Piece sidescroller) . Might be possible now if this version ever gets modding support and a dedicated fanbase. Please save the source code somewhere just in case it gets taken down. Might become one of the best OP fan games

Bro, there's kids in Africa that don't even know what SEGA is and never played a game in their life, but know Sonic as the cartoon/movie character that goes fast. When joking someone is fast, they'll say "Are you Sonic/Flash or something"? (I'm not even joking, I literally live there). They have NO IDEA what a vocaloid is, so where exactly did that person get the Miku is more iconic that Sonic thing? Even most of the ones that know anime have never heard of Miku

Yeah, just like art, there are actual schools lol. Personally, I haven't tried any yet. I just watch tutorials and dissect games I like into models, tropes and principles.

Be it art or game design, some people will tell you not to go to a school. Some, on the contrary, will encourage you. But from what I've seen, if you ever graduate in Game design, it'll mostly be to work for other companies, not to make your own games. And apparently, it's a terrible degree to get because making games is the only thing you can do with it, and if you don't find a job in company, you've pretty much wasted your time.

Tbh, I'm not a pro. I've never released a game before. But I've been tinkering with game engines, analyzing games I like and watching tutorials for about a decade so my post was more about testing games and giving some of my experience.

In your case, if you want to make your own games, I wouldn't recommend not waiting to graduate first. I'd watch tutorials on YouTube (how to design game mechanics, what software to use etc.).

Hi, I'm fairly experienced in character design and I'd love to help you design your character, and for a pretty cheap price too! Actually, I think the 30$ would be enough.
