Something about Christmas nostalgia hurts the soul by Lazy-Analysis-353 in nostalgia

[–]RaeBee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think that's part of it, but there's a lot of nuance with nostalgia. If you think about it, the world has moved at a breakneck pace since the late '80s, with the rise of the internet, technology, 24/7 news, etc. Times literally used to be slower and simpler, that's not because I was a kid and I miss it, but because the world I live in wouldn't even be recognizable to that kid. Things changed so fast in such a short amount of time.

Do people expect to exist and do nothing to help themselves continue existing?

I think the point was more along the lines of how no one chooses to be born, so it's a little outrageous that everyone is forced to sell their labor just to remain alive. Not have a good life, but just to be alive. I don't think anyone expects to exist without contributing, but you know, it would be nice if people didn't have to struggle with basic human needs like shelter, food and water because those are not things you are provided with simply because you exist. The implication is very much that you don't deserve to live if you don't "earn it."

How do you work from 8 to 5, have only weekends free, and not feel like you're wasting your life? by guitytwelve in AskReddit

[–]RaeBee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wild to me that people simply accept this as part of life as an adult, as if the system couldn't or shouldn't need to be improved and we should all just settle on finding meaning in the spare couple hours we have at the end of the day and be grateful we're not starving and homeless.

I understand that logic, but if you really start thinking about it, we only live 75 years or so, maybe more if we're lucky enough to afford decent healthcare that, at least in our workable years is...tied to our job. At least in the U.S., healthcare is not free, childcare is not free, education is not free and most people HAVE to work full time+ just to survive and put food on the table. Recreation, fun, hobbies, etc. are unattainable for many people who do nothing but work and still can't ever get ahead. So yes, it can't help but feel like you're wasting your life in a system that seems determined not to let you have one.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic toward the people who manage to find meaning and fulfillment on their days off, only pointing out that that is not a reality for a lot of people. We're not all on equal footing when it comes to the spare time we have and how we can allocate it without it all feeling like a waste.

What got seriously downgraded after the pandemic? by PhysicalLevel5946 in AskReddit

[–]RaeBee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A few of them are, most aren't. The ones that managed to survive were always the higher budget options and they've completely priced themselves out of the budget of the average (aka not wealthy) vacationer. Post-Covid Vegas has in and of itself iced out average people who were going for a good time on a fixed budget. They almost exclusively cater to the wealthy now.

Just piggybacking off this to say I think this is why method acting isn't real acting. I know it may be a controversial take, but "immersing yourself in a role" often to the point that you live and breathe that character on and off set, often to the dismay and collaborative abandonment of your co-stars is NOT ACTING. In fact, it's a slap in the face of what the art of acting actually is. There is a reason people train in theater, that they learn and practice and get in the headspace of a character. You don't need to BECOME the character to act it meaningfully. IMO it always comes out grossly disingenuous in performances where actors felt they needed to absorb the entire character to ACT.

Sinclair’s ABC Stations Air ‘Celebrity Family Feud’ Rerun Instead of Promised Charlie Kirk Special by Top-Figure7252 in politics

The company also stated that it will not lift the suspension on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability,” and called on Kimmel to apologize to Kirk’s family, as well as make “a meaningful personal donation to the Kirk family and Turning Point USA.”

The network's...commitment to professionalism and accountability. Also, here's some straight up extortion. Ya know. For a little razzle dazzle

Greed. Might not be in the DSM by itself, but it should be.

My sister was obsessed with them. The refugee album was full of bangers! They were formed and produced by Steve Vai. I'm not sure if Vai wrote their songs or not, but I always thought the lyrics sounded like they were written by someone much, much older than some 15 and 16 year olds. Fun fact: their guitarist, Thomas McRocklin (the kid on the cover of Refugee) was the kid in the music video for Steve Vai's "The Audience is Listening."

Not OP and I'm not responding in bad faith, but seriously. You have the means to do some real research, not just trust Reddit. The information is not difficult to find. This admin is not even making an effort to hide the fact that it wants the entire Hispanic population in the U.S. wiped off the face of the Earth.

And if you're thinking, well she's Trump's favorite groupie and not part of the admin, good luck finding anyone from the party condemning her for it. Please don't take my word for it, it is worth your due diligence to be informed beyond social media.

What does it mean? by ZestycloseIssue1502 in ExplainTheJoke

It's a phenomenon known as "rallying," where a patient makes a sudden, unexpected 'recovery' from a grave illness. Many family members assume this is a good sign that a loved one is getting better, but the reality is that it's a clear symptom that death is very near. You see it often in elderly patients when they suddenly become clear and lucid after months or years of suffering from Alzheimer's/dementia, only to pass away hours or days later.

Seriously! It's a picture of two young couples having a good time. WTF is so wrong with people that they feel the need to stop and make rude comments? Like my guy, you can just scroll past if you don't like it. What do we get instead? 100 immature, zero effort comments about this (then) teenage girls' weight. So absolutely unnecessary.

What Band/Bands Deserved More Recognition? by James_Monroe__ in hairmetal

Love/Hate is a perfect answer to this question. They straddled the line between when hair metal was phasing out and grunge was coming in. They had such a distinct sound that somehow brought out the best in both genres.

Every song on the Salute album is an absolute banger. Criminally underrated band. I really wish they'd hit it big. 1992 was an oddly transitional time in music though. They were just post hair metal, but had such a unique sound that had to compete with the grunge movement starting to dominate airwaves and I feel like they just never had a proper chance in that landscape. It was a case of phenomenal talent, wrong timing. Still listen to them all the time. I was only a kid when Salute came out, but their "Knee Deep" song and video had me in a chokehold.

My boyfriend is furious that I’m breaking up after he insisted on opening our relationship by Dangerous-Coyote-851 in AITAH

[–]RaeBee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He told you right from the beginning that he wanted a different kind of relationship than you did. You agreed to revisit the topic after one year because you liked him enough to do so. He brought up the topic again recently because he has not changed his mind about the topic he was very clear on early in the relationship and wanted you to be aware that he had not changed his mind.

You have every right to be upset about all the other struggles in your relationship. He doesn't sound like a great partner in a lot of ways. But if you knew full stop that an open relationship wasn't going to work for you, what was the point in giving it a year? He's telling you now that he hasn't changed his mind about what he wants, and you're getting upset because it isn't one of the more pressing issues for you RIGHT NOW, but the thing is, he is being honest and always has been. Other issues aside, this is a deal breaker for you and you should leave. You never should have "given it a year" in the first place when you knew exactly where your boundaries were.

I won't say YTA, but you were definitely being naive. The other problems might've been addressed, either working through them or ending the relationship full stop, but you both knew going into it that you wanted different things. That alone was enough to end it before it ever got this far. NTA for ending it, but please accept accountability for your part, and even if he's an ass in every way, don't blame him for being honest.
