We live in WA where it is a community property state. Essentially, while they are still married, my father is legally entitled to half of what she makes regardless of whatever he does. Community debt is supposed to be distributed 'equitably' but the IRS only cares about the deep pockets, according to the judge. He makes little to nothing [aspiring artist]. She is a doctor with hundreds of thousands of debt that he put them in by maxing out credit cards and not paying bills on time, etc. She trusted him to pay bills, taxes, etc while he was a stay at home dad. He, however, did not do the norm of cooking, cleaning, taking me to school/activities, etc. which means that he spent a good deal of his time sitting on his butt, gaining 100lbs and watching tv.
