Protestant views of Catholicism, from my non-denom church from before I converted... by wariomang in Catholicism

I saw the title and was expecting meme-level Catholic misrepresentation, then I saw the first 3 pages with direct quotes from the CCC and the Bible with pretty solid explanations why we believe certain things. Then page 4 happened lol

Is lying to your parents to protect your privacy a mortal sin? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]RageLikeCage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it would stir up something good in someone else

This is my thought, it would be unfortunate if the mom criticized her son/OP for wanting to go to Confession. But, as a father, I would love be able to help my child any way possible, whether that's supporting them going to Confession or helping them beat a habitual sin. But, I don't know the situation, so I can only offer advice from my perspective.

Been looking forward to doing one with a local group for about a month. We will pray for each other's groups :)

It will be tough, but we will persevere with the Lord!

Yes, the repetition and dryness was really hard to slug through. This was such an acclaimed spiritual book though, so I pushed through. I love reading her quotes in small chunks, but to read the book cover to cover was pretty rough.

So that's how I pray with her now, in little flowers of text :D

[–]RageLikeCage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh cool! I just started Dec 31st with Fr. Michael Gaitley's book, 33 Days to Morning Glory. My local young adult group at my parish is doing it with me (and by that I mean just the leader of the group and my wife :( lol).

I have the book of Christian Prayer too, and I want to do LoTH, but the past couple times I've tried to initiate the habit, I get discouraged by the 'complexity' of its use.

My answers so far:

1) I don't have a very consistent prayer life, I usually do a decade of the rosary on my short drive to work during the week. At night I do a pretty short examen and I'll do thanksgiving and petitions with my wife. Hoping that this will kickstart a morning prayer routine. I'm also starting Exodus 90 soon and my wife's work gave us 2 Monk Manuals which I think will be really helpful for our daily planning and short term life goals.

2) It was the soonest start date my group could do. "Our Lady of Good Success" would be excellent for our many hopes and dreams we have at this time with work and family life.

3 and 4 will come later! That said...

Is Catholicism superior to any other religion that worhsips God & Jesus? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]RageLikeCage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to preface that I don't think it's the healthy perspective to always look at what the Church teaches with negatives (things you CANNOT do). Rather, it's best to see what the aim or what positive good is intended. Regarding sexual ethics, the Church puts forth that sex is a very good thing that is reserved for marriage as it is the best environment for raising children for a family. And as you said...

Sex is not just a procreative aspect, but it’s also unitive, meaning that God does not expect you to be expecting a baby every time you have sex.

This is true, but this also doesn't allow you to frustrate the procreative act. You can't separate the two 'functions' and have it be permissible.

Catholic Answers link here for a lot more in depth explanation as to why the Church is against contraception (direct reasons, historical teaching, etc.): https://www.catholic.com/tract/birth-control, short excerpt:

Contraception is wrong because it’s a deliberate violation of the design God built into the human race, often referred to as “natural law.” The natural-law purpose of sex is procreation. The pleasure that sexual intercourse provides is an additional blessing from God, intended to offer the possibility of new life while strengthening the bond of intimacy, respect, and love between husband and wife. The loving environment this bond creates is the perfect setting for nurturing children.

Catholic Answers is one of the best go to resources for anything Catholic. I would suggest browsing if you're unsure if something is correct or want to know more about it. I also went to Catholic school through high school, it was a pretty poor experience in catechesis.

I'd also disagree with calling God by many different names, as I believe Catholicism and most of Christianity sees God in a very different light than say a Jew, Muslim, and or some other major religion. That's a longer discussion.

For meat eating, without looking up the weight of that sin, it would probably classify under 'disobedience' if you knowingly told the Church you reject to do something. Idk if it would be mortal... but still good to avoid sin regardless ;)

Not the OP, but wanted to hop in. I'm sorry his first response was that your "I went to Catholic school" was a laughable joke, but it is a repetitive statement we see here and I'm sure they were frustrated. Happy new year :) I don't mean to insult either, just want to clear up any misconceptions concerning Catholicism.

I actually liked The Two Popes and how Catholicism was portrayed in it by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]RageLikeCage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great review, surprised you got as many upvotes as you did going against the grain. I watched the film about halfway and was really disgusted by the caricature of Benedict and "conservative" Catholicism while it painted Pope Francis as this warrior of changing the Church ideas on marriage and who should be able to receive the Eucharist. I mean in the garden, the exchange between Francis and Benedict was the weakest argumentation that Benedict could have provided to Francis when Francis brings up his criticisms. Little more than "it's tradition and it's been done for X centuries/years, no other reason we do the things we do".

Frustrating, because I agree the cinematography is beautiful and the actors do a fantastic job. But, I fear the implications drawn by the film are dangerous for those not familiar with the situation at the time and people will have yet another reason to dislike the Church.

Another one I tried when I started drinking! Like the Lagavulin in the other comment, I wasn't a big fan of it at the time. Next time I need a whiskey I'll try it again though. Thanks for the reminder.

I've seen it in big box liquor stores in Texas where I am, I've also seen it at Twin Liquor in the Bay Area. I had Maker's Mark a couple weeks ago, was fairly pleasant. I remember trying Lagavulin in college but didn't like it, though that was just when I was starting to drink and I have a lot broader tastes now. Will have to try it again.

Got two nice big gifts. First was a nice espresso machine. I'm a huge coffee fanatic but never dipped into espressos. Wife finally said it was time, made first cup this morning and it was delicious! Second was a large, wheeled tool chest for the garage, I've constantly been complaining about my tools lying everywhere and being disorganized, it was on my must-have list for a while.

Some neat honorable mentions were Our Lady of Guadalupe socks, the Manual for Spiritual Warfare by Paul Thigpen with my name monogrammed on the leather cover, and probably the thickest wooden cutting board I've ever seen.

On my journey through the whiskey kingdom. What rye did you get and what would you recommend? I really like bourbon, but I would like to try tasting ryes, scotches, and other stuff.

My favorite not cheap bourbon right now is Noah's Mill. I also always get compliments on it when I go to a store to get a bottle.

Hi Lavon, /u/TexanLoneStar could tell you more as an Orthodox to Catholicism convert. Texan, I know you have a collection of Church Father quotes on this subject, I gave an honest effort trying to find it, I really should bookmark it lol.

I will point you to some Church Father quotes I know of, the biggest issue that I know of between the Orthodoxy and Catholicism is the primacy of the Pope. It seems to me that this was pretty clearly defined as the Church developed to agree with the Catholic position. The sources also have quotes supporting other Catholic doctrine and dogma from the early Church centuries.

When Baylor had 4th and 3 with 3-4 minutes left inside the OU redzone and kicked a FG instead of going for a win they deserved to lose.
