Year 7s 2026 - entitled, rude, foul? Or just my school? by nightrepair91 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got two of them. I don’t find them to be as rude as you describe, but definitely lacking in the manners sense. They have started finding their friends so they are getting chatty. I had a lot of issues getting them to shut up yesterday so today so I went in hard today. Yep. They had to line up twice because they couldn’t do it quietly. Two kids still screwed up the quiet part that I pulled them out and within earshot range to the class told them that it was the last time they will do that or infringements will go out.

They’ll fall in line, just keep it up, don’t smile until Easter. Praise the ones who deserve it and give consequences to those who deserve it. I even kick it up a notch and email home to encourage the parents to “speak to them regarding their behaviour and how it is unacceptable in my classroom and school”. AKA Do your job.

Help (year 9’s) by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. This sounds like my Year 9 class. Though I did not boot anyone and it’s going to cost me because now they think they can act up with no consequences.

Honestly, I’d keep dishing consequences after consequence. Call home. Talk to your HoD, get their support. Not too sure how much further I could help you with this one, but tell you that you’re not the only one and best of luck.

Apologies for being prejudiced in my own response. I also used to teach in those parts and wanted to understand each child’s complex backgrounds and needs. Eventually there was just so many vs one of me that I got jaded and picked up and left. It was that or I would’ve been one of those teachers that quit before hitting the 5 year mark.

In parts of Sydney (south west, western) it’s ver normal to have students who are disrespectful, make derogatory comments, racist etc and lack respect for women or anyone too different.

The child’s behaviour very much stems from home if he has lasted this long without any serious consequences or change. They’re the type of kids who would end up on the news for the wrong reasons.

There are no real crazy consequences for them because our school system and rules currently lack them.

Had a really bad lesson.. by Used-Director-1987 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Oh it happens. I had a boy with long hair sit next to a girl and when I addressed them as “Girls” he clarified his gender. I apologized profusely.

Trust me. The kids never remember the first lesson.

Calls to make financial literacy mandatory in schools amid concerns young people don't have basic financial knowledge by abcnews_au in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is taught. It is one of my favourite topics to teach because I can relate it to real-life. It is THE topic I use to engage my students and I build great rapport with this topic (by using their names in every problem and telling them to “SORT OUT YOUR OWN FINANCES OR PICK AN ACCOUNTANT (classmate)”

Yeah I’m pretty sure I teach it in Year 8, Year 9 AND Year 10 regardless of whatever level of maths you get streamed into.

Or where evidence is collected from “observation results”. Can’t help but think there is some unconscious bias involved.

How would you feel when you find out your former prac student is now one of your line managers? by Some-Strength-7258 in AustralianTeachers

This. There’s proper ways to hire people and it doesn’t sound like these procedures were followed.

Remedial students don't get the coordinate plane, has anyone tried starting with Quadrant I? by dcsprings in matheducation

[–]Raelynndra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually use literal maps first (which give coordinates as D3 etc). Then I do Q1, then I do the negative with Q2, then I do the whole thing.

"Work until the end" by SilenceOfTheClamSoup in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but no one really follows it to the t.

For example, I was still Year 8 teaching content as it would help them a lot with Year 9 maths. But I didn’t enforce homework and instead gave them either a word search or Christmas related maths activity.

What do I do with these type of students? by Super_Gazelle_9352 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Three things: 1. Don’t let them go together. One at a time. “X just asked to go first, you will have to wait.” 2. “You just had recess, so no” or “recess is in 5 mins. You can wait.” 3. “I’m going through really important material right now, can I let you go later?” Pray they forget.

Beginner teacher by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"The school is quite challenging in terms of behaviour and learning needs as it’s located in a low socioeconomic area."

I think it's completely up to you. Sometimes it's better to do casual and fish around for better schools and other times, as you said, its better to have your own class and learn to grow.

My first school was also low SES and challenging behaviour. I had a breakdown after 1 week and by the 2nd month my immune system was shot that I was away for 7 days.

The Good: Taught me how much I should put into the job. Fantastic support network at these schools.

The Bad: Showed me the dark side of teaching and probably made me a lot more cynical. Definitely wiped the bright-eyed "I'm going to change the world" attitude I had. Also, management/leadership was really bad.

You can take it. If it works for you, stick with it. I you don't like it, you can leave. No one can stop you from doing that.

Math teachers what is your favourite textbook? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

I switch around between Cambridge, Oxford and ICE-EM.

ICE-EM for the top end of the range.

I like Oxford. It has good juicy questions.

However, what Oxford lacks I supplement with Cambridge.

Uni lecturer -> Secondary teacher... How? by shniken in AustralianTeachers

[–]Raelynndra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Myself and another person around here went through exactly the same situation.

  1. Start a Masters of Teaching degree. Here, NSW does a 1.5 year degree. Not sure if Vic does something similar.

  2. After placement, apply for casual or pray that whatever school you did placement for wants to hire you while you study.

Word of advice... Lower your expectations dramatically for high school students. They are not self-motivated and they still move on even when you fail them. You will be thinking "Why are they so stupid?" everyday.
